Arts and Crafts Arts and crafts abound in the capital city. Of the 48 different kinds manufactured for the tourist market, some of the most popular are: jade ware, ivory carving, cloisonné, lacquer ware, filigree work, silk flowers, drawn work, rugs, theater props, embroidery, gauze lanterns, glassware, clay sculptures, and dough figurines. Below are descriptions of seven of the major craft forms in Beijing. Jade ware The art of jade carving and polishing was already well developed some 3,000 years ago in the Zhou and Shang dynasties. With its bright and pure luster, jade has always been considered by the Chinese to be a treasure of tremendous value. There is a famous story from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) that describes the State of Qin’ s offer of 15 cities for a ceremonial jade disk known as the “Bi of the He Clan.” To create an object from a piece of raw material, the craftsperson follows these steps: 1) Select the stone (jadeite, coral, agate, or crystal), taking into consideration size, shape, grain, color and luster. 2) Design a pattern to be sketched onto the surface. 3) Rub away the stone with a special tool and diamond paste until the desired shape emerges. When the design follows the nature of the original piece, the true image will come to life. 4) Polish the product until it shines. The Beijing Jade ware Factory, founded in 1958 with only 200 workers, now employs over 2,700. In the past four decades it has turned out a wide range of exquisite jade objects for sale around the city.

83. The Holiday Zone: Thanksgiving Arts And Crafts
. teach the vocabulary phrases, What sound does a turkey make? / A turkey says, Gobble, Gobble. Discuss sounds made by other animals.
http://www.geocities.com/holidayzone/thanks/tgames.html
Gobble, Gobble, Cook Me! This is a Thanksgiving adaptation of Duck, Duck, Goose. Players sit on ground in large circle. One player is chosen as the turkey. The turkey must then select a cook who will try to catch him or her and roast him or her for Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey walks around the circle, patting each student lightly on the head and calling each student either "Gobble" or "Cook me!" As long as the turkey says, "Gobble," he or she is safe. When the turkey calls "Cook me!," however, the player tagged must jump up and chase the turkey around the circle. If the cook catches the turkey, the turkey must go sit in the center of the circle (the roasting pot). If the turkey sits in the cook's spot before the cook tags him or her, the turkey is safe, and the cook becomes the next turkey.
To use this game in an ESL or EFL setting . . .
  • Teach the vocabulary phrases, "What sound does a turkey make?" / "A turkey says, 'Gobble, Gobble." Discuss sounds made by other animals.
  • Explain that in the United States many people cook turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.
  • Teach or review basic game terminology (i.e. Make a circle. Sit down. Eun-soo, you begin. Eun-soo is walking around the circle. Eun-soo is patting Min-kyung on the head. Eun-soo says, "Gobble." Min-kyung was not chosen. Eun-soo is patting Gyu-ri on the head. Eun-soo says, "Cook me!" Eun-soo runs around the circle. Gyu-ri jumps up and chases him. She is not fast enough. Eun-soo sits down in Gyu-ri's spot. Eun-soo is safe. Gyu-ri is now the turkey.)

Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art Structure for the Use of Students and Teachers (left: Vase (floral design), c. 1910, earthenware, 8 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches, Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society) Word of Dow's teaching methods spread widely, not only through his teaching and writing, but also through the work of his students, many of whom later became art instructors themselves. As art training became a part of kindergarten, elementary, and high-school education, and more women began looking for careers that would use their artistic skills, students sought out programs such as those at Pratt Institute and Columbia University which emphasized practical skills in design and the decorative arts as well as teaching qualifications. Dow's lasting contribution was to teach art with an eye to both beauty and utility. His converts were many and his methods gave form and direction to American Modernist thought. use of living plants than any other art or craft. in which there was a long tradition of this art. apparently the first weaver ever to teach Pomo basketry

ARTS, CRAFTS
POMO BASKETMAKING: A SUPREME ART FOR THE WEAVER, Elsie Allen, Naturegraph Publishers, Happy Camp, CA; 800/390-5353. 1972, 1992 reprint, paperback, 67 pages, many black and white photos, $6.95. 87961-016-6 This book is very highly recommended. It is clearly written with numerous photographs and drawings, and will be accessible to younger readers, as well as the adults for whom it was written. Elsie's book is fascinating for anyone interested in baskets, Pomo people, or a Native woman's personal history woven into a life of an art and a craft that is more in harmony with nature, more environmentally-centred because of its use of living plants than any other art or craft. The Pomo basketmaker is, of ncessity, a natural scientist, and the necessities of the lat 20th century force her to be an environmentalist too, if her art is to survive. The basketmaker "worked constantly with sky and earth and living plants, with great patience and devotion, to create something of superlative beauty. She watched the sky and also felt the sky, its changing moods and signs of what was coming, so that she knew by the literal feel of the air, something reaching her inner being, that now was the time to make a trip to the eastern mountains to collect the inner bark of the Redbud tree...." So wrote publisher Vinson Brown, in an introduction to this book. I would add that later parts of Elsie Allen's life after the 72 years of it she chronicles here concern water, more than sky the drowning of a Pomo valley that had been the major source of basketry plants, especially sedge, whose roots are the sewing or weft, by the dam which now forms Lake Sonoma.

Don't teach me
Gillian Darley
In 1937, Goldfinger designed a terrace of three houses on Willow Road, facing Hampstead Heath. The central house was for his own family: it was flat-roofed and concrete-framed, and replaced some derelict cottages. Local opposition, orchestrated by the future Conservative home secretary, Henry Brooke, was fierce. Goldfinger - assisted by such influential neighbours as Roland Penrose, Flora Robson and Julian Huxley - successfully defended his design, citing its kinship to the formal articulation and clarity of the Georgian terrace. 'Only the Esquimeaux and Zulus,' he said, 'build anything but rectangular houses.' The houses were duly built, became widely admired as a paradigm of architectural virtue, and, when 2 Willow Road was presented to the National Trust in the mid-1990s, it was Henry Brooke's son Peter, the heritage secretary, who performed the ceremony. Nigel Warburton is not an architectural historian but a philosopher of aesthetics, who became intrigued by his subject after living in two very different Goldfinger buildings of the 1960s, the 27-storey Balfron Tower in the East End and the Motz House in Oxford. In this brisk account, he draws an understanding picture of Goldfinger's background and formative experience, which offers some explanation of his sense of being a prophet without honour.
