As he considered the fine arts equal in importance to the applied arts, he did not place precedence on one technique over another; instead, he urged his students to strive for beauty in their chosen medium. In 1899, at the close of a century marked by sweeping changes in all aspects of western art and culture, perhaps most notably the Industrial Revolution, Dow produced a manual that would change the teaching of art for nearly half a century. Form these three shapes, by slashing and spreading and dart manipulation, most doll clothing can be patterned. We also will be draping fabric onto your doll to create pants. The methods used for this class will be simple and easy to understand. When you are finished with this class you should be able to make patterns for doll clothing for any of your dolls.

OVER 60 YEARS OF SERVING SOLDIERS
After World War I the reductions to the Army left the United States with a small force. The War Department faced monumental challenges in preparing for World War II. One of those challenges was soldier morale. Recreational activities for off duty time would be important. The arts and crafts program informally evolved to augment the needs of the War Department. On January 9, 1941, the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, appointed Frederick H. Osborn, a prominent U.S. businessman and philanthropist, Chairman of the War Department Committee on Education, Recreation and Community Service. In 1941, the Fort Custer Army Illustrators, while on strenuous war games maneuvers in Tennessee, documented the exercise The Bulletin of the Museum of Modern Art Brigadier General Frederick H. Osborn and War Department leaders were concerned because few soldiers were using the off duty recreation areas that were available. Army commanders recognized that efficiency is directly correlated with morale, and that morale is largely determined from the manner in which an individual spends his own free time. Army morale enhancement through positive off duty recreation programs is critical in combat staging areas. To encourage soldier use of programs, the facilities drab and uninviting environment had to be improved. A program utilizing talented artists and craftsmen to decorate day rooms, mess halls, recreation halls and other places of general assembly was established by the Facilities Section of Special Services. The purpose was to provide an environment that would reflect the military tradition, accomplishments and the high standard of army life. The fact that this work was to be done by the men themselves had the added benefit of contributing to the esprit de corps (teamwork, or group spirit) of the unit.

MARILYN ANDERSON MAYA ARTS AND CRAFTS OF GUATEMALA From the book: A Note to Children, Parents and Teachers
Traditional crafts are mainly village crafts, done in the home or in small workshops. Often family members, including children, help or watch. Indeed, this is how crafts are transmitted from one generation to the next.
Many Maya craft techniques, such as backstrap-loom weaving, are ancient. And most of the materials used are natural and are found nearby: animal and vegetable fibers, wood, clay and leather. The use of such materials helps the environment; they are biodegradable, renewable, and do not have to be transported long distances.
In addition to their beauty, their social and cultural significance, their economic value and their ecological impact, arts and crafts are important because of the lessons they can teach:
As the drawings and captions of this book suggest, another lesson that can be learned about arts and crafts is their vulnerability. The introduction of new materials and technology, the creation of new markets, the exposure to different cultures, the disruption of society due to civil conflict all present challenges to cultures in which traditional arts and crafts are imbedded. As fewer Maya wear traditional dress and as more of them speak Spanish, as they spend more time working outside their own communities, the transmission of crafts from generation to generation becomes more difficult. This coloring hook is intended to provide an informative guide to Guatemalan Maya arts and crafts that can help to increase young people's awareness not only of the value of crafts but also their fragility. For young Guatemalans the hope is that the coloring book can help them to appreciate their heritage, to value the role of arts and crafts in their culture, and help them to decide how they will sustain arts and crafts in their changing society. For other young people, the hope is that the book can help them to better appreciate arts and crafts, to recognize the extent to which industrialization has transformed the role of crafts in their own society, and to understand the impact of such transformation on the lives of the Maya and other peoples whose societies are rapidly changing today. For both Guatemalan and other youth, perhaps the book can help them to consider the question "Who gains and who loses if crafts disappear?"

The University of Vermont http://www.uvm.edu/llcenter/ Arts and Crafts for “Outsider Artists Program Overview
In the Arts and Crafts for “Outsider Artists” program participants will share their love of “arts and crafts” with fellow suite mates. This program is designed to allow participants to explore arts and crafts without being an art major or even having an art minor. You will not have to be a trained artist; you will just have to love to create your own masterpieces. In addition to giving participants the opportunity to work and play with new medium we will also explore the history and cultural origin of several types of arts and crafts, and we will investigate various elements of the Outsider Art movement. Even when creating traditional arts and crafts, students will think alternatively to make their ideas their own. By the end of the year we will all have become “outsider artists,” able to express our creative sides through areas of arts and crafts not typically thought of as skilled art. Outsider Art is all about expression and freedom to show what you can do without having an art background. Outsider art is defined as creative pieces of art work, whether painting, drawing, sculpting, or any type of construction by people with no formal art training. They have chosen not to get themselves involved in the mainstream art world because the art is made mainly for themselves and their community. The art formed by these artists is often simple and free from the constraints of traditional art. The subjects and materials of the art vary through many mediums. Many outsider artists go unrecognized for a very long time, but once discovered are often sought after by art collectors. (http://www.interestingideas.com/out/what.htm)

Community Craft Center and Cooperative The Community Craft Center was founded in 1970 by Grace Foster and Sara Shepard Starr, working with the Anderson County Community Action Commission. The stated purpose was, "to enrich the souls and pocketbooks of low-income people in Anderson County." The original members assisted each other in teaching, producing, and selling hand crafts. They met in one room of a country store and eventually bought the entire store. The non-profit charter for the Community Craft Center was recorded in Nashville in November, 1974. The not-for-profit charter for the Community Craft Co-Op was recorded in March, 1977. In addition to the Community Action Commission, early assistance was provided by Good Neighbors of Norris, The Tennessee Arts Commission and John Rice Irwin of the Museum of Appalachia. Weaving, quilting, and pottery departments were established to teach these skills on a regular, on-going basis. Looms, potters' wheels, a kiln, quilting frames, and other equipment were obtained. All crafts sold in the shop were juried to ensure a high standard of quality.

Safety in Children's Arts and Crafts Projects
This NebGuide discusses the steps to take to ensure safety with arts and crafts materials and environments. Shirley Niemeyer, Extension Specialist, Home Environment Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Arts and crafts activities let young children express themselves creatively. If you offer arts and crafts, it's important to have safe products and tools for the children in your care to use. Some arts and crafts products contain solvents or materials that may expose children to toxic ingredients, fumes, or dusts. The Center for Occupational Hazards recommends not letting children under 12 years of age use toxic art products. The center suggests checking the labels on art materials, and using only those identified as safe for children's use. It's not easy to determine which arts and crafts tools and materials are safe for children. Some materials contain toxic or harmful chemicals, yet their labels will have inadequate information about ingredients or precautions such as whether they are safe for children.
Arts and crafts product labels
Always read the packaging label on any arts and crafts product or tool. Follow carefully the directions and precautions listed on the label.
