Dear friends and colleagues, gives down-to-earth advice about how to make money from craft products. More publications and videos than ever before are available about the work of gifted students and recognised artists with a visual impairment. And yet we have to move on, explore more of those new ideas and rediscover the virtues of older ones - one seldom reinvents the wheel! It is our job here at RNIB to support new ideas and to channel resources where the need is most felt. So last year we were able to provide grants to arts and crafts projects which involve people from various ethnic backgrounds or people with additional disabilities and projects which demonstrate cooperation with arts or crafts organisations. We will continue to encourage such projects. 1993 is also the European Year of Older People and a number of events will take place throughout the European Community to celebrate this. Should you have an arts and crafts idea which can bring pleasure and change perceptions of older people within your local community, we will try to help.

It is fitting to celebrate knitting, one of the most popular leisure time activities. Indeed, some 34% of women engage in knitting, and some 26% of women who have a visual impairment. Knitting has always been popular, and the earliest knitting book for visually impaired people known to us dates back to 1829. It was published by the then Institut Royale des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris under the title "Le tricot sans aiguilles" (Knitting without needles). It is a particularly rare publication, because it was printed in boldened alphabetical letters, a system abandoned and superseded only in Britain by the Moon alphabet. The book can be admired (under showcase) at the Musée Valentin Haüy, 5 rue Duroc, one of many visitor attractions of Paris. Arts and Crafts News Number 15 is made up of all this and a little bit more.

  • Blessed are those who have fixed their gaze on the realm of glory and have followed the commandments of the Lord of Names. Blessed is he who in the days of God will engage in handicrafts. This is a bounty from God, for in this Most Great Dispensation it is acceptable in the sight of God for man to occupy himself in a trade which relieveth him of depending upon charity. The craft of every craftsman is regarded as worship.
  • One of the names of God is the Fashioner. He loveth craftsmanship. Therefore any of His servants who manifesteth this attribute is acceptable in the sight of this Wronged One. Craftsmanship is a book among the books of divine sciences, and a treasure among the treasures of His heavenly wisdom. This is a knowledge with meaning, for some of the sciences are brought forth by words and come to an end with words.
  • God grant that thou wilt exert thine utmost to acquire perfections, as well as proficiency in a craft.

    PHILOSOPHY OF COURSE:
The student that has elected Arts and Crafts will be expected to develop processes and techniques in crafts that could be used throughout a lifetime. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on projects. PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATION:
Evaluation is based on the observation of process and final product. The student's degree of competence in the technical skills associated with the processes of media, evidence of understanding and applying concepts associated with visual language in their own art products, and the visual and verbal literacy associated with aesthetics and criticism through oral responses will be compared to specific declared lesson objectives.
    For example:
Does the student produce work that is functional?
Does the student's work exhibit pleasing design qualities?
Does the student exhibit a high degree of craftsmanship in his work?
Important attitudes associated with the visual arts will also be evaluated through observation of exhibited behaviors.
    For example:
    Does the student value craftsmanship?

    TEACHER'S GUIDE
    UNIT 4...ARTS, CRAFTS and CLOTHING

Like all American Indian groups, those people living in the Villages near the confluence on the Knife and Missouri Rivers of North Dakota made tools, housewares, clothing, toys, and musical instruments from things that were available nearby or sometimes farther off if the material was important in the production of the item.
Knife River flint, a dark-brown glassy quartz material, was used extensively by Knife River Indian Villagers in the manufacture of chipped stone tools. The largest concentrations of the material are found in Dunn and Mercer Counties of western North Dakota.
A predictable chipping pattern made Knife River flint valuable as a raw material for stone tool manufacture. Gathered from pre-Ice Age deposits, flint was utilized in tool manufacture not only by the Villagers but by many Native American groups for the past 11,000 years. Arrowheads are what we think of when we think of stone tools, but Native Americans made tools from flint for scraping hides and shaping wood and bone; piercing tools like awls and drills; cutting tools like knives; and chopping tools like axes. People traveled great distances to gather the raw material. It is believed that preshaped tools, called blanks, were locally made and then traded to people living greater distances from the quarries. It was so important a trade item that projectile points made from it have been found in sites as far away as Missouri and Ohio.
