James Abbott McNeill Whistler James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born on July 10, 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Whistler spent part of his childhood and most of his mature life in Europe. After three years at the West Point Military Academy, he went in 1855 to Paris, where he worked for two years in Gleyre’s studio and later became an associate of Fantin-Latour, Legros, and Courbet. He exhibited in the Salon des Refusés in 1863, and throughout his career he associated with his more experimental contemporaries. Whistler was an extrovert who often allowed fact to become merged with fiction. His litigious nature made him a legend in his own lifetime. In 1896, he become President of the Society of British Artists. Whistler referred to himself as "the butterfly" and used a butterfly motif as his signature. Whistler died in 1903 in London. “James McNeill Whistler’s position in the history of British art is as paradoxical as his personality: flamboyant dandy and wit, he was also a serious craftsman, tirelessly dedicated to the perfection of his art. Having learned much from his French and English contemporaries, he nevertheless emerged as an isolated figure who attracted followers but established no leading style.” He died in London on July 17, 1903.

James McNeill Whistler Charles Gleyre Henri Fantin-Latour Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) and Edouard Manet , and writers such as Charles Baudelaire and William Thackeray. He relocated to London in 1859 but made frequent visits to France. He led the revival of etching with his Twelve Etchings from Nature (the "French Set," 1858) and etchings of the Thames River (the "Thames Set," 1861). His paintings of the 1860's were controversial for their Courbet inspired realism, subdued colors, flat spaces, lack of narrative or rhetorical effect, and borrowings from Japanese decor and woodcut design. Despite the subdued and subtle quality of his art, he made his reputation as a provocative art critic, acerbic wit, and flamboyant dandy in the style of his friend Oscar Wilde (1854-1900); he lived lavishly and was often in debt. In the early 1860's Whistler met and Albert Moore (1841-1893); with Moore he developed the tenets of "Art for Art's sake," titling his works after musical compositions to affirm that they should be seen for their abstract qualities, free of the literary or moral ideals of the Pre-Raphaelites . The shipping magnate F.R. Leyland backed Whistler's first one man exhibition in 1874, but Whistler's willfully exotic decorations for Leyland's London house (1876-77) lost Whistler money and his patron. When

The exhibition opens runs through Oct. 17, 1999. A brilliant artist and fascinating personality, Whistler was strongly influenced by the etchings he saw in France in the 1850s. He played a central role in the English etching revival and greatly influenced American collectors and painter-etchers, who were late arrivals to the international etching movement. Whistler's work commanded respect from a wide-ranging audience including Charles Baudelaire, who described the artist's prints as the "profound and intricate poetry of a vast capital." The impressions of Whistler's etchings shown in the exhibition all came from the collection of George W. Davison (1872-1953, B.A. Wesleyan 1892), a New York banker, discerning print collector, and benefactor of the Davison Art Center. It was primarily through the generosity of Mr. Davison that the collection has such outstanding holdings of prints by Whistler as well as by his English and European forerunners. Whistler and Haden were among the most important figures associated with the etching revival in England during the second half of the 19th century. Both men emphasized the importance of original etching as opposed to illustration, an idea which had a lasting effect on the work of their younger American contemporaries.
