James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) Biography During the winter of 1861-1862, Whistler returned to Paris, where he painted 'Symphony in White, No. I: The White Girl'. This painting was rejected for the Royal Academy exhibition of 1862, but 'The Coast of Brittany' and 'The Thames in Ice' were accepted. That summer he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the critic Algernon Swinburne, and in late December he moved to Chelsea. In 1863 'The White Girl' was rejected by the Paris Salon and exhibited at the Salon des Refus©s, where it drew much attention. In 1864 Whistler began his Japonisme inspired works, including 'Symphony in White, No.2: The Little White Girl' which was exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year. In late 1865 he went to the seaside town of Trouville, where the French painter Gustave Courbet was also working. He continued painting seascapes at Valparaiso, Chile, in March 1866, returning to England later that year. In the spring of 1867 'Symphony in White, No.3', the first of his works to be exhibited with a musical title, was shown at the Royal Academy. Over the next three decades he produced a number of portraits, including 'Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother'. In the early 1870s he began his series of ethereal landscapes entitled Nocturnes. 'Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket' caused a controversy when exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877: the critic John Ruskin accused Whistler of insolence for charging "two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public's face." Whistler responded by charging Ruskin with libel. The ensuing trial of November 1878 involved many of the major figures of the Victorian art world: William Powell Frith and Edward Burne-Jones testified on Ruskin's behalf, while Albert Moore and William Michael Rossetti suppored Whistler. Whistler won the trial and was awarded one farthing in damages.

HOME ART EDUCATION GREAT ARTISTS IN HISTORY - JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) 'As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight . . .' IMPORTANT DATES James Abbot McNeill Whistler was born in America, yet he spent much of his life abroad. Early years were spent in Russia and then in London, only moving back to America with his family out of necessity when his father died of cholera. While a child in Russia, Whistler had attended drawing classes, but it wasn't until 1855 after dropping out of West Point Military Academy that he embarked on an artistic career. He moved back to Europe from America, settling in Paris. This was the beginning of a lifetime commitment to art. He quickly made his presence felt due to his flamboyant, eccentric ways. He would go about Paris wearing a straw hat, a white suit, highly polished black patent leather shoes and a monocle. While in France Gustave Courbet, the Realist painter, was an early influence on his art. He then moved to London in 1859 where he discovered, and made etchings of, what was to be one of his favourite subjects, the River Thames. In London he met Joanna Heffernan, a captivating red-head. She modelled for him and was his companion for the following seven years. Joanna is seen in the controversial

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903). American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in in 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the third son of West Point graduate and civil engineer Major George Washington Whistler, and his second wife Anna Matilda McNeill. After brief stays in Stonington, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, the Whistlers moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Major served as an civil engineer for the construction of a railroad line to Moscow. James Abbott was aged nine when his family moved to Russia, and he spent several of his childhood years there, studying drawing at the Imperial Academy of Science. He soon became an inveterate traveller. In 1848 he went to live with his sister and her husband in London, and after his father's death the following year the family returned to the United States and settled in Pomfret, Connecticut. Whistler enrolled in the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, where he excelled in Robert W. Weir's drawing class. He was dismissed from the academy in 1854 for "deficiency in chemistry", and after brief periods working for the Winans Locomotive Works in Baltimore, and the drawings division of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (he learnt etching as a US navy cartographer), resolved to become an artist and moved to Europe permanently in 1855. Whistler settled in Paris first, where he studied at the Ecole Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin, before entering the Académie Gleyre. He made copies in the Louvre, acquired a lasting admiration for

, artist. Following an unsuccessful career at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Whistler worked for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey where he strengthened his skills in the graphic arts, particularly in the medium of engraving. In 1855 he moved to Europe to pursue an artistic career. He settled permanently in London in 1859, traveling frequently to Paris to visit friends and keep abreast of developments in French art. Whistler associated himself with that circle of artists espousing the avant-garde theories of the realists. Through Henri Fantin-Latour he met such artists as Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, and Edgar Degas. After Whistler exhibited his painting The White Girl (1862) in the famous Salon des Refusés of 1863 (which coincidentally featured Manet's controversial Le déjeuner sur l'herbe ), critics and artists alike began to take notice of his work. This painting, later given the additional title Symphony in White No. 1

WHISTLER-On the 17th inst at his residence, Cheyne-walk, Chelsea, James MacNeill Whistler. The service will be held at Old Chelsea Church today (Wednesday) at 11 o clock; the interment will take place at Chiswick Old Church.
Obituary - The Times Saturday July 18, 1903
    DEATH OF MR WHISTLER
e regret to learn that Mr Whistler, the artist, died yesterday afternoon at Chelsea.
James Abbott MacNeill Whistler was American by birth, and French by artistic training and sympathy; and French American he remained to the end, in spite of his long residence in London. He liked to wrap a certain veil of mystery around his early years, but there seems no doubt that he was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in the year 1834, or a little earlier. His father was Major George Washington Whistler, an engineer, and his mother a lady of the Baltimore family of Winane - this southern strain of blood helping to explain the extraordinary unlikeness of the most volatile of painters to the staid and serious stock of puritan New England. In Whistler’s boyhood his father accepted a position as railway engineer in Russia, and in that country the future painter appears to have spent some years.
In 1851 he returned to America and entered as a student at West Point Military Academy, where he remained for four years; and for a short time afterwards he seems to have been in Government employment-whether military or civil does not appear-as a maker of maps and charts. There is a story of a spoilt plate, the young artist having scratched some fancies of his own upon it: of confiscation, a reprimand, a Whistlerian repartee, and the consequent departure to Paris and to the free life of the studios of the Quartier Latin. This was about 1857, and some time afterwards, in

    Pierrot (Oudezijds Achterburgwal)
    c. 1889; Ink on paper/Dry-point and etching, 22.9 x 16.1 cm; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam The back of a house reflected in the water of an Amsterdam canal. There are two people in the doorway on the waterfront: a man leaning against a post (a dreamy figure, perhaps the Pierrot of the title?) and a woman leaning over the water. The building and the water are rendered with rough areas of hatching which leave large areas of black. A vague reflection of the two figures is visible in the water. James McNeill Whistler made this print in 1889, when he spent two months in the Netherlands. In fact, the artist visited this country several times. He found the rivers and canals inspiring and was especially enthralled by Amsterdam. In a series of prints he recorded his favorite parts of the city: the picturesque canals of the slum areas with their delapidated houses and rows of washing lines.
    City on water
Whistler depicted the city from the water. He sailed around on a boat and recorded what he saw from his low perspective: the water, the quayside and the basements of the canalside houses. Inspired by Rembrandt 's etchings, Whistler breathed new life into the art form. He experimented with a range of etching and print techniques. Whistler's Amsterdam etchings influenced several other artists, including Witsen (who also had a small studio on a boat) and Breitner, who recorded his impressions of the city in photos and paintings.

Powells: Art Best Sellers Posters Art Prints Whistler, Women and Fashion by Susan Grace Galassi, et al Book Description Costume and fashion were a lifelong obsession for James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). His exquisite depictions of women and the details of their clothing contributed to his career as one of the most accomplished and successful—if controversial—artists of the nineteenth century. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on fashion in Whistler's art as a key to understanding his life and work and as a new means of exploring his relationship with women and his portraits of them. The book offers new insights into some of Whistler’s most beloved masterpieces in the context of art and fashion in the Victorian period. Illustrated with paintings, pastels, prints, and drawings by Whistler, the book also presents photographs of his sitters, contemporary costumes, works by other artists of the period, and artifacts from Whistler's studio.
