There's nothing behind it. Thus Andy Warhol described himself, being deliberately enigmatic with regard to the depth of his talent. Having received a degree in pictorial design in 1949, he began his professional career as a window dresser and later as a commercial illustrator. He derived his subject matter from popular culture and established himself as a prime mover in the Pop Art movement with his paintings of Campbell's Soup cans. Andy Warhol (Andrew Warhola) was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is considered by many as the most influential American artist of the second half of the 20th century. Warhol's signature style used commercial silkscreening techniques to create identical, mass produced images on canvas, then variations in color to give each print of an edition a different look. Warhol first applied his silkscreen techniques as a commercial artist in the 1950s. Window displays of a Fifth Avenue department store featured his comicbook superhero images. His initial forays into the POP ART came in the early 1960s with his Coca-Cola Bottles (1962) and sculptures of Brillo Boxes (1964), which brought worldwide recognition. Condemned as consumerism by many critics, his work was enthusiastically accepted in Europe, Australia and Japan. Later in the 1960s, Warhol produced a series of motion pictures dealing with such concepts as time, boredom and repetition. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal. Warhol's generally sunny and upbeat artwork turned to more serious subjects in his images of Jacqueline Kennedy mourning the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, and his "Birmingham Race Riot" (1964). His "Endangered Species" prints (1983) including "Pine Barrens Tree Frog," the "Orangutan" and the "Bald Eagle," inspired concern, not at the subjects themselves, but at their possible absence.

Andy Warhol Contents Search Links Email Warhol started as a commercial artist and illustrator and was also a store-window designer. He always kept in tune with the trends and fashions of the moment. Up until the early 60s footwear was a recurring theme in Warhol’s work. Many critics see this as his most important commercial phase. He was an undisguised fetishist and once had an idea to sell film stars’ underwear, washed at $15 and more for unwashed underwear. However, this idea never came to fruition. The early pictures Warhol painted in the 60s used graphic motifs taken from advertising and comics. He drew on these comics for inspiration and changed the small illustrations into paintings. In 1961 Warhol exhibited some of these works in the window displays of the Bonwit Teller department store. He ‘borrowed’ images from other sources and some of his images were complete rip-offs of other people’s images, and yet the public loved it. Roy Liechtenstein did the same thing with his pop-art comic book images. Warhol stunned the world with his iconic and ironic treatment of the humble soup tin and other supermarket goods. As a result of this he was constantly appearing in the press.
