Catharton
Artists W : Warhol, Andy Andy Warhol (real name Andrew Warhola) 6th August 1928 - 22nd February 1987
Born in Pittsburgh to Czechoslovakian parents, Andy Warhol graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949 and went on to work as a professional illustrator.
The conjunction of commerce and art seemed to lead to his big break. In 1962 the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles held an exhibition of his personal artwork including the now famous Campbell's Soup Cans. The soup cans made him (ironically, of course) a household name, at least in the art world. Andrew Warhola became one of the first and most famous members of the Pop Art set.
For many years after the exhibition he produced what is considered to be his best work, often based around altered and painted-over photographs, and poorly duplicated screen-print reproductions of his work.
Warhol's art often dealt with the superficial nature of the modern celebrity. When he is mentioned nowadays, it is most often in conjunction with a remark he made (although I can't for the life of me find out when or where he is supposed to have said it), that: 'In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.'
A member of Warhol's circle, Valerie Solanas, is probably best known to the world for producing the SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, a pamphlet explaining how the male of the species should be systematically removed from society. In 1968, the year she published the manifesto, Solanas shot Andy Warhol. His health never fully recovered (he once remarked 'I always wished I had died, and I still wish that, because I could have gotten the whole thing over with.'), and the incident may have helped drive him to an early grave. After the shooting, Warhol concentrated on making experimental films.

More Than a Museum The Andy Warhol Museum is a vital forum in which diverse audiences of artists, scholars and the general public are galvanized through creative interaction with the art and life of Andy Warhol. The Warhol is ever-changing and constantly re-defining itself in relation to contemporary life, using its unique collections and dynamic, interactive programming as tools. Located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh, The Warhol is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and is a collaborative project of the Carnegie Institute, Dia Center for the Arts, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. Opened in 1994, the Museum features extensive permanent collections of art and archives on one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. It is also a primary resource for anyone seeking insights into contemporary art and popular culture.

"I'd prefer to remain a mystery. I never like to give my background and, anyway, I make it all up different every time I'm asked." H e was one of the most enigmatic figures in American art. His work became the definitive expression of a culture obsessed with images. He was surrounded by a coterie of beautiful bohemians with names like Viva, Candy Darling, and Ultra Violet. He held endless drug- and sex-filled parties, through which he never stopped working. He single-handedly confounded the distinctions between high and low art. His films are pivotal in the formation of contemporary experimental art and pornography. He spent the final years of his life walking around the posh neighborhoods of New York with a plastic bag full of hundred dollar bills, buying jewelry and knick knacks. His name was Andy Warhol, and he changed the nature of art forever. GLAMOUR, VOGUE, and HARPER'S BAZAAR. In the mid-'50s he became the chief illustrator for I. Miller Shoes, and in 1957 a shoe advertisement won him the Art Director's Club Medal. Jasper Johns , Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg and came to be known as Pop Art.

Album Cover Artists
Soon after its introduction in the 1950s, the LP began to offer a medium for the marriage of the musical arts to the visual arts. The appeal of LPs over CDs continues today for certain collectors who find the larger visual canvas of the LP to be esthetically superior. Five decades of intermingling art with music has left a certain expectation that such a coupling is just in the natural order of things. So, perhaps the biggest challenge with the evolution of audio technologies like mp3 is not encryption or intellectual property protection, but in somehow attaching visual art to the sound file. Check back in the future, since additional covers will be added as I get the time and images (feel free to suggest any LP covers that have been conspicuosly excluded from any artist gallery). My thanks to collector extraordinaire, Erik Bruggeling, for either supplying many of the images on these pages, or making suggestions about images that were missing! "Andy Warhol began as a commercial illustrator, and a very successful one, doing jobs like shoe ads for I. Miller in a stylish blotty line that derived from Ben Shahn. He first exhibited in an art gallery in 1962, when the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles showed his 32 Campbell's Soup Cans , 1961-62. From then on, most of Warhol's best work was done over a span of about six years, finishing in 1968, when he was shot. And it all flowed from one central insight: that in a culture glutted with information, where most people experience most things at second or third hand through TV and print, through images that become banal and disassociated by repeated again and again and again, there is role for affectless art. You no longer need to be hot and full of feeling. You can be supercool, like a slightly frosted mirror. Not that Warhol worked this out; he didn't have to. He felt it and embodied it. He was a conduit for a sort of collective American state of mind in which celebrity - the famous image of a person, the famous brand name - had completely replaced both sacredness and solidity. All About Art - Artists and Their Styles
This entry is designed to educate elementary age children about artists, styles of art, and various works of art. Short biographies on approximately twelve artists are included. These describe the lives of the artists, the styles in which they painted, and names some of their famous works. In addition to the artists, the site describes a number of styles of art, including characteristics of the style, and famous artists whose work was done in that style. The members of this team then created their own art work in the different styles, and provided these as examples of how that style of art looks. As a fun way to test how much site visitors have learned, two interactive games, Hangman, and an All About Art Quiz, are available to site visitors. Finally, to further encourage site visitors to explore the world of art further, the page provides links to a number of other art sites on the internet, with descriptions of what visitors can find at those sites.
