Jan Vermeer BACK
A Dutch painter mainly active as an art dealer; a member and eventual president of the Painters' Guild at Delft. It is thought that he did not sell one of his paintings; there survive few contemporary references to his works and he seems to have died in poverty. Over half the paintings attributed to him were in his house at the time of his death. Vermeer's use of light gave his paintings a silent clarity, the sensation of a moment preserved, of recording that quality of simply existing. His choice of subjects was undramatic; typically a scene of complete ordinariness. There are only 35 works by Vermeer known to exist.
An excerpt from Vermmer The Complete Works by Arthur Wheelock
Vermeer employed many devices beyond his expressive use of light, color, and perspective to extend the meanings of his scenes. In a number of works he included objects imbued with symbolic associations. Paintings within his interiors frequently provide commentaries on the scene transpiring before them, as, for example, the Last ludgment hanging within Woman Holding a Balance, or the painting of Cupid holding aloft a card in A Lady Standing at the Virginal, a reference to an image in Otto van Veen's popular emblem book, Amorum Emblemata, 1608, that admonishes the reader to have but one lover. Vermeer, in fact, frequently painted figures playing music, exploring in these works themes of love and harmony so often associated with musical instruments. Similarly, he used maps, letters, pearls, and water pitchers as focal points within his compositions because their symbolic associations were fundamental to the meanings he wished to infuse into them.

Dutch Painter
Jan Vermeer was relatively unknown as an artist during his lifetime, and went undiscovered for nearly 200 years after his death. He also went by three different names, to add to his mystique. His work is now appreciated for its optical precision, a technique which was far ahead of its time.

Jan Vermeer
Back to Art in the Baroque Chronology Jan Vermeer (Vur-mear) was born in the small Dutch town of Delft in 1632. There he stayed his whole life, making a living as an independent art dealer and painter. He died in 1675 at the age of 43. Vermeer painted ordinary things like his own home, his children and neighbors. He seems not driven to find meaning in anything more complex. Rather, he expressed a wealth of meaning in a pitcher, in an oriental rug, or in a yellow piece of fabric. Like his Dutch contemporaries, he painted mostly middle-class people engaged in totally commonplace actions. Yet his paintings are "reflective of the values of a comfortable domesticity that has a simple beauty" (Kleiner, p. 862). In the 17th century, capitalism in the Netherlands worked its way into the art world. This freed artists like Vermeer from the influence of wealthy patrons like the church or the monarchy. As a result, Vermeer was more concerned with how things actually look than with any philosophical or religious agenda in his work. Dutch painters like him became interested in the way light works and in the physical act of seeing. This was part of a revolutionary scientific view of the world which was increasingly being extended into all fields of experience. Vermeer and his peers were faithful to appearance, not to theories or religion. "A thousand years and more of religious iconography are dismissed by a European people who ask for a vision of the world from which angels, saints and deities have been banished" (Kleiner, p. 854).

    http://www.csun.edu/~hcarh001/496/cameraobscurapaper.html
Art historians have debated for decades whether or not Jan Vermeer used a camera obscura to compose and paint his works. The issue is still unresolved and will probably remain that way, largely due to lack of documentation. Very little is known about Vermeer's life and even less is known about his working methods. No notebooks, letters, or preparatory drawings have been found that might shed some light on the use of optical devices, such as the camera obscura, by Dutch artists in the seventeenth century.1 The Dutch artists' interest in optical devices grew out of the interests of their society as a whole. Dutch pictures describe every aspect of human life, from the natural world around them to the texture of a piece of fabric. Naturally, artists would be interested in any instrument or tool that would aid them in representing the world as faithfully as possible.2 The earliest camera obscuras were simply a dark room with a ray of light entering through a small hole in one wall. An image of an outside object would be projected onto the wall opposite the light source. By the middle of the sixteenth century, Giovanni Battista della Porta had suggested that artists could make use of the camera obscura3 and portable versions of the optical device were produced by the 1650s.4 A standard eighteenth century example of the device would have a double convex lens and a mirror placed inside a small box. The artist would then stand with his back to the subject and place his head and hands into the enclosure, keeping out as much light as possible. An image of the object to be drawn was reflected off the mirror and through the lens onto the bottom of the camera obscura. The artist could then focus and trace the image of the original subject onto a piece of paper placed at the bottom of the enclosure.5

    37. JAN VERMEER AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Landscape and topographical city views became popular, and some artists like jan vermeer even began depicting maps in their paintings.
    http://www.csun.edu/~hcarh001/496/mainpaper.html
Today, communication relies almost completely on technology. It seems that everyone has a cellular phone, email, or at the very least, an answering machine. Information from all over the world is so easy to access now that most people take it for granted. Until this century, advancements in communication technology were separated by hundreds or even thousands of years. Until the introduction of paper to Europe in the 15th century, books were hand-copied on pages made from animal skins. This method of production was far too labor-intensive and costly to allow anyone but the wealthiest nobleman to own a copy of a book. The development of the printing press in the mid-15th century opened up a whole new realm of possibilities. Books could now be inexpensively mass-produced. With books now available and affordable to the general public, texts other than the Bible were being printed. These other books were often written in the vernacular or spoken language of the general public, rather than in the Latin characteristic of the Bible. Most importantly, this widespread availability of printed texts was accompanied by a rise in the literacy rate. With more and more people becoming literate, written communication became more common.1 The 17th century was an Age of Exploration and the population of the Netherlands exemplified this way of looking at the world. A large section of the public, both upper- and working-class, was literate.2 The quest for knowledge was a central theme of this time, whether in the arts or in the sciences. In the arts, artists often depicted communication technologies like letters and maps, while scientists were busy developing and improving optical devices like the

    The Confidence Artists
v1.0.3 / 01 jan 04 / greg goebel / public domain * Frauds are a part of day-to-day life, with messages promising easy money flooding over the Internet, and the telephone ringing with someone with a big story to sell. Such frauds are annoying not just because they are scams, but because they are artless. However, there have been a few confidence artists with considerably more class. They were certainly crooks and generally got what they deserved in the end, but they didn't think small and some of them had style. This document tells the story of some of history's greatest confidence artists. [1] CHARLES PONZI AND HIS PYRAMID
[2] VICTOR LUSTIG, THE MAN WHO SOLD THE EIFFEL TOWER

[3] DR. ALBERT ABRAMS, KING OF THE QUACKS

[4] HAN VAN MEEGEREN, THE HERO IN SPITE OF HIMSELF
[1] CHARLES PONZI AND HIS PYRAMID
    * Charles Ponzi was a little Italian immigrant to the United States who became one of the greatest swindlers in American history. Most people have never heard of Ponzi, but the term "Ponzi Pyramid" is fairly well known, and even those who haven't heard of that know about its modern version, the MAKE MONEY FAST schemes that were popular at one time on the Internet before they were replaced by better scams. Parts of Charles Ponzi's life are hard to determine for certain, as Ponzi himself was an incurable liar. He was born in Parma, Italy, in 1882, and emigrated to the United States in 1903. He would later claim that he had been a student at a university in Italy and decided to emigrate when he ran out of money, but other accounts suggest he was an inept petty thief who always got caught, and his family finally decided to get rid of him by shipping him across the Atlantic.
