Linda LaMarche Grade 5/6 Georges-Pierre Seurat by Amy But before committing himself to become an artist, Seurat left to join a military service in Brest. While in Brest, he painted several paintings of the sea and beaches. In 1880, he went back to Paris to study more art with Lehmann. On Easter morning, when Seurat was at the age of 32, just before Madeleine was about to have their second child, Seurat died from meningitis. Seurat was influenced by many artists. Including Rembrandt, Francisco de Goya, Ingres and Delacroix. These are very few of the artists Seurat was influenced by. Other artists Georges Seurat by Lara Grieve One artist who was directly influenced by, but who also rebelled against, the Impressionist movement was Georges Seurat (1859-91). Although his career, in which he produced only seven major works, was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 31, he was an influential and important artistic figure. Seurat was born into a family of inventors and manufacturers. He was taught art at the École des Beaux-Arts under a disciple of Ingres, Henri Lehmann. Importantly he not only studied the work of Delacroix, the Barbizon painters and the Impressionists but also detailed art theory, particularly that of colour. One crucial colour theory was derived from the technique of tapestry-making where colours could not be mixed, like pigment in painting, but had to be created through juxtaposed thread. This theory, as well as the idea of the intense quality of colour in light, rather than pigment, led Seurat to develop a technique of breaking up colour much more systematically than any of the Impressionists had done. He called his theory, developed from these ideas, Chromo-luminism . Like Pissarro, who was by the mid 1880s tiring of Impressionism, Seurat wished to move away from their romantic ideals towards a more scientific mode of painting.

As a young boy, Seurat was much influenced by his uncle, who painted as a hobby and took his nephew on frequent art expeditions. Seurat realized early on that he wanted to be an artist, and at age 15, he began taking drawing classes. He continued his classical art education by attending the School of Fine Arts in Paris. During his ten-year art career, Seurat spent most of his time on just seven large paintings, working for a year or more on each one. He became the leader of a group of artists called neo-Impressionists, who subscribed to his scientific theories of art and painted with dots and dashes of pure color. His colour theories were influential, but his main achievement was the marrying of an Impressionist palette to Classical composition. Two of his most recognized paintings are "Une Baignade" (A Bather, 1883-4) and "Un Dimanche d'été à la Grande-Jatte" (Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte, 1884-6), painted in a Divisionist style. In 1891, Seurat died suddenly of diphtheria at the age of 31.
