for the art lover GEORGES SEURAT
During his short life, Georges-Pierre Seurat was an innovator in an age of innovators in the field of art. This french painter was a leader in a movement called neo-impressionist in the late 19th century. Unlike the broad brushstrokes of the impressionist, Seurat developed a technique called pointillism or divisonism. In this method, he used small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create the subtle changes contained within the painting. Seurat was an art scientist in that he spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects would change the look or texture of a canvas. He was painstaking in his work, the technique he chose taking much longer to produce a work of art. Even so in his life, he produced over 500 paintings or drawings. Seurat was born in Paris on December 2, 1859, in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. While at the institute, the young Seurat was strongly influenced by works of Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. A private man, Seurat after he was an established artist, would produce one large canvas a year for a total of seven monumental paintings. Along with this he produced 60 smaller paintings. He was very regimented, spending his winters in Paris and his summers on France's northern coast. In 1891, his life was cut short suddenly at the age of 31 in Paris, but even in this short time, his impact on the world of art will withstand the ages.

Examples of his work are 'Bathers at Asmieres' 1884 (National Gallery, London) and 'Sunday on the Island la Grande Jatte' 1886 (Art Institute of Chicago). Seurat also departed from Impressionism by evolving a more formal type of composition based on classical proportions on the golden section, rather then aiming to capture fleeting moments of light and movement. selected bibliography

Seurat, Georges
(b. Dec. 2, 1859, Parisd. March 29, 1891, Paris)
Painter, founder of the 19th-century French school of Neo-Impressionism whose technique for portraying the play of light using tiny brushstrokes of contrasting colours became known as Pointillism. Using this techique, he created huge compositions with tiny, detached strokes of pure colour too small to be distinguished when looking at the entire work but making his paintings shimmer with brilliance. Works in this style include Une Baignade (1883-84) and Un dimanche après-midi à l'Ile de la Grande Jatte A French painter who was a leader in the neo-impressionist movement of the late 19th century, Georges Seurat is the ultimate example of the artist as scientist. He spent his life studying color theories and the effects of different linear structures. His 500 drawings alone establish Seurat as a great master, but he will be remembered for his technique called pointillism, or divisionism, which uses small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form. George Seurat
George Seurat was born on December 2, 1859 in Paris. His father was a native to Champagne, and his mother was a Parisian. He lived at 100 Boulevard Magenta with his parents, a brother, Emile, and a sister, Marie-Berthe. In 1875 Seurat took drawing lessons under the sculptor Justin Lequien. Seurat also took lessons from an artist named Ingres . Ingres didn't paint like Seurat did. But he was the praised student of Jacques-Louis David. Ingres was know for his meticulous working procedure in his works. Seurat spent his life studying color theories and the effects of different linear structures. He developed the style of painting known as Pointillism. He had 500 works of art of his own and he was proclaimed to be a master. But it isn't just the number of his works that make him an expert. His magnificent pointillist pieces in make him the famous artist that he is today. Some of his most famous paintings include: -Bathing at Asnieres -A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte Le Chahut [The link to the left provides background information on Le Chahut, for larger image of the painting click here Eden Concert Seurat was not just interested in the way that the colors were put onto the painting or the painting itself. He was mostly concentrating on the science in the picture and the optical mixing of the colors. Before actually painting the picture, he would sketch out parts of his artwork so that the models would not have to wait forever while he found the exact color.

After a year of military service at Brest, Seurat exhibited his drawing Aman-Jean at the official Salon in 1883. Panels from his painting Bathing at Asnieres were refused by the Salon the next year, so Seurat and several other artists founded the Societe des Artistes Independants. His famous canvas Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte was the centerpiece of an exhibition in 1886. By then Seurat was spending his winters in Paris, drawing and producing one large painting each year, and his summers on France's northern coast. In his short life Seurat produced seven monumental paintings, 60 smaller ones, drawings, and sketchbooks. He kept his private life very secret, and not until his sudden death in Paris on March 29, 1891, did his friends learn of his mistress, who was the model for his painting Young Woman Holding a Powder Puff.

Objectives:
Learning about the style of art known as pointillism and the artist (Georges Seurat) who created it.
Vocabulary:

What You Need:
  • paper
  • sticker dots in the primary colors
  • pen or magic marker (optional)
  • art examples (optional)
What You Do:
  • Discuss Pointillism and Georges Seurat. Artist Georges Seurat was the developer of a very scientific way of painting known as pointillism. He used tiny dots of pure color, side by side to build form in his paintings. These tiny dots of paint, when side by side, give the viewer's eye a chance to blend the color optically, rather than having the colors readily blended on the canvas. This was also known as divisionism.
  • Discuss optical color blending. Older grades/students should be ready to express how, for example, looking at the colors blue and yellow next to one another will create the illusion of color green.

Standing Model Imagine you are a painter and you create your paintings by putting tiny little dots in primary colors on a canvas. At the beginning you probably consider it quite funny, after a while you might get bored and one day it will drive you nuts. For this simple reason alone, pointillism , as this technique was called, could never become a mainstream art movement. It remained a short-lived, nice little episode in art history. Botched and doomed from the very beginning. The inventor of Pointillism and its major representative was Georges Seurat. He died very young at age 31. His dot manifesto lived only from about 1880 to 1900.

Georges Seurat was born in Paris of a comfortably situated middle-class family. He attended school in Paris until he was seventeen and then studied sculpture before being admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for the study of painting. His training was extremely academic and included a great deal of copying of such masters as Ingres at the Louvre, Seurat, however, read widely during his Beaux-Arts days and became interested in scientific theories on the uses and effects of color and light. He began to explore the aspects of light in black and white drawings in 1880, and worked steadily on this theory until 1882. By nature as much a scientist as an artist, Seurat could not accept Monet Pissarro
