1884-86; "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte"; Oil on canvas, 81 x 120 in; Signed, bottom right; Art Institute of Chicago, Helen Birch Bartlett Collection The question has been asked whether Seurat's great work should be regarded as the necessary outcome of Impressionist ideas or as deliberately anti-Impressionist, and an answer might be that it contains elements of both. In pursuing the analysis of colour, Seurat carried on, though in more systematic fashion, what Monet and Pissarro had been doing. The division of colour was scarcely new, though the primary colours were more scientifically defined by the range he based on the spectrum; but he added to this divisionism or pointillism an equally elaborate and scientifically considered treatment of line in order to attain a harmonious unity of composition, which was distinct from the Impressionist aim of suggesting light, atmosphere and movement. The difference is more readily perceptible in a figure composition as here than in landscape. The men, women and children enjoying the sun in the public park on the island of La Grande Jatte in the Seine have the sort of fixity that a moving film acquires when it comes suddenly to a halt; they are frozen in their various attitudes. As a preliminary, Seurat made a number of oil sketches on the spot in a free and indeed Impressionist style. The finished work was intentionally different. The technique used is so interesting that it is apt to gain exclusive attention. One becomes absorbed in the geometric order that Seurat has imposed on the scene and this certainly is an opposite value to that of Impressionism. Pissarro

Art Gallery About Georges Seurat S eurat, Georges , French painter, who with fellow artist Paul Signac originated neoimpressionism. Born in Paris, the son of a bailiff took drawing lessons from 1875 and later copied works in museums. In 1878/79 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and read works on color theory. After military service in 1880 he settled in Paris. In 1883 a large drawing was accepted by the Salon, and he began a large painting, an open-air scene, in the pointillist, or divisionist manner. In 1884 he met Signac and, with other likeminded artists, the Society of Independent Artists was founded to hold its own exhibitions. He rejected the irregular brushstrokes of impressionism in favor of pointillism, a technique he developed. Many artists imitated Seurat's method, but his technique remained almost unrivaled in its blending of colors. In 1884 Seurat completed Bathers at Asnières (The National Gallery, London), the first of six large canvasses that would constitute the bulk of his life's work. In 1885 he worked on the Paris Seine island Grand Jatte and in Grancamp on the coast of Normandy. He met Pissarro , who followed his style. In 1886 Seurat aroused great attention at the VIII Impressionists Exhibition with his masterpiece

The Models (large version)
1887-88; Oil on Canvas, 78 3/4 x 98 3/8 in. Signed, bottom right; The Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA. Following Bathing at Asnieres and La Grande Jatte Models is the third large picture that Seurat exhibited in public, and the second executed in his new pointillist-or "neo-impressionist"-manner. It was, until now, less famous and popular than the preceding two, only because it has been less looked at and studied, and was almost never reproduced. Nonetheless, one of the artists' most ambitious works, Models is also among the most important paintings of his career, and one of the richest in interpretive possibilities, as significant for the history of modern painting as Cézanne 's large Bathers or Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon This canvas is painted on the same monumental scale as the history paintings at the official Salon. Seurat's contemporary Arsene Alexandre wrote that it represented the young painter's attempt ``to prove that his theory, which was so well-suited to subjects en plein air , was applicable to large-scale interiors with figures''. In fact, in the context of

BY RICK DOBLE This and related pages are a listing of people, artists, thinkers etc. who have influenced my work. NOTE: Like so many of my Internet projects this is just the beginning. Over time I hope to add links to relevant sites, examples of work etc. Stay tuned. This is a listing of over 100 people and movements that have and are affecting my work. No one works out of a vacuum. We take what others have developed, combine that with our own unique ideas and ideas from still other artists, add our own twist and perspective and particular skills and viola you have artwork. The point of this listing is NOT to say that these are the best artists to the exclusion of others. These are simply the people that I became aware of and that grabbed me in such a way that they influenced my work. I am sure that there are many that I missed or did not have time for or that I didn't respond to because I was not receptive at the time. In any case my response was personal (how could it be otherwise) and heartfelt.

Georges Seurat: Precocious Genius
Article # : Section : THE ARTS Issue Date : 1,583 Words Author : Michael Gibson
The deeply secretive Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was always at pains to point out that the technical aspect of his work was the only thing that really interested him: "People see poetry in what I do. Not so! I am merely applying my method." A precocious genius, he completed his masterpiece, La Grande Jatte, at the age of twenty-five, and died of diphtheria six years later, at thirty-one.
But every artist has his peculiar procedures and strategies both unconscious and intentional, and Seurat, as the exhibition of some 230 items now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (September 9, 1991, to January 12, 1992) clearly reveals, is obviously no exception to the rule.
The visitor can safely ignore the artist's dull, competent early academic drawings, which might have been more appropriately displayed in a room apart, but one can only be dazzled and stirred by the whole sequence of dark conte crayon drawings that constituted Seurat's entire production over a period of three years, between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-four.

Seurat

He rejected the soft, irregular brushstrokes of impressionism in favor of pointillism, a technique he developed whereby solid forms are constructed by applying small, close-packed dots of unmixed color to a white background. Many artists imitated Seurat's method, but, except in the work of Signac, his technique remained unequaled in its perfect blending of colors. Seurat derived many of his theories about painting from his study of contemporary treatises on optics. His scientific bent was also evident in his work habits, which included fixed hours and the meticulous systematization of his technique. His masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-1886, Art Institute of Chicago), achieves an atmosphere of monumental dignity through the balanced arrangement of its elements and the contours of its figures. Seurat's other large-scale works are The Models (1888, Barnes Foundation Collection, Merion, Pennsylvania), The Side Show (1889, Stephen Clark Collection, New York), The Chahut (1889-1891, Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands), and The Circus (1890, Louvre, Paris).
Seurat who died at the young age of 31 was born in Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. His teacher was a disciple of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Young Seurat was strongly influenced by Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya.
