Rembrandt, the greatest of all the Baroque masters settled in Amsterdam in 1631. He took a sensuous interest and delight in the physical qualities of his medium, independence from the subject. He caked his surfaces with more paint than necessary, replaced exact imitation of form by the suggestion of it, and used a brown ground so that his paintings emerged from dark to light. He worked in complex layers, building up a picture from the back to the front with delicate glazes that allowed light to permeate his backgrounds and reflect off the white underpainting. 1653 Oil on canvas 143.5 x 136.5 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Bredius 478
Rembrandt had one foreign patron, a Sicilian nobleman, who asked him to paint a philosopher. The request came at a time when Rembrandt had become embroiled in serious financial trouble, and this commission seems to have sparked off some deep inner response. The combination of his personal anxieties and the idea of philosophy drew from Rembrandt one of his greatest masterpieces, in which he contrasts two ways of being a genius.
He ponders visually the importance in life of material success, fame, and power, compared with being true to art. He does so by confronting the greatest Greek philosopher, Aristotle, with the greatest Greek poet, Homer. In the 4th century B.C., philosophy included the whole of science, and Aristotle understood it, integrated and systemized it. He was dazzlingly successful. We see his rich, wide, silken sleeves - those of a man who does not need to work - and, above all, his thick gold chain. The chain was a gift from Aristotle's most prestigious pupil, Alexander the Great, who had left Aristotle an enormous fortune, but whom the philosopher had failed to influence spiritually.

A prolific painter, draftsman, and etcher , Rembrandt is usually regarded as the greatest artist of Holland's "Golden Age." He worked first in his native Leiden and, from 1632 onward, in Amsterdam, where he had studied briefly (ca. 1624) with the influential history painter Pieter Lastman. Rembrandt never went abroad, but he voraciously surveyed the work of Northern artists who had lived in Italy , like Lastman, the Utrecht painter Gerrit van Honthorst (Rembrandt's main link to Caravaggio Anthony van Dyck Peter Paul Rubens Saint Paul in Prison of 1627 (Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie). Even by Dutch standards, Rembrandt's preoccupation with direct observation was exceptional and continued throughout his career. Despite the constant evolution of his style, Rembrandt's compelling descriptions of light, space, atmosphere, modeling, texture, and human situations may be traced back even from his late works (such as

Born to a miller and a baker's daughter, it was said that Rembrandt van Rijn was made of "a different flour.” Despite his ambitions, he never visited Italy. After studying locally, he apprenticed with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Lastman imparted to Rembrandt his taste for religious and allegorical subjects and exposed him to Caravaggio's stylistic lessons. But the more profound aspect of Rembrandt's art, the compassion and sympathy for humanity, was Rembrandt's own, present in his sharp, early Baroque style and in his later pictorial symphonies of texture, gesture, and quiet drama. Returning to Leyden around 1624, Rembrandt worked independently and collaborated with Jan Lievensz. He painted varied subjects, including many self-portraits. Around 1631, he moved to Amsterdam, becoming its leading painter and a wealthy man. He began using canvas rather than panel, experimented with paints of different fluidities, and explored etching.

Rembrandt van Rijn
A look at the life and works of Rembrandt van Rijn and what made him one of the most famous Dutch artists. Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format: MLA Written: Author: Andy Erik
Abstract
After providing a brief overview of his life, this paper examines five works that demonstrate something of the range of his extraordinary talent and illuminate his almost preternatural ability to depict the condition of the human heart and soul - whether his own in the many self-portraits he created or in other in the series of studies that made him one of the most popular portrait artists of Amsterdam in his own time.
From The Paper
"Rembrandt himself would no doubt have been very pleased to have found out how dominant his own reputation has remained, for he was not an overly shy or modest artist. His life was in fact (especially when he was younger) defined in large measure by his ambition. He wished to be an artist whose work would in time come to rival that of other great Dutch artists such as Peter Paul Rubens. He wished not only to be a fine artist but also a famous one, and while he of course succeeded in achieving the first during his lifetime he in many ways failed to achieve the second. For while he was in demand for many years as a portrait-painter, by the end of his life he had lost many of his former patrons."

Rembrandt van Rijn
R embrandt van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a Miller who wanted his son to get an education and achieve professional success, so Rembrandt was sent to the University of Leiden, where he studied science and anatomy; it was there he gained the knowledge of the human anatomy which would serve him during his artist's career. Rembrandt wanted to paint more than anything else, so he left University to study painting under Jacob I. van Swanenburch, learning about Italian Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci , and Michelangelo Buonarroti , but he was influenced by the work of Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio, a revolutionary artist known for his unorthodox use of lighting, and the disturbingly erotic manner in he presented his subjects, even biblical figures. A while later, Rembrandt studied under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, who taught him the chiaroscuro (light and darkness) technique. Shortly thereafter, Rembrandt returns to Leiden to set up his own studio, beginning work on a series of self-portraits. What sets Rembrandt's style apart from that of Lastman's is his composition; like in the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt's background composition remains dark, while his subject is illuminated in a manner which makes the image appear nearly three dimensional.

A decade later, Rembrandt's son Titus, who is now married and living with Magdalena van Loo, but he dies of plague six months later, bringing more sadness and grief to his father, who will have outlived most of his children. Rembrandt spends some time living with his daughter-in-law, and becomes the godfather of his granddaughter Titia. Rembrandt goes on painting, remaining as prolific as ever until his own death, on October 4th, 1669. During his career, Rembrandt had been an artist and teacher, he had painted over 50 self-portraits, and a vast number of landscapes and portraits. Historians estimate there are as many as 600 of them in collections around the world. In additoin to his paintings, he has left us with thousands of etchings, and drawings. Rembrandt is viewed by many as one of the most influential artists in history, a man who was a master of shadows and light, and whose gift for rendering the soul within his subjects could never be surpassed.
