ARTISTS: A B C D ... reviews How does Raphael Saadiq make his first-ever solo album, INSTANT VINTAGE, stand out in today's ever-changing music universe? How about by inventing a whole new sound? "It's called 'gospeldelic,'" says Saadiq, the writer-producer behind such stellar hits as Angie Stone's "Brotha" and D'Angelo's "Lady" and the Grammy Award-winning "Untitled," among others. "Gospeldelic is the sound of my music, and it really means all of those things to me. I come from a gospel background, and the psychedelic, and the funkadelic it's in me.

The online gallery for Raphael Perez not only hosts his art but information on the artist which assists in understanding his art. Shading, dramatic lights and darks and the color red are a central point of the Perez style. Compositions range from wild colorful statements in abstracts or to some degree primitive form. Better yet a striking combination of the two. Subject matter include; still life, flowers, Paris, men, women, erotic art, the list is endless. Raphael Perez has definite mood and electricity to his work. Consider the image from his "Portraits" collection to the left. Perez has intensity, great emotion, and detail. A stark image conjuring many possible reasons for the emotion shown. In fact several for what the emotion is. The point here is that Perez has real feel in his works, yet enables you the visitor to establish some basis for yourself. Perez has a section on Lions. An apt subject for his style and use of bold darks and lights to create feel and continuity. In the image from his Lion collection at left the strong mood is set by all the artist has in play; color, shading, and imagery.

  • Gnossienne No. 3 (Satie) 3:33 With Angels of the Deep, Raphael has created his own sonic mythology in which the natural merges with the supernatural. In these dark waters, dreams and archetypes rise up to nourish those who yearn for inspiration in the search for creative renewal. After thirty years of composing, performing, and inspiring other people with his lush, transcendental romantic style, the Maui-based musician Raphael faced an artistic crisis. His previous releases, Music to Disappear In and Music to Disappear In II had become bestselling classics in the new age/contemporary genre.
"My harmonies were getting stuck," he recalls. With only twelve notes in an octave, I was beginning to wonder if I hadn't already worn them out." The breakthrough came in a dream: swimming with a magnificent whale, he told the creature his fears of losing his muse. "That's ridiculous," said the whale. "The possibilites of music are endless. You can never reach the end. It's like trying to calculate the last decimal of pi. It just goes on forever." On Angels of the Deep, real whales provide the impetus for Raphael's musical re-birth. The first two selections, "Angels of the Deep" and "Communion," constitute a two-part concerto for whales and synthesizers, and take a quantum leap in the use of natural ambient sounds in a musical context. Not content to merely add a few whale sounds as atmospheric background, Raphael actually derived his unusual twists of phrase from their amazingly soulful cries. Bending his synthesized sounds, the composer glides with the sinuous tones of his aquatic colleagues as his own luxurious melodies rise and fall in waves of emotion. The level of ecstasy escalates as Raphael's themes swirl through a vast sea of liquid harmonies and swim circles aorund the songs of the whales. Soon the illusion of swimming becomes synonymous with flying as the music soars with an intensity of feeling unmatched by his previous recordings.

THE liberality with which Heaven now and again unites in one
person the inexhaustible riches of its treasures and all those
graces and rare gifts which are usually shared among many
over a long period is seen in Raphael Sanzio of Urbino, who was
as excellent as gracious, and endowed with a natural modesty
and goodness sometimes seen in those who possess to an unusual
degree a humane and gentle nature adorned with affability
and good-fellowship, and he always showed himself sweet and
pleasant with persons of every degree and in all circumstances. Thus Nature created Michelagnolo Buonarroti to excel and conquer in art, but Raphael to excel in art and in manners also. Most artists have hitherto displayed something of folly and savagery, which, in addition to rendering them eccentric and fantastical, has also displayed itself in the darkness of vice and not in the splendour of those virtues which render men immortal. In Raphael, on the other hand, the rarest gifts were combined with such grace, diligence, beauty, modesty and good

    13. Deanna's World: Reflections Of The Renaissance
Underlines the creativity of the Renaissance by including artwork, literature, historical facts, and specific biographical information. Featured artists include Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and raphael.
    http://www.dworldonline.com/ren.htm
The Renaissance was an era of beautiful artwork and structures which flourished all over western Europe. Although it began in Italy where there was always a residue of classical-styled architecture, it might have been expected to appear first in Rome. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, however, Rome's political situation was very unfavorable for artistic endeavor, unlike that of Florence.
The early Renaissance in Rome was rapidly approaching the simplicity, monumentality, and massiveness of the High Renaissance of the early 16th century. It renounced the exploits of the Medieval master-mansions, and defined beauty as fidelity at the expense of all other considerations. Some of the most noted artists, architects, and sculptors of the High Renaissance include Donato Bramante, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
In essence, the Renaissance was a time period in which stunning sculptures, buildings, and artwork flourished all over western Europe. It was one of the high points of humanism and the expression of creativity and beauty of life. Raphael BACK
By 1508 Raphael was receiving offers from both the French court and the Pope; late in that year he went to Rome to take part in the grandiose decorative schemes of Pope Julius II for the new Papal apartments in the Vatican. Raphael's response to the enormous artistic challenge his part of the scheme presented is also one of those astonishing 'leaps forward' in art history and is matched, perhaps, only by Masaccio's painting of the frescoes in the Carmine church, Florence, 100 years earlier, and the exactly contemporary (1508-12) frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. When he found himself the peer and rival of Michelangelo Raphael was 26. Considered for their composition alone, The School of Athens, Parnassus and Disputa (Disputation concerning the Holy Sacrament) are probably supreme in art. They were immediately studied by every artist in Rome and remained an 'art school in themselves'.
