Any one who has the faintest idea of who Jackson Pollock was in the art world should not pass up the oppertunity to read this book. The authors explore the scaffolding of the artists ideas by opening his sketch books to viewers and revealing his bare-bone sketching style. I have yet to obtain a copy of the book, but have browsed through it's contents on numerous occaisons, each time seeing something different in every piece. An excellent book to conger up inspiration for all aspiring artist.

Jackson Pollock

The almost mythic Jackson Pollocka roughshod, ill-mannered, prodigiously ambitious, aggressive, alcoholic, tormented artistis alive and unwell in this book. But Kirk Varnedoe and Pepe Karmel, the chief curator and adjunct assistant curator, respectively, of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Painting and Sculpture, also go deeply into Pollock's art in eye-opening ways. This book is the catalog for the retrospective of Pollock's art-shattering oeuvre at the Museum of Modern Art in th...

James Coddington, Chief Conservator, The Museum of Modern Art was interviewed by Anna Hammond, Editor-in-Chief of MoMA , the Museum's magazine.
Anna Hammond: Intentionality is one of the key issues addressed in Jackson Pollock, and there's been a lot of discussion over the way Pollock workedwhether he made conscious decisions or not. You and conservator Carol Mancusi Ungaro of the Menil Collection in Houston are doing intensive research on his materials, techniques, and methods. What have you been finding?
James Coddington: I think that one of the things that's emerging with our study is that Pollock had a pretty clear notion of how his materials handled, how they worked, how they interacted with one another. And there's a level of consciousness, intention, about that that liberates him to paint as unconsciously as he does. He might be just grabbing materials that seem appropriate in the flush of the moment of creation, but he hasn't got a full universe of materials to grab. He's narrowed that universe because he knows that the materials are going to work and because he's come to know how they're going to work. So, I think that there is a great deal of consciousness, balance, use of materials, and craft, that frees him to make as apparently unconsciously as he does.
AH: That reminds me of something that Henry Adams wrote: "Chaos is the law of nature. Order is the dream of man."

It's an old saying that "everyone is a critic", but I think that statement is more applicable when it comes to art than anywhere else. Art, whether you are talking about paintings or sculpture, abstracts or impressionism, is a very personal medium. A person likes certain artists or certain styles because the work calls to them in ways that others do not. When I was younger, I had a serious thing for the works of M.C. Escher and H.R. Giger note: Giger's work is not entirely work safe, nor for the faint of heart ). The things that one person likes, another may despise (Giger being a good example).
How an artist copes with the rejection of an audience can be an interesting story in itself. That's one of the aspects of Jackson Pollock's life that Ed Harris brings to us in his directorial debut Pollock
Harris also stars in the film as Jackson Pollock. Born in 1912, Pollock first started making a name for himself in New York in the early 1930's. A follower of surrealism, he became one of the foremost abstract artists in the city. In 1941, he met Lee Krasner (played by Marcia Gay Harden), a fairly successful painter in her own right. In addition to becoming a fan of Pollock's work, she became his lover, and later his wife.
The dynamic that exists between Pollock and Krasner drives much of this film. Krasner is very much a headstrong, opinionated woman. She sees in Pollock the talent that others do not, and drives him hard to try and maintain focus, that he might be able to harness his talent completely. This proves to be more challenging than one would think, due to the fact that she also has to help him fight chronic alcoholism.

The modern artist, it seems to me, is working and expressing an inner world in other words - expressing the energy, the motion and other inner forces. It doesn't make much difference how the paint is put on as long as something has been said. Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement. When I'm painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It's only after a get acquainted period that I see what I've been about. I've no fears about making changes for the painting has a life of its own. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was an American analog to Picasso in terms of 20th century fame. Abstract expressionism does not begin to describe how he splashed paint everywhere to great effect. Pollock's career was cut short, when he died in a car crash in 1956. This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas . These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy science art music ... theatre , and cinema . We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures , as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities . The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of a Great Books Core List developed by Mortimer Adler (1902-2001) nearly 50 years ago.

Jackson Pollock's Fractals
The abstract painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is widely known for his spectacular, wall-sized paintings, which typically feature a combination of swirling drips, bright splotches, and bold, rhythmic streaks. Pollock's signature technique, which he developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, was to drip house paintin colors such as black, white, silver, taupe, and tealfrom hardened, worn-out brushes, sticks, and other applicators onto enormous sheets of canvas spread across the floor. His approach, however, was somewhat more systematic than the chaotic results might suggest. Pollock would begin by using a series of fluid strokes to draw a collection of loopy figures. When the paint dried, he would connect the scattered shapes with darker, thicker slashes of pigment. Additional layers of dripped, poured, and hurled paint would further obscure the original forms, creating a dense web of trails across the canvas. Physicist Richard P. Taylor of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, who is also trained as an artist, has taken a mathematical look at Pollock's splatter paintings to try to uncover the secret of their appeal to many viewers.

Pollock, Jackson Pollock, Jackson (1912-1956), American abstract painter, who developed a technique for applying paint by pouring or dripping it onto canvases laid on the floor. With this method Pollock produced intricate interlaced webs of paint, as in Black and White (1948, private collection). Rapid and seemingly impulsive execution like Pollock’s became a hallmark of abstract expressionism, a movement that emphasized the spontaneous gestures of the artist. Born in Cody, Wyoming, Pollock moved to New York City in 1930 to study at the Art Students League with American artist Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock’s early paintings, realistic scenes of life in America, clearly reflect Benton’s influence. As his career progressed, Pollock rejected his teacher’s representational subject matter, but retained Benton’s emphasis on rhythmic, dynamic composition. In New York, Pollock was also exposed to the work of Mexican mural painters Jos© Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Their experimental techniques, large scale, and use of industrial paints had a lasting impact on Pollock’s work.

Abstract Expressionism
However great a disaster World War II was, it did at least mean that artists such as Piet Mondrian and Max Ernst, in leaving Europe for the safety of the USA, greatly extended their artistic influence. It is impossible to estimate how much they affected American art, but the fact remains that in the 1940s and '50s, for the first time, American artists became internationally important with their new vision and new artistic vocabulary, known as Abstract Expressionism. The first public exhibitions of work by the ``New York School'' of artists who were to become known as Abstract Expressionists were held in the mid '40s. Like many other modern movements, Abstract Expressionism does not describe any one particular style, but rather a general attitude; not all the work was abstract, nor was it all expressive. What these artists did have in common were morally loaded themes, often heavyweight and tragic, on a grand scale. In contrast to the themes of social realism and regional life that characterized American art of previous decades, these artists valued, above all, individuality and spontaneous improvisation. They felt ill at ease with conventional subjects and styles, neither of which could adequately convey their new vision. In fact, style as such almost ceased to exist with the Abstract Expressionists, and they drew their inspiration from all directions. The painters who came to be called ``Abstract Expressionists'' shared a similarity of outlook rather than of style an outlook characterized by a spirit of revolt and a belief in freedom of expression. The main exponents of the genre were

For Jackson Pollock, living and painting could not be separated the famous lines of his art helped hold his life in place
by Lee Siegel
February 17, 1999

B audelaire defined genius as a child's innocent receptivity combined with the rational will of an adult. If you think of color as innocence and line as experience, then you might say that painting enacts a primal struggle for creative harmony. The formulation might sound simplistic and abstract, but I think it helps in understanding the work of Jackson Pollock, the subject of a recent retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which is now moving on to London's Tate Gallery.
The mainstream development of Western painting, beginning in the Renaissance, tended toward forms that slowly became simpler and more abstract. By the late 1940s in the United States, in certain studios scattered around New York, painting had become absolutely simplistic simplistic seeming, anyway and abstract. Jackson Pollock's art represents, to my mind, the consummation of this trend, but not only that. His painting and his way of painting (not his tragic life!) represent an ideal way of living. And this has its roots in surrealist art.
