Monet Art Prints
Claude Monet was a central member of one of the best-loved art movements of all times, Impressionism
When Monet's painting, Impression, Sunrise , was first presented at the prestigious Salon in Paris, reviewers used the title to mock the new painting movement and gave the name "Impressionists" to Monet and other exhibitors such as Renoir and Degas
Claude Monet was, along with the other Impressionists, a passionate individualist who embraced the concept of plein-air painting (finishing entire works of art out-of-doors rather than in the studio). His goal in art was to approach the natural world with an innocent eye and to record his "impressions".
Monet experienced a new level of reality by painting this way and felt that this form of art was capable of transforming the viewer.

Monet, Claude: Houses of Parliament, London
Of Monet's and Pissarro 's experience of England during the Franco-German war, Pissarro was later to write, `Monet and I were very enthusiastic over the London landscapes'. However, they chose different aspects of it: Pissarro, what he described as `at that time a charming suburb' (Lower Norwood) and Monet, Hyde Park and Westminster. Monet's paintings of Hyde Park in 1871, though nothing more than stretches of grass and pathways with an indication of strolling figures are remarkably true to character though the principal product of his stay in London was the beautiful view of Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament, dated 1871. The suggestion of color in the fog-laden sky is certainly Impressionist but the silhouette of the Parliament buildings does not suggest any debt to Turner , whose works the two French artists now saw. Monet observed and made use of the same flattening result of the heavy atmosphere as Whistler , whose Nocturnes belong to the same decade. The resemblance, fortuitous as it may be, is increased rather than otherwise by the evidently well-considered relation of the foreground timber pier and the buildings and bridge behind, a reminder that Monet like Whistler was an admirer of the Japanese prints in which these decorative relationships had a studied importance. Monet was to come nearer to Turner in the later more vividly chromatic paintings of the Thames at Westminster made on his later visits in the first decade of the twentieth century.

1869 (150 Kb); Oil on white primed canvas, 73 x 92 cm (28 3/4 x 36 1/4 in) La Grenouillère (`The Froggery') was a restaurant and bathing place on a small branch of the Seine at Croissy. It was an extremely popular area because the Railway line from Paris to Saint-Germain, the first to be opened in France, had a station at nearby Chatou. Both Monet and Renoir painted several views of it in 1869 (Monet: La Grenouillère , Metropolitan Museum, New York; Renoir: La Grenouillère , Oskar Reinhardt Collection, Winterthur, Switzerland). Several successful academic painters had houses nearby, and the place was extensively written about, sometimes approvingly, sometimes not so, during the 1860s. It was thought of as a very `contemporary' subject, and its popularity was confirmed in the year that Monet and Renoir painted it, when it was visited by the Emperor Napoleon III and Eugénie, his wife. (detail, 210 Kb)
La Grenouillère was a riverside bathing and boating resort, popular among weekend trippers during the Second Empire (1852-1870) and after. It had a floating restaurant which is seen in another of the paintings executed by Monet during his two-month stay there in the late summer of 1869, and it appears in similar works by Renoir often painted sitting alongside Monet. The resort was situated on the Ile de Croissy, facing the left bank of the Seine.

for the art lover CLAUDE MONET
Though Edouard Manet may be considered the father of impressionism, it is Claude Monet who's name is synonymous with the style. Although his work showed great diversity and genius, he never wavered from ideals of the impressionistic design. In fact the name "impressionism" came from one of his paintings, Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872) Monet was born and grew up in Le Havre, on the coast of France. His first art was in the form of caricature, but he then switched to landscapes by his early mentor and teacher Eugene Boudin. From this teaching, Monet derived his lifelong tendency to paint out of doors, thus capturing the lights and shadows that defined his work. In 1859, he moved to Paris to study at the Atelier Suisse and while there, formed a friendship with Camille Pissarro, starting a trend for him to befriend some of the great contemporary painters of his day. He learned much from these associations and it reflected in his work. His life also revolved around war as he joined the military and was stationed in Algiers. Later during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 to 1871, he had to take refuge in England to continue his work. Monet was given to extremes in his methods of achieving the exact effects in his paintings that he wished to express. It is said that once when creating a landscape, he would not paint even the leaves in the background unless the outside light had turned to his exact specifications. In another story concerning one of his earlier works, Women in the Garden (Musée d'Orsay, Paris; 1866-67). The painting stands about ten and half feet high and to enable him to paint all of it outside he had workers dig a trench in the garden so that the canvas could be raised or lowered by pulleys to the height he required.

Monet, Claude [kl O A Pronunciation Key Monet, Claude , French landscape painter, b. Paris. Monet was a founder of impressionism . He adhered to its principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative painter of the school as well as one of the foremost painters of landscape in the history of art. As a youth in Le Havre, Monet was encouraged by the marine painter Boudin Monet soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of light and atmosphere brought on by changes of hour and season. Rather than copy in the Louvre, the traditional practice of young artists, Monet learned from his friends, from the landscape itself, and from the works of his older contemporaries Manet, Corot, and Courbet. Monet's representation of light was based on his knowledge of the laws of optics as well as his own observations of his subjects. He often showed natural color by breaking it down into its different components as a prism does. Eliminating black and gray from his palette, Monet rejected entirely the academic approach to landscape. In 1874 Sisley, Morisot, and Monet organized the first impressionist group show, which was ferociously maligned by the critics, who coined the term

Five years later his family moved to Le Havre where, subsequently, his adolescent caricatures were exhibited next to the work of his future mentor Eugène Boudin (1824-1897). The elder artist encouraged Monet to paint directly from nature: “It was as if a veil had suddenly been torn from my eyes. I understood. I grasped what painting was capable of being”. Monet studied for one year at the Académie Suisse in Paris before he was posted on a year’s military service in Algeria. He would later place great emphasis on this time spent abroad, “I did not realise it at first; it was not until later that the impressions of colour and light which I had received sorted themselves out; but the germ of my future research was there.” During the 1860s Monet had already begun to use ideas that were to become his trademarks; painting directly from nature and using quick brush stokes to record overall effect rather than detail. These paintings were often partly contrived: in Women in the Garden (1866) Monet’s mistress Camille posed for all four figures and Monet would often also finish canvases in his studio. However, it was this painting that began to identify him as the leader of an emerging school of painters referred to as ‘Actualists’ by Emile Zola.
