In 1859 he studied in Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with the painter Pissarro. After two years' military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met Jongkind. He then, in 1862, entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris and there met Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille, with whom he was to form the nucleus of the Impressionist group. Monet's devotion to painting out of doors is illustrated by the famous story concerning one of his most ambitious early works, (Women in the Garden, Paris - 1867). The picture is about 2.5 meters high and to enable him to paint all of it outside he had a trench dug in the garden so that the canvas could be raised or lowered by pulleys to the height he required. Courbet visited him when he was working on it and said Monet would not paint even the leaves in the background unless the lighting conditions were exactly right.

Monet, Claude [kl O A Pronunciation Key Monet, Claude , French landscape painter, b. Paris. Monet was a founder of impressionism . He adhered to its principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative painter of the school as well as one of the foremost painters of landscape in the history of art. As a youth in Le Havre, Monet was encouraged by the marine painter Boudin Monet soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of light and atmosphere brought on by changes of hour and season. Rather than copy in the Louvre, the traditional practice of young artists, Monet learned from his friends, from the landscape itself, and from the works of his older contemporaries Manet, Corot, and Courbet. Monet's representation of light was based on his knowledge of the laws of optics as well as his own observations of his subjects. He often showed natural color by breaking it down into its different components as a prism does. Eliminating black and gray from his palette, Monet rejected entirely the academic approach to landscape. In 1874 Sisley, Morisot, and Monet organized the first impressionist group show, which was ferociously maligned by the critics, who coined the term

Monet, with Pissaro , is recognized as being one of the creators of Impressionism, and he was the most convinced and consistent Impressionist of them all. From his earliest days as an artist, he was encouraged to trust his perceptions and the hardships he suffered never deterred him from that pursuit. Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840 but all his impressions as a child and adolescent were linked with Le Havre, the town to which his family moved about 1845. His father had a grocery store there. In his youth he painted caricature portraits and exhibited them in the art supplies store in which Pissarro and . Later, in 1862, he entered the Atelier Gleyre, where he met Bazille Renoir and Sisley Edouard Manet
An important turning point in Monet’s artistic career came in 1869, when he and Renoir painted La Grenouillere , a floating restaurant at Bougival. The canvases they produced marked the emergence of a new artistic movement, Impressionism, called so later.

Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre in the Garden Claude Monet was one of the founding fathers of French Impressionism. Monet's concern was to reflect the influence of light on a subject. He never abandoned his Impressionist painting style until his death in 1926 when Fauvism and Cubism were en vogue and when abstract painting came into existence.
    First Painting Lessons
Claude Monet was born in Paris, but grew up in Le Havre. His first artistic output were caricatures when he was a little boy. Close to his home was a little shop owned by a marine painter, Mr. Eugene Boudin. He recognized the talent of the boy and gave him his first painting lessons. Claude's family was not very happy about his vocation for painting. In 1860 he was drafted and had to go to Northern Africa for two years. After his return from Africa he went to Paris and took painting lessons at Gleyre's studio in Paris. At the studio he got to know

Artist Claude Monet is best known for his remarkable accomplishments as an Impressionist painter. In his works, Monet focused on capturing the fleeting and ephemeral effects of light on objects. And the result is spectacular - today, Monet is widely admired, his paintings appreciated for their subtle colors and innovative painterly technique. Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France. He began his career as an artist just after the middle of the Nineteenth century, at a time when the French art world was dominated by conservative and traditional painters. Monet rejected the slick Academic style and subject matter so admired by the art connoisseurs of the day, and instead chose to depict scenes from nature and contemporary life. A field of poppies. Haystacks. A water lily pond. The façade of Rouen Cathedral. These were the images that inspired Monet, and he painted them almost obsessively. And whether he painted landscapes, boats on the water, or flowers, his paintings reveal that Monet was a master of portraying the elusive play of light and shadow in his magnificent works. Viewers can see this artistic mastery in some of Monet's most memorable and famous paintings, such as his images of Water Lilies and Haystacks in the Snow More about the art and life of Claude Monet

He rejected the conventions of high finish and tonal colour to complete pictures out of doors and directly in front of the subject. His rapid technique, luminous palette and attempts to capture fleeting weather conditions were at first condemned by critics. Later however, Monet was hailed as a master in the painterly tradition of French art. Read the BBCi Arts profile. Thames below Westminster , c.1871 Haystacks, Snow Effect Monet: did you know? "Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you," advised Claude Monet. He was a successful caricaturist in his native Le Havre, but after studying plein-air landscape painting, he moved to Paris in 1859. He soon met future Impressionists Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir and Monet began painting outdoors together in the late 1860s, laying the foundations of Impressionism. In 1874, with Pissarro and Edgar Degas, Monet helped organize the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, etc., the formal name of the Impressionists' group. During the 1870s Monet developed his technique for rendering atmospheric outdoor light, using broken, rhythmic brushwork. He received little but abuse from public and critics alike, who complained that the paintings were formless, unfinished, and ugly. He and his family endured abject poverty. By the 1880s, however, his paintings started selling; Pissarro accused him of commercialism, and younger painters called him passé, for he remained loyal to the Impressionists' early goal of capturing the transitory effects of nature through direct observation. In 1890 he began creating paintings in series, depicting the same subject under various conditions and at different times of the day. His late pictures, made when he was half-blind, are shimmering pools of color almost totally devoid of form.
