The second of five sons to Ludovico di Buonaorotto Simoni, he was born in 1475 in the nearby village of Caprese but always considered himself a "son of Florence." Today, one need not look long or hard to witness Michelangelo's influence on the city. His tomb is displayed prominently alongside those of Machiavelli, Galileo, and Rossini, and many of his most famous works of sculpture are housed throughout Florence - including, the magnificent statue of David. Michelangelo was actually born outside the city boundaries, and he spent many of his youngest years with a wet nurse in a family of stonecutters. His childhood among this hard-working stonecutter family was lacking in affection. Michelangelo essentially grew up without a maternal influence, for his mother was too sick to nurse him and died when he was only six. His stepmother did provide for him but was generally too occupied with running the household to exert a tender influence on the young boy. Still, Michelangelo found his own inspiration in the skilled craftsmanship of the stonecutters. It was in the stone quarries of his youth that Michelangelo began his life-long loving relationship with stone - marble in particular. Michelangelo shared that love for stone with all of Tuscany: Irving Stone, author of the famous biography of Michelangelo

Michelangelo BUONAROTI
Painter, Sculptor and Architect of Florence
WHILE industrious and choice spirits, aided by the light afforded by
Giotto and his followers, strove to show the world the talent with
which their happy stars and well-balanced humours had endowed them,
and endeavoured to attain to the height of knowledge by imitating the
greatness of Nature in all things, the great Ruler of Heaven looked
down and, seeing these vain and fruitless efforts and the presumptuous
opinion of man more removed from truth than light from darkness,
resolyed, in order to rid him of these errors, to send to earth a
genius universal in each art, to show single-handed the perfection of line and shadow, and who should give relief to his paintings, show a sound judgment in sculpture, and in architecture should render habitations convenient, safe, healthy, pleasant, well-pro- portioned, and enriched with various ornaments. He further endowed him with true moral philosophy and a sweet poetic spirit, so that the world should marvel at the singular eminence of his life and works and all his actions, seeming rather divine than earthy.

Artists Michelangelo Buonarroti Born 1475, Died 1564
Painter, Draftsman, Sculptor, Architect
Italian
[T]he benign ruler of heaven graciously looked down to earth, saw the worthlessness of what was being done, . . . [and] decided to send into the world an artist [Michelangelo Buonarroti] … whose work alone would teach us how to attain perfection. Thus biographer Giorgio Vasari described Michelangelo—sculptor, painter, draftsman, architect, and poet, and Italy's most famous artist. More than anyone, Michelangelo elevated the status of the artist above the level of craftsman. His deeply felt religious convictions were manifested in his art. For him, the body was the soul's prison. By using movement, monumental forms, and gesture to express spiritual urges, he opened up new artistic vistas in the direction of Mannerism and the Baroque. Overcoming parental opposition, Michelangelo apprenticed with Florence's best fresco painter, Domenico Ghirlandaio, while greatly admiring the work of Donatello. He studied

Biography on Michelangelo, the artist
Learn about the life and work of one of the greatest painters and sculptors of all time, Michelangelo.
Like the rock stars of today, painter and sculptor Michelangelo is known by his first name only. He was born Michelangelo Buonarroti in March of 1475 in the small village of Caprese. His father was a Florentine official with ties to the ruling Medici family. Michelangelo's artist's legacy leaves us in awe, centuries after his death, and many consider him to be the greatest artist that ever lived. By the youthful age of 15, Michelangelo was a prodigy, a favorite of Florence's leading citizen, Lorenzo de Medici. After serving his appreticeship, he became disillusioned with book learning and set out to study nature firsthand. He had a quick mind and curiosity, but he applied them to only one thing, the human body. Mastering the techniques of the ancient Greeks and Romans, it's said he dissected corpses to learn anatomy. Although dissection was illegal, Michelangelo felt it was the key to understanding the body and portraying it realistically. bodyOffer(29431) There were many sides to his man. Throughout his life, Michelangelo's numerous talents were in great demand. Popes and Princes vied to commission him to paint, sculpt, or design churches and monuments. He struggled to remain independent of his patrons' demands. For the most part, he did what he wanted, when he wanted. Remarkably, his patrons put up with this behavior.

Greco, El
Early Work in Venice and Rome El Greco was anxious to be given the commission to fresco the walls of the newly built royal monastery-palace of El Escorial near Madrid, completed in 1582. He submitted several paintings to King Philip II for approval but was denied the commission. One of these, The Triumph of the Holy League (1578?-1579?, versions in El Escorial and in the National Gallery, London), proves his ability to combine complex political iconography with medieval motifs. El Greco also worked for Toledo Cathedral: The Disrobing of Christ (1577-1579) for the sacristy presents a splendid image of Christ in a rich red garment, closely surrounded by his captors. The work caused the first of several lawsuits brought by the artist against his patrons, who objected to its high price. Emergence As a Spanish Master Later Paintings feverish intensity can be sensed in many of El Greco's canvases dating from the 1590s until the time of his death. Baptism of Christ (signed in Greek, as was the artist's custom, 1596?-1600?) and Adoration of the Shepherds (1612-1614), both in the Prado, seem to pulsate with an eerie light generated by the holy figures themselves. In addition, the Adoration figures are enveloped by a steamy haze, observable in other late works, which intensifies the mystical nature of the event. Subjects of classical mythology, such as the Laocoon (1610?-1614?, National Gallery, Washington, D.C.), and Old Testament history, such as the unfinished apocalyptic scene Opening of the Fifth Seal (1608?-1614?, Metropolitan Museum), attest to El Greco's humanistic learning and his brilliantly personal and novel approach to traditional themes. El Greco died in Toledo on April 7, 1614, and he was buried there in Santo Domingo el Antiguo.

Vernon Howard SuperWisdom
Vernon Howard The Brilliant Lesson of Michelangelo By: Thomas H. Russell The artist Michelangelo often stirred up the hatred of the contemporary artists of his day. Many of them envied his magnificent abilities. One example was the architect Bramante.
Pope Julius retained Michelangelo to build his tomb. Michelangelo spent eight months in a marble pit personally cutting and selecting perfect stones. When he returned, he found the pope had second thoughts.
Bramante had convinced the pope that building the tomb before his death was a risky thing to do. Out of spite, Bramante turned Pope Julius against the project. It was cancelled.
Later the idea for another special project entered the pope's mind. Bramante saw the project as a time consuming trap for which there would be little public recognition. Bramante recommended Michelangelo for the job. The great artist saw the trap. He knew what Bramante was up to. He wished to turn the project down but did not want to refuse the pope's request. So Michelangelo went to work. He spent many years doing the slow and tedious labor the project required.
It was the Sistine Chapel.
