Michelangelo began work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture (standing at 4.34m/14 ft 3 in tall) was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. The choice of David was supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence and was under constant attack from supporters of the usurped Medicis. In the 19th century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
Michelangelo: a dominant force in Florence and Rome
Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564) exerted enormous influence. He, too, was universally acknowledged as a supreme artist in his own lifetime, but again, his followers all too often present us with only the master's outward manner, his muscularity and gigantic grandeur; they miss the inspiration. Sebastiano del Piombo (c.1485-1547), for example, actually used a drawing (at least a sketch) made for him by Michelangelo for his masterwork, The Raising of Lazarus . Masterwork it is; yet how melodramatic it appears if compared with Michelangelo's own painting.

Michelangelo (Getting to Know the Worlds Greatest Artists) > Customer Review #1: A basic introduction to the life and art of Michelagnelo

I have read enough volumes in Mike Venezias "Getting to Know the Worlds Greatest Artists" series to know that the best volumes are those that combine biography with elementary art appreciation. Unfortunately, in this volume on Michelangelo the emphasis is almost entirely on the former. This might have something to do with the fact that the subject this time around was both a painter and a sculptor (not to mention architect), but for the most part Venezia labels these statues and paintings as great art without giving us an idea of how Michelangelo worked his magic (the exception that proves the point is when he talks about how the sculptor left chisel marks to create an effect when viewed from a distance). Several of Michelangelos most famous statues (David, Moses, the Pieta, etc.) are shown as is the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (along with some closer views). Those who have seen the film "The Agony and the Ecstasy" will love Venezias cartoon reflecting the tensions between the artist and Pope Julius II. Young readers will have to look elsewhere to find out more about the technique of Michelangelo (e.g., how he was different from his contemporaries in that he worked from the front of a piece of marble on a statue rather than attacking it from all sides), but this book will certainly introduce him to the statues and paintings that made him famous. Note: although Venezia talks about the restoration of the paintings in the Sistine Chapel, the photographs are taken prior to that monumental accomplishment.

by Anthony Parente The Pieta , which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son Jesus Christ after his death, has been created in many different forms by various painters and sculpture. Of all the great paintings and sculptures on the Pieta the one by Michelangelo stands out from all the rest. Michelangelo was relatively unknown to the world as an artist. He was only in his early twenties when he was commissioned in 1498 to do a life size sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding her son in her arms. It would be the first of four that he would create and the only one he completely finished. It was to be unveiled in St. Peter's Basilica for the Jubilee of 1500. In less than two years Michelangelo carved from a single slab of marble, the most magnificent sculpture ever created. His interpretation of the Pieta was far different than ones created previously by other artists. Michelangelo decided to create a youthful, serene and celestial Virgin Mary instead of a broken hearted and somewhat older woman.

Florentine sculptor, painter, poet and architect. Michelangelo was born at Caprese where his father was the chief Florentine official. He was trained in Florence, first in the technique of fresco painting by D. Ghirlandaio; then under the patronage of Lorenzo the Magnificent, in the Medici school. Here he became a sculptor. Here too, his mind was formed by the companionship of the Neo-platonic philosophers, artists, poets and men of letters Lorenzo had drawn to his household. Michelangelo's own genius was recognized and encouraged from the beginning.
Michelangelo carved the large marble David for the city of Florence along with other works of this period are the Bruges Madonna, the painting of the Holy Family, and the large cartoon or design for a fresco, The Battle of Cascina, done in competition with Leonardo Michelangelo. This important work was destroyed, but not before the studies of the nude in violent action had influenced many artists in a way that led ultimately to the style of Mannerism. In 1508, Michelangelo was assigned the job of decorating the whole of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with frescoes. This enormous undertaking took him over 4 years, working virtually single-handed. He was recalled to Rome in 1534 to paint his 2nd great fresco, The Last Judgement, which covers the whole area of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel.

Michelangelo is certainly the most representative artist of the XVI century: a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. He lived to a great age, and enjoyed great fame in his lifetime. Titian , and Venetian painting generally, was very much influenced by his vision, and he is responsible in large measure for the development of Mannerism. Michelangelo di Ludovico di Lionardo di Buonarroti Simoni was born in 1475; at Caprese, in Casentino. His family Buonarroti Simoni, are mentioned in the Florentine chronicles as early as the XII century. In 1488, at the age of 13, he entered the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio . Thus he came under the influence of Masaccio , because his teacher, Ghirlandaio, not only looked to Masaccio for ideas on religious scenes, but actually imitated certain elements of his designs. After less than a year he moved to the academy set up by Lorenzo the Magnificent. From 1489 till 1492, he lived in the Palazzo Medici in Via Larga, where he could study “antique and good statues” and could meet the sophisticated humanists and writers of the Medici circle.
Lorenzo the Magnificent died in 1492, and in 1494 the Medici were expelled from Florence. After the brief rule of the priest

He is one of the greatest artists of all time, a man whose name has become synonymous with the word "masterpiece": Michelangelo Buonarroti. As an artist he was unmatched, the creator of works of sublime beauty that express the full breadth of the human condition. Yet in a world where art flourished only with patronage, Michelangelo was caught between the conflicting powers and whims of the Medici family in Florence, and the Papacy in Rome. Unlike many artists of his time, his genius was recognized, but at what cost to his personal life? His Birth
The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, at Caprese, in Tuscany, to Ludovico di Leonardo di Buonarotto Simoni and Francesca Neri . The same day, his father noted down: "Today March 6, 1475, a child of the male sex has been born to me and I have named him Michelangelo. He was born on Monday between 4 and 5 in the morning, at Caprese, where I am the Podestà." Although born in the small village of Caprese, Michelangelo always considered himself a "son of Florence," as did his father, "a Citizen of Florence."

Following the High's presentation, the exhibition will travel to only one other U.S. venue, the Toledo Museum of Art in September 2001. The exhibition will contain many works by Italy's most famous artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), that have never before been displayed in this country alongside works by other artists and memorabilia from the artist's family home, Casa Buonarroti, in Florence, Italy. The High's presentation will triple the number of works of art in the United States by Michelangelo. By most counts there are less than a dozen drawings by Michelangelo in American collections and no paintings or sculpture. Now two dozen superb sketches and preparatory studies for such important works as the Sistine Chapel and the Medici Tombs will travel to Atlanta's High Museum of Art. Michelangelo: Drawings and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti , Florence is organized by the High Museum of Art in conjunction with the Casa Buonarroti, Florence.

an essay on michelangelo
Posted by simar on September 08, 1999 at 07:58:24: Michelangelo was one of the best known artists in the 16th century. He lived during 1475 to 1564 and was one of the most famous artists in history. The works of Michelangelo cover the sculptures he made, the beautiful paintings he drew, and the occasional tombs he architecture. The great works of Michelangelo like the paintings at the Satine Chapel and the statue of David can still be seen and admired. Though the world today sees only the artist side of the last giant of the renaissance period, the sad part of the story is the artist's personal life. The following draft deals with the works and life of Michelangelo and the effects of society on him as well as what made him draw or make these vastly popularised pieces of art. On the 18th of October 1564, the last giant of the renaissance period departed from the earth. During his life Michelangelo played different roles of being one of the best sculpturist, a highly successful painter, a good architect and an occasional poet. His life has been the one full of arts. His desire to create things out of stone made him carve out pieces till the end of his life. If it hadn't been a lonely and sad personal life for him, his life could easily be stated as the complete life of all. In the end, Michelangelo will always be remembered for the great works he left for us to see and admire.
