Matisse, Henri Emile Benoit (1869-1954), French artist, leader of the Fauve group, regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art, a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression. Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambresis in northern France on December 31, 1869. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawings and works in several graphic media, reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Unlike many artists, he was internationally popular during his lifetime, enjoying the favor of collectors, art critics, and the younger generation of artists. Matisse died in Nice on November 3, 1954.

Find Artist: Henri Matisse, often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. Matisse's artistic career was long and varied, covering many different styles of painting from Impressionism to near Abstraction. Early on in his career Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist, and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Here he concentrated on reflecting the sensual color of his surroundings and completed some of his most exciting paintings. In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed as having duodenal cancer and was permanently confined to a wheelchair. It was in this condition that he completed the magnificent Chapel of the Rosary in Vence.

Henri Matisse In the monumental Bathers by a River,French artist Henri Matisse chose a traditional subject, the nude in a natural setting, and reinterpreted it in a totally contemporary way. The figures have been radically simplified, their forms defined in heavy, bold outlines; the background and river have become a series of vertical bands, the foliage a patterned field of arclike shapes. The flattened space and muted colors indicate Matisse's awareness of Cubism, while the curved, sensuous lines and strong color contrasts reveal his highly personal, expressive vision.

Worcester Collection, 1953.158 View enlargement During his long career, Henri Matisse worked in varied media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage . Matisse's art diverged from the Cubist style in his freer use of color and greater attention to the decorative effects of line and pattern. A leader of Fauvism , a movement that relied on the exaggerated, non- naturalistic use of color, Matisse later began to exhibit a more austere style closer to Cubism. Bathers by the River, a work completed in several stages between 1909 and 1916, is a supreme example of this phase in Matisse's art. It is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The painting began as one of three panels commissioned for the residence of a Moscow collector. The first version was a stylized rendering of a pastoral scene showing five nude females near a waterfall. After the collector decided not to purchase that
