AN ABRIDGED HISTORY OF EUROPE
by William M. Brinton
Henri Matisse
While he was regarded as a leader of radicalism in the arts, Matisse was beginning to gain the approval of a number of influential critics and collectors, including the American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein and her family. Among the many important commissions he received was that of a Russian collector who requested mural panels illustrating dance and music (both completed in 1911; now in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg). Such broadly conceived themes ideally suited Matisse; they allowed him freedom of invention and play of form and expression. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawings and works in several graphic media, reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated, Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in the production of a work of art. He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the play of the forces of color and design, and he explained the rhythmic, but distorted, forms of many of his figures in terms of the working out of a total pictorial harmony.

Goldfish
by Henri Matisse La Danse by Henri Matisse Henri Matisse , a French painter, was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Matisse was the leader of the Fauves, a group of painters who started the first important art movement of the era. Matisse, one of the rare artists to achieve worldwide recognition during his lifetime, was considered a master of the use of color and form to convey emotional expression. Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of Africa, the bright colors of the French Impressionists , and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the Cubists.

Henri Matisse Fauvism and Beyond Laurel Graydon Computer Literacy Fall 1999 Table of Contents Henri Matisse Henri Matisse was one of the best artists of the modern era. He was a French artist born in 1869. Matisse used many different mediums of art, such as painting, sculpting, and lithography throughout his career as an artist. He was often compared to Picasso, and seen as one of the best artists of his time. His works never gave off the feeling of loneliness. They always uplifting, positive images, and though he lived through some of the most traumatic political events in history, his works were always comforting. Matisse was meticulous in creating his art, and though he wanted it to be perfect, he often experimented with many different mediums to achieve the look he wanted. He experimented with all of these mediums and some of his works were very unique and have become some of the most famous works of art in history, such as The Goldfish , and these paintings of his began to symbolize what modernism was. Matisse enjoyed looking into these different areas of art, and it allowed him to be different and creative with what he did. His style of painting, throughout the years, changed with the times and he experimented with these different styles so that he could find out what he really enjoyed, and what he felt expressed his feeling best. But he was known, also, as one of the leaders of Fauvism. Fauvism was a style of painting in France from 1898 until 1908. It used bright intense colors to create the sensation of an explosion upon the canvas. He always used color in bold patterns, using distinct colors that contrasted and blended nicely, to create unique works of art. He also used many different sorts of expressive abstraction, for example in

    Henri Matisse Biography 1869-1954
The Joy of Life (c) VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2001/2002 Henri Matisse was born as the son of a grain merchant in the Picardy region of northern France. He studied law and worked as a law clerk. When Henri Matisse was 21 years old he became seriously ill. During the phase of convalescence Matisse started painting and discovered his love for art, which should become his life-long passion. Two years later, in 1892, he gave up his career as a lawyer. He attended art classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and dabbled in different styles. He then was influenced by the impressionist and post-impressionist painters Pisarro, Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and Paul Signac and by the paintings of W. Turner. Around the year 1905 he finally found his own style characterized by daring, bright colors executed in a broad brush stroke.

"It is not possible for me to copy nature in a servile way; I am forced to interpret nature and submit it to the spirit of the picture. From the relationships I have found in all the tones there must result a living harmony of colors, a harmony analogous to that of a music composition."

"My choice of colors does not rest on any scientific theory; it is based on observation, on feeling, on the experience of my sensibility. Inspired by certain pages of Delacroix, an artist like Signac is preoccupied with complementary colors, and the theoretical knowledge of them will lead him to use a certain tone in a certain place. But I simply try to put down colors which render my sensation." "What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, an art that could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair that provides relaxation from fatigue."

    Who is Henri Matisse?
Henri Matisse was considered one of the 20th centuries most influential modernist artists whom Paris critics dubbed the King of Fauves.
His determined quest to infuse his paintings with vibrant and sun-drenched colours and to explore new ways of interpreting shapes, images and mediums, garnered Henri Matisse the distinction of becoming one of the most influential artists of his time. He and a small group of fellow artists that included Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain shocked the austere Paris art world with their radical ideas and what most art aficionados considered was their total lack of discipline. But Matisse persisted. In turn Paris art critics christened his small group the fauves, or the wild beasts of the early 20th century art movement. Fauvism, though short-lived, opened the floodgates for modernist artists to express their own visions and paved the way for other forms of modern expressionism like cubism. Henri Emile Benoit Matisse was born in 1869 in the northern French region of Picardy. The eldest of 3 sons, he was a sickly child and suffered from what doctors diagnosed as chronic appendicitis. Anna Heloise Gerard, descendant of a long line of well-to-do tanners, doted on and over-protected her son. She also showed an artistic bent and it was from her that Henri acquired his love of shapes, textures and vibrant colours. She was the first to advise her son not to adhere to the rules of art, but rather listen to his emotions. bodyOffer(30959)
