HENRI MATISSE 1869 - 1954 Henri Matisse was born in the north of France at Le Cateau-Cambresis in 1869. It was not until he was 21 years old that he became interested in painting as a career. In 1891, Matisse began studying at the Acad, mie Julian under Bouguereau. In 1892, he transferred to Gustave Moreau's studio at the cole des Beaux-Arts. His first successful show was made in 1896 at the Salon de la Societ, Nationale des Beauz Arts. Matisse was largely influenced by the impressionist artists who preceded him, but it was not until 1902 that his own style was fully developed. In 1905 and 1906, Matisse painted with Marquet in Paris. One of his most-celebrated works of that period is "Open Window, Collioure" which employed Impressionistic pastel colors and caught a glimpse of the surroundings outside his window. After his time spent with Marquet, Matisse's style reached its peak. Matisse headed the then newly found art movement called Fauvism. His works abandoned the use of light colors; instead, he used darker, richer hues which resulted in grand-scale works of art, all in a decorative style. Matisse's journeys took him to places such as Munich, Seville, Moscow and Tangiers between the years of 1910 and 1914. After this time, he lived in Coullioure, Paris and Nice. Finally, in 1918, an exhibition featuring the works of Matisse, as well as Picasso, opened at the Guillaume Gallery.

Matisse was a nervous man and he coaxed his anxiety into serenity through painting. In his later years, while bed ridden, Henri Matisse became well known for his abstract works made of cutouts in coloured paper mixed with gouache and crayons.
Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau in Picardy, France. In 1891 he abandoned a legal career to study under Bouguereau and Moreau. Here, he painted still lifes and landscapes in a sober range of colours.
Henri Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. His visionary experiments into different styles of painting - from his impressionistic domestic and figurative subjects to his abstract cutouts - changed our perception of the world.

Henri Matisse (Getting to Know the Worlds Greatest Artists) > Customer Review #1: Mike Venezia introduces kids to art of Henri Matisse

Mike Venezia begins his look at Henri Matisse with the assertion that this was one of the most important painters of the 20th century. However, after having read this volume in the Getting to Know the Worlds Greatest Artists series I am not sure why this would be the case. If it is because Matisse wanted artwork to give people pleasure or because of his striking use of colors, then the problem is simply that the case is not made explicitly. Usually when an artist is important you can point to the impact he had on others, but that is not the argument being made here. I raise this issue, not because I have been grading papers all week and been constantly harping on the difference between arguing and asserting, but because I had been reading every one of Venezias books I can get my hands on as part of my do-it-yourself art appreciation course. I want to know who was important and why.

CONTEXT FOR THE CREATION OF JAZZ
"My curves are not crazy." - Henri Matisse, Jazz
In 1943, while convalescing from a serious operation, Henri Matisse began work on a set of collages to illustrate an, as yet, untitled and undecided text. This suite of twenty images, translated into "prints" by the stenciling of gouache paint, became known as Jazz-considered one of his most ambitious and important series of work. The years of World War II were a difficult time for Matisse and his family. He had separated from his wife Amelie in 1940 when he moved to the south of France. His wife and his daughter Marguerite were each tried and then jailed by the Gestapo for their parts in the French Resistance movement. Marguerite was tortured and then deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp but was miraculously rescued before arriving there. The artist's two sons, Pierre and Jean were living in New York and Paris, respectively, and communication with them was intermittent at best during the war years. Jean, a sculptor, was also a Resistance fighter, training soldiers in marksmanship in his studio. Matisse himself was recovering from a bout of intestinal cancer and, unable to stand, spent great periods of time in bed. After a risky operation, Matisse remarked to his friend Albert Marquet in 1942, "Truly, I'm not joking when I thank my lucky stars for the awful operation I had, since it has made me young again and philosophical which means that I don't want to fritter away the new lease on life I've been given." It seems clear that, despite the illnesses, the change in direction in Matisse's work was already under way. This was, in fact the only period of his life when all of his various media were at play toward the same goals. Still, despite his optimism, there was pain and difficulty ahead of him as he was forced to wear a metal corset for weeks at a time. Further, he was plagued by gallstones, liver problems, deteriorating vision and, worst of all, terrible insomnia.

Henri Emile Benoit Matisse (1869-1954) is regarded by many as one of the greatest figures in 20th-century art. Henri Matisse was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France; the son of a middle-class family, Matisse practiced law as a young man. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, his mother gave him a set of paints and he became intrigued by the practice of painting. Two years later, he went to Paris to study art formally. His training was fairly formal and Matisse's early style was quite conventional; he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as the rebel of the class. By 1899 Matisse was becoming interested in and influenced by the work of Paul Cezanne , and Vincent Van Gogh . Then, in 1903 and 1904, Matisse encountered the pointillist painting of Henri Edmond Cross and Paul Signac By 1905 Matisse had produced some of his strongest works, including a striking painting of his wife, Green Stripe (Madame Matisse). In the same year Matisse exhibited this and similar paintings along with works by his artist companions, including

He worked in brilliant colour at Collioure (1905) with Derain and each painted a portrait of the other. Although his palette was somewhat subdued during the 1910s, e.g. Pond at Trivaux (c. 1916) or Painter and his Model (1916), he was as little touched by Cubism as Picasso was by Fauvism. He was deeply impressed by an exhibition of Near Eastern art in Munich (1910) and visited Morocco. His love of oriental fabrics and ceramics is reflected in the exotic decorative details and character of the great Odalisques of 1920-5. From 1917 he lived at Nice, with a visit to the U.S.A. and Tahiti in 1930-1. He worked on the chapel at Vence (1949-51); his other late works include the remarkable collages of cut-out, gouache-coloured paper shapes arranged in terms of expressive abstract rhythms, e.g. I'Escargot (1953). excerpts taken from Thames and Hudson, Dictionary of Art and Artists
An excerpt from Matisse by Gerard Durozoi
In 1941, after his operation, Matisse had the idea of constructing some kind of edifice as a gesture of gratitude towards the Dominican sisters who had nursed him. But it was not until 1947 that the project resurfaced. One of his former models, who had since become Sister Jacques-Marie, showed him a sketch for a stained-glass window she had conceived for the extension of the Dominican chapel at nearby Foyer Lacordaire. Matisse offered his advice, but soon formulated his own ambitious plans for an entirely new building, with the aid of Frere Rayssiguier, a student-architect, and the architect Auguste Perret.

Henri Matisse Henri Matisse Henri Matisse Henri Matisse was a painter, graphic artist, designer and sculptor. Along with Picasso, he was the foremost painter of the 1920s, admired for his sensitivity of line and the beauty of his palette. Moving from Impressionism to Neo-Impressionism to Fauvism, Matisse lived through poverty and immense wealth to become a patronised and revered painter of great importance. His work was joyous, and Matisse was, in his old-age, advised by his doctors to wear dark glasses as the colours in his palette were so bright. Henri Matisse
Biography: Henri Matisse was the leader of young rebel artists who brought the modern art movement into being in Paris ain the early 1900s. He was a master of color, a supreme draftsman who imbued a relatively small range of subject matter with constant variety. The artist's long career, begun with years of academic schooling, became set in its brilliant revolutionary course in 1905, when, in company with Rouault, Derain, Dufy, Vlaminck and a few others, Matisse set Paris on its ears in the Autumn Salon. The painters were excoriated as fauves wild beastsand their pictures, flaming defiant canvases, were condemned as impossible. On June 25, 1951, thousands of tourists and natives crowded the small village of Vence in south France to see the Bishop bless what Matisse had called his "masterpiece"a chapel on which he had started work four years before. Ailing and bedridden through much of this period, Matisse serenely progressed with his decorations for the chapel, drawing his designs with a long charcoal-tipped stick on the walls of his bedroom, later copying them on tiles and transferring them to stained glass. This was his last work, he announced: "My bags are packed." Matisse held no common ground with those who considered modern art as a new mode. He once said that every art is a logical reflection of the time in which it is producedan orderly and rational development of what had gone before.

58. National Gallery Of Art: Henri Matisse: Color And Light
henri matisse painted Open Window, Collioure in the summer painting and similar works by matisse, André Derain Soon, these artists were being called the fauves
http://www.nga.gov/education/schoolarts/matisse.htm
When I put a green, it it not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky. Henri Matisse Henri Matisse painted Open Window, Collioure
The scene is filled with light, vibrant, and inviting. The vermillion masts of blue-hulled boats float on pink waves below a sky banded with turquoise, pink, and periwinkle. Reflected in the glass of the open window, the scene becomes rectangular blocks of bright green, watery cyclamen, and lilac, and the walls framing the view are violet and turquoise. These are hardly the colors of natureand they provoked an outrage when Matisse exhibited Open Window, Collioure later in the year at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
"Tiens, Donatello chez les fauves" (Well, well, Donatello among the wild beasts). Soon, these artists were being called the fauves, and room VII le cage. It was one of the first places where the world got a glimpse of what art would be in the twentieth century.
The fauves liberated color from any requirements other than those posed by the painting itself. "When I put a green," Matisse would later say, "it is not grass. When I put a blue, it is not the sky." He was painting pictures, not things. Color was a tool of the painter's artistic intention and expression, no longer limited by the imitation of nature.
Though he was inspired by what he saw around him, for Matisse the imperative was to "interpret nature and submit it to the spirit of the picture." Derain later called the fauves' color "sticks of dynamite," but the serious and hard-working Matisse was an unlikely revolutionary. It was something of an accident that he became an artist at all. Growing up in the bleak, industrial regions of northern France, he had showed no talentor even interestin painting.
