Henri Matisse was the most important French painter of the 20th century, rivaling Picasso in his influence.
His background was diverse. He studied under Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau and experimented with Pointillism, which he found rigidly confining. Later, building on the work of and Gauguin , he and Andre Derain developed Fauvism, a much freer and more expressive style of painting which was in fact the forerunner of Expressionism.

artist often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. (Biographie en français)
Matisse, Master of Color
The art of our century has been dominated by two men: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They are artists of classical greatness, and their visionary forays into new art have changed our understanding of the world. Matisse was the elder of the two, but he was a slower and more methodical man by temperament and it was Picasso who initially made the greater splash. Matisse, like Raphael , was a born leader and taught and encouraged other painters, while Picasso, like Michelangelo , inhibited them with his power: he was a natural czar.

Henri Matisse Henri Emile Benoit Matisse was born on 31 December 1869 in Cateau-Cambresis, in the north of France. After his secondary education in Saint-Quentin, he studied law in Paris and got his degree. Without visiting any of the museums in Paris he returns to Cateau Cambresis in 1888, where he was able to get an administrative job in the court. In 1889 he took a painting course in Saint-Quentin. He worked in court for about two years, till he got ill in 1890. He had to stay in bed for about a year and was bored with everything. Therefor his mother bought him a paint-box. Out of boredom Matisse started painting and he felt like he was taken to some kind of paradise. After his illness he quit his administrative job and his father allowed him to attend the 'Academie Julian" in Paris. In 1893 the work of Matisse got noticed by Gustav Moreau . Moreau asked Matisse to join his atelier without doing an exam. He also predicted that Matisse would be the artist who would simplify the art. In 1995, after Matisse his daughter was born, he officially joined the atelier of Moreau and became his student. In 1896 and 1897 Matisse exposed his work for the first time in the 'Salon de la Societe Nationale'. In these works Matisse still used dark colors and the paintings were not daring at all. During this period Matisse often went to the Louvre where he got inspired by artists like

Henri Matisse
was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse became an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s. He was the leader of the Fauves, a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement. In 1905, works by Matisse and other Fauve painters were exhibited together. The bold forms and bright colors of these paintings shocked the Paris art world. Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of African, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the cubists.

La Desserte
During the period of 1899-1904 Matisse participated in a group exhibition at Berthe Weil’s Gallery (1902), painted townscapes with Marquet in Paris, spent the summer of 1904 working with Signac and Cross at Saint-Tropez, and in 1905-6 painted views of Collioure.
Nymph and Satyr , for Osthaus’s mansion in Hagen, Westphalia. In 1908 Matisse painted the monumental canvas The Red Room ; and in 1909-10 executed two large decorative panels, The Dance and The Music on commissions from the Moscow businessman S. Shchukin. Sculpture, too, began to occupy a significant place in Matisse’s artistic endeavor and was exhibited for the first time in 1912, in New York. At this time, Matisse set forth the theoretical basis for his art in his Notes d’un peintre (1908) and expounded his views on painting in the art school (the Atelier Matisse), which he had organized. But soon teaching began to weigh heavily on the artist, and he withdrew more and more frequently to Issy-des-Moulineaux.

Matisse, Henri E E Pronunciation Key Matisse, Henri , French painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Along with Picasso , Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in (c. 1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g.

Henri Matisse
French

Self Portrait “To find joy in the sky, the trees, the flowers… There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”
- Matisse Henri Matisse was born December 31, 1869 in northern France. As a young man, he went to Paris to study law, graduated, and in 1889 returned home to work as a clerk in a law office. It was at this time that he had an acute attack of appendicitis, requiring surgery and a long convalescence. His mother gave him a paint box, and at the age of 21, Matisse discovered painting. He returned to work, and every morning before work, he attended drawing classes; at lunch time he would paint for an hour or so, and then return to work. After work he would paint till night fell. It was his life. In 1891 set off for Paris. Despite that one of his first teachers told Matisse that he would never learn to draw, he worked hard and was sponsored as a candidate for the school for fine arts. He failed the entrance exam and enrolled instead in an evening school. He later joined the studio of symbolist/Mannerism painter Gustove Moreau, who encouraged the young Matisse “to look inward.” Matissse began his journey of studies which ultimately lead him to merge his love of the work of the old masters, his weakness for ornament, and his love of line, shape and color.
