Vladmir Dzhanibekov
Dzhanibekov is one of the former Soviet Union's most experienced cosmonauts and one of two space explorers/artists represented in this collection. Born in 1942, he now lives in the city most space artists can only hope to visit: Zvezdny Gorodok, "Star City." This is an entire town created around the center for cosmonaut training, where the cosmonauts and their families can live together. Star City is in a rural, wooded setting not far from Moscow and resembles a comfortable and attractive retirement village more than it does a military base. Dzhanibekov is a cosmonaut and a major-general in the Russian Air Force, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. He became a cosmonaut in 1970 and made five flights as spacecraft commander, spending an aggregate of 146 days in space between 1978 and 1985. He commanded the heroic effort that saved the Salyut 7 space station in 1985. He studied art at the V. Komarov Higher Air Force School at Eisk. He is a member of the USSR Artists Union and its Cosmic Group. He's held numerous exhibitions in the former Soviet Union, the United States, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

McPhee, Campbell explore artists' 'Lives' in new course "What's in a Life?" That's the question Sarah McPhee and Jean Campbell asked students in an intriguing new art history course last spring on "Artistic Biography in Early Modern Europe." "The individual artist's life as a focus of historical study is one of the marked developments of the Renaissance," explained McPhee, assistant professor of art history. "From the 16th century onward, biography has been one of the dominant modes of historical art writing. Our seminar considered artists' biographies as literature, as historical record and as aesthetic theory." Together, McPhee and Campbell took students from antiquity to modern times, considering the basic concepts of biography and artistic writing. Both instructors consider the teaching experience one of the best they have had at Emory. For what McPhee termed as "an extraordinarily demanding course," the students produced high-level critical analyses and a series of imaginative essays. During the semester they examined numerous texts, ranging from Giorgio Vasari's

Steina and her husband and collaborator, Woody Vasulka, are two key artists in the development of video technology and its use in the creation of moving image artworks. In her earliest works, Steina, a classically trained violinist who played with the Iceland National Orchestra, synthesised an intuitive, atmospheric musical approach to video with a desire to test and expand the limits of the medium. With Woody, she was responsible for some key developments in electronic imaging technologies, and in their early video experiments in the renowned New York artists' venue, The Kitchen, they created spatial and interactive audio and video installations such as Machine Vision (1975) and All Vision (1975) that can be considered key works in contemporary art.

A multitude of positions are confronted with the exhibiting artists' common interest in inscribing themselves with their work into collective mental and emotional processes and linking contemporary art with other topical discourses. This is also one reason for the great interest in positions from the field of film - endeavors are undertaken here to do justice to the theoretical and historical significance of the format of film, which is naturally not to be taken as autarchic, for contemporary art production. The artists elected to the board of directors (currently Matthias Herrmann, Anna Meyer, Heimo Zobernig, Johanna Kandl, Manfred Erjautz, Sandrine von Klot, Dorit Margreiter, Constanze Ruhm, Martin Walde, Willi Kopf, Hans Kupelwieser), who have developed the exhibition program together, stand for a broad perspective of complex works, which regard the viewers as part of the artistic process. All exhibitions are accompanied by a publication.

Product Reviews: A must read for lovers of Italian Renaissance art In studying up for a visit to Italy I noticed that art historians still directly and frequently cite this book, written over 400 years ago. Since Vasari was a contemporary of the High-Renaissance artists, I thought it would be interesting to read his descriptions of artists and their technical development. The book is organized into a series of essays focusing on artists from Cimabue to Titian. In this translation, the editors have included only those artists still believed to have made a significant contribution. To my surprise, this book was not only informative, but it was also quite entertaining. Vasari focuses mostly on the artistic development of each artist, but frequently strays into fascinating stories about their personal lives. The writing style is surprisingly readable, thanks to both Vasari and the editors. The notes in the back of the book are extremely useful. They point out where Vasari has been proven inaccurate, elaborate on some of Vasari's points, and provide updated locations for some of the works.

Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery Located in Tokyo's Hatsudai, Tokyo Opera City is a large cultural community comprising three zones focusing on the arts, business and commercial amenities. Starting from the "theater city" concept, Tokyo Opera City is designed with its focus firmly on the lifestyle of the Tokyo metropolis in the 21st Century. Apart from art galleries, the area includes one of Tokyo's tallest buildings, the 54-story Tokyo Opera City Tower housing a vibrant business community and the NTT InterCommunication Center (ICC), which presents multimedia art created using up-to-the-minute technology, and also Tokyo Opera City concert halls, the Takemitsu Memorial and Recital Hall, which were designed to sound like musical instruments. The New National Theater, which functions as Tokyo's opera house is located on the next block.
Opened in Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery on September 9, 1999, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery holds special exhibitions about four times a year, introducing various and unique activities of art. Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery also houses a collection, mainly donated by Mr. Terada Kotaro, which consists of works of Japanese art since the end of WW II including a large body of works by NAMBATA Tatsuoki and his son NAMBATA Fumio, who have been regarded as important abstract painters in Japan.
Along with the special exhibitions, the Gallery also holds an exhibition series called gproject N,h which aims at focusing on young Japanese artists. This series was founded by the will of the late NAMBATA Tastuoki and has been subsidized by donations of his bereaved family. Works by the artists who are selected by the selection committee are shown in the corridor on the 4th floor in principle.

I read this book in preparation for an upcoming trip to Florence. I am a big Michelangelo fan to begin with, and the idea of reading something written by a contemporary and aficionado of his was intriguing. I was well rewarded for my interests. Vasari clearly idolized Michelangeo and Raphael. That is apparent, but as he did for every other artist's Life he covered, the level of personal detail and anecdotes is invaluable for someone like me looking for the story behind the artists. Artists from each phase of the Renaissance are covered with detail of both their personal and artistic lives. I can say I learned so much from each chapter that I will surely be taking this book with me for reference when I am in Florence. One caveat, I think it would be helpful to have a book with photographs of the works Vasari discusses. Unless you are already up to speed on the major Renaissance works, it is more helpful to visualize them with the assistance of Vasari's descriptions. I found myself running to the internet often to see what he had been talking about.
