Tools as Art: The Hechinger Collection
Joyce and Edward Linde Gallery, Arcade Gallery
March 8 - May 25, 2003
Opening Reception: Friday, March 14, 6 - 8 pm LINCOLN-DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park is proud to be among the seven venues selected for this national traveling exhibition. Tools as Art celebrates the amazing variety of twentieth-century art that represents or incorporates tools and hardware. Tools as Art: The Hechinger Collection recognizes the ubiquity of tools in our lives with art that magically transforms utilitarian objects into fanciful works of beauty, surprise, and wit. Many works confound the barrier between art and life by recycling actual tools or exploiting the illusionistic properties of materials. Several reference labor and the change in production. Others mine the associative potential of tools and underscore the sheer beauty of a tool's design. A small complementary exhibition on the Tools as Art theme-culled from DeCordova Museum's Permanent Collection-is on view in the Arcade Gallery.

    In These Troubled Times:
Mikey General And Lehbanchuleh's Roots Reggae Salve
Roots reggae is alive and well. Dedicated fans of the music are owed a great many thanks for this vitality, but also those artists who strive to carry the reggae torch despite the lack of mass appeal, promotion and most importantly recognition, are the integral reason for reggae's longevity. The combination of conscious and uplifting lyrics together with a reggae rhythm that is deeply rooted in the tradition of naturality and Rastafarian beliefs results in 'roots reggae,' a music that has been expressed since the 1970's. Throughout the years, the larger genre of reggae has spawned many branches; dancehall, rockers, ragga, lovers, and dub are some of the many. However, roots reggae provides those who choose to partake in it, a general feeling of strength and guidance that the other genres may not always offer. Roots reggae messages can include such themes as personal power, history, salvation, strength, political and spiritual guidance, togetherness. Even love songs can fit into its definition. These messages are presented in such a way that is easily accessible to the listener. The artists who incorporate roots reggae music and its accompanying themes are conscious of the music's positivity and ability to create lasting change. Looking back over the not too distant past, reggae music has been overwhelmed with back catalog reissues, compilations, and crossover acts. So few of the major reggae labels concentrate on releasing new music by reggae artists; instead choosing to focus solely on reviving the sounds of old. While this is an honorable and essential task, the market is stifled to the point where modern roots reggae receives fewer slots in music stores. Then there is the detrimental case of pop crossover artists who "borrow" the reggae sound, only to soften and dilute its authenticity to achieve mass appeal, eliminating the powerful essence that true reggae holds. This works to slash the amount of exposure to quality reggae acts and ensures that even less people hear the crucial sounds of the roots variety.

    About the Exhibition
Presented by Cancom, Iqqaipaa: Celebrating Inuit Art, 1948-1970 is an exhibition of more than 150 works, designed not only to pay tribute to Inuit art but also to explore its origins. The exhibition tells the fascinating story of a culture in turmoil and transition out of which a distinctive and important artistic movement was born. Iqqaipaa: Celebrating Inuit Art, 1948-1970 will demonstrate how art making not only provided a welcome income to individuals and communities after the traditional economy had collapsed, but also eased the transition from camp to settlement life by providing a sense of pride and cultural identity in the face of overwhelming acculturation. The exhibition ran from April 1, 1999 to February 6, 2000.
    Accessibility
The exhibition is designed to maximize the enjoyment of visitors with disabilities. Two large sculptures are displayed uncovered, and visitors, especially those who are visually impaired, are encouraged to touch the carving and experience it in the way the artist did. In addition, tactile tours, carving demonstrations, high-legibility labels and wide pathways among amply spaced installations make for an exhibition that is convenient and open to people in wheelchairs or visitors with other special needs.

(Swatch commissioned Australian aboriginal artist B. Mutji to create a design for its "Limited Edition Artist's Collection.") The hundreds of tribes have quite distinct art traditions, all relating to "The Dreaming" and are adopting diverse mediums and a wide range of materials to express their relationship to the past and to their present social situation. Slides taken by the lecturer on a six-week trip in Australia will illustrate some of the richness and diversity of this art. Archaeological and ethnographic information will provide a context for understanding and enjoying this tradition. Ms. Jean Adelman

Yoko Ono, widow of the late Beatle John Lennon, has inaugurated her own peace award by giving $50,000 (£31,900) prize money to Israeli and Palestinian artists. Ono bestowed the first Lennon Ono Grant for Peace to Israeli Zvi Goldstein and Palestinian Khalil Rabah on Wednesday at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, for their efforts to remain "creative and inspirational" amid the tensions of war. The award was made on the day that would have been Lennon's 62nd birthday. Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment in 1980 by Mark Chapman. Earlier this week, Chapman - who was jailed after he admitted killing the celebrated musician - failed to secure his release from prison after the New York State parole board turned down his second parole bid. The bed protest became world famous
At the awards ceremony, Ono said: "Imagine all the people living life in peace," echoing the words to Lenon's peace anthem Imagine.

Liz Magor's installations in sculpture and photography examine questions of time, identity, and existence. Magor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1948, one of five children. She and her family moved to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, in the early 1950s. She attended the University of British Columbia from 1966 to 1968. She then moved on to the Parsons School of Design in New York City, studying there from 1968 to 1970, before finishing her formal training at the Vancouver School of Art in 1971. The Birdnester (early 1970s), Magor presented these natural objects using modern production and marketing methods. At the same time, she investigated the subtle differences that occurred amongst these seemingly identical items. Later pieces of this period, for example Four Boys and a Girl (1979), involved the creation of her own multiples; she presented the means of creation, and the finished products, together in the same work. Many of her works were created using non-traditional organic materials that changed or decayed over time, creating subtle differences amongst the objects. Her interest was in the processes of creation and destruction, as much as the product itself. Magor moved to Toronto in the early 1980s, living there until 1992. Her work took a slight change in direction, to creations that more directly told a story. She began to examine the establishment of identity through objective means, rather than identity as it evolved over time. A particular example of this is the piece

Affectionately called "The Girls," Frances Loring and Florence Wyle were also known as the first women of Canadian sculpture. Spanning more than 50 years, their careers as sculptors have given Canadians a rich body of work that may be discovered and admired in many public spaces and galleries throughout the country. Loring and Wyle's influence on Canadian art and artists has been significant. They challenged the establishment by setting forth to prove that sculpture was as important an art form as any other, and they succeeded amidst adverse conditions. At the turn of the 20th century, sculpture in Canada was still very much considered a curiosity, rather than an admired art form. The lack of patrons, the serious shortage of foundries and the relatively high cost of materials were all factors contributing to an inauspicious environment for sculptors. In addition, these artists had to rely heavily on commissions as a source of revenue. Born in Wardner, Idaho in 1887, Frances Loring studied art in her native United States, as well as in many European cities, before settling in Canada in 1913. Her decision to move to Toronto was motivated, in part, by a desire to participate in the artistic development of a young country. Loring achieved this goal and many others throughout her illustrious career.

The Lives of the Artists (Oxford Worlds Classics) > Customer Review #1: A must read for lovers of Italian Renaissance art

In studying up for a visit to Italy I noticed that art historians still directly and frequently cite this book, written over 400 years ago. Since Vasari was a contemporary of the High-Renaissance artists, I thought it would be interesting to read his descriptions of artists and their technical development. The book is organized into a series of essays focusing on artists from Cimabue to Titian. In this translation, the editors have included only those artists still believed to have made a significant contribution. To my surprise, this book was not only informative, but it was also quite entertaining. Vasari focuses mostly on the artistic development of each artist, but frequently strays into fascinating stories about their personal lives. The writing style is surprisingly readable, thanks to both Vasari and the editors. The notes in the back of the book are extremely useful. They point out where Vasari has been proven inaccurate, elaborate on some of Vasaris points, and provide updated locations for some of the works.

She shows how the role of muse has evolved along with women's societal roles, and how intense artist-muse relationships, marked by longing and obsession, take their toll on muse and artist alike. The women, and their relationships with the men they helped make famous, are so diverse that at times the book is a bit disjointed, but overall it succeeds well. Prose is hardly an unbiased observer; it is clear what she thinks of each of her subjects, and her opinionated stance makes an interesting subject that much more lively.
