Just picked this one up last night... it almost doesn't matter what piece he's singing... whether I would still like the song coming out of the mouth of someone else. Bostridge's clarity, pronunciation, enunciation, delivery, and just the timbre of his voice make all he sings a pleasure to hear. Although I do have limited exposure to this field, his intelligence and care MUST place him among the all-time elite singers of lieder.
After listening to this disc, I was reminded of 2 things... how much I dislike this format of recordings, as it is little more than a pop compilation, with little continuity or sense of relevance from piece to piece (anyone less, and I'd be reselling this disc by now)... and also what a magnificent Peter Grimes (probably my favorite English opera) he would make. To me, he is better in the style of Peter Pears than than Peter Pears himself! I've said this before, I know, but this disc just made me want to say it again... Some one back me up here!

Some General Thoughts:
Oxfordians vs. Literary Scholars
Part 12 of "Critically Examining Oxfordian Claims"
Mark Alexander wrote: Professors and many others have incredible prestige and psychological/financial investment in Stratford. It is not stupid of them to want to preserve what functions as an important "anchor point" in their reality. I think you're focusing on the wrong level here. For me, and for most other Shakespeare scholars I'm aware of, it's not specifically the challenge to Shakespeare that bothers us about Oxfordians; rather, it's the total disregard for historical method, and the essential arbitrariness of the Oxfordian position. Our reasons for believing that William Shakespeare of Stratford wrote the plays published under his name are the same type as the reasons for believing that any other Elizabethan author wrote the works ascribed to him; indeed, as I've said many times before, the evidence for Shakespeare's authorship is more extensive than the comparable evidence for the great majority of Elizabethan authors, especially playwrights. If you insist on disbelieving in Shakespeare's authorship, fine, but then you'll have to also disbelieve in the authorship of most other Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, if you're going to be consistent. There are actually Oxfordians who believe that most plays of the era were written by noblemen in disguise. One Oxfordian I met claimed (after some prodding by me) that "John Webster" was actually a pseudonym for Mary Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke. I've gotten other Oxfordians to make similar concessions, though they're usually pretty vague about who wrote what. I think most people would be much less receptive to a theory that says that not only Shakespeare, but the bulk of Elizabethan drama was written by noblemen who used the identities of real middle-class men as fronts. But that's the logical outcome of Oxfordian methods, if they're applied consistently. It would be an absolute piece of cake for me to prove that the historical Christopher Marlowe, John Fletcher, Francis Beaumont, or John Webster did not write the plays attributed to them, if I used Oxfordian methods.

In keeping with recent tradition, the Secession will stand by its complex and critical approach to a coming to terms with the diverse fields of reality in contemporary art today. The attempt to translate questions arising from the personal, the regional, and the medium-specific into a common language might be seen as the connecting thread of the different exhibition projects. A characteristic feature of the way the Secession settles on its program is the democratic decision-making process instated by the statutes of 1897: the artists elected to the board (at present Manfred Erjautz, Matthias Herrmann, Johanna Kandl, Willi Kopf, Brigitte Kowanz, Anna Meyer, Constanze Ruhm, Stefan Sandner, Matta Wagnest, Martin Walde, Heimo Zobernig) invite other artists to exhibit. This makes a wide range of artistic positions possible; what they share is their striving toward a precision in artistic thought. All exhibitions are accompanied by a publication. http://www.cofc.edu/halseygallery/about_files/general.htm
The Halsey Gallery was named for artist William Halsey , a Charleston native whose works were shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to list a few. Halsey was the first person to teach a studio art course at the College of Charleston. He taught here for 20 years. Upon his retirement in 1984, the faculty voted to name the art gallery after him to honor his contribution to the arts in Charleston. Mr. Halsey died in 1999, but his widow, Corrie McCallum (also a terrific artist), lives just a few blocks from the campus on Fulton Street. At 89, she is slowing down a bit, but still paints when she can. The Halsey Gallery hosts between six and ten exhibitions per year. The focus here is on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists of national stature. We have also maintained a strong international component over the years, bringing in artists from Italy, Canada, Germany, Japan, China, India, Africa, and Slovenia. For our upcoming Piccolo Spoleto show, we are bringing in the work of a pair of Samizdat (underground) artists from Moscow, now living in New York. The Halsey Gallery is positioning itself to become one of the most adventurous and innovative venues for the display of contemporary art in the southeastern United States. At the present time, the Halsey Gallery facilities consist of a 750 square foot downstairs gallery and a 980 square foot upstairs gallery. We have adapted our programs to fit this unique "stacked" gallery configuration. The planned expansion of the Halsey Gallery in the new "annex" calls for 5,000 square feet of exhibition space, with another 2,500 square feet devoted to storage space, preparation areas, offices, and a conference room/library. We intend to produce exhibitions, publications, and programming commensurate with the significance of this new location.

http://www.plugin.org/bronson/
Plug In presents the major installation "Fin de siècle" by Canadian art group General Idea, from December 16, 2000 to January 20, 2001. On exhibition concurrently with this large work will be a related General Idea installation entitled Putti, the components of which will be offered for sale, with proceeds going to charity in support of the AIDS struggle. Also being shown is GI's piece, Putti, an installation of ten thousand of small soaps cast to represent Harp seal pups and intended as a fundraiser for an AIDS charity. They are available to the public for a suggested donation of $10.00 each, and AA Bronson will be available for signing at the opening. All of the funds raised in this way will be directed towards the Emergency Assistance Fund, which is administered by Winnipeg's Village Clinic. The Toronto-based artists' collective General Idea (Jorge Zontal, AA Bronson and Felix Partz) produced art in a variety of media from 1969 to 1994. "In 1968, Jorge Saia, Michael Tims and Ron Gabe met in the shadowy corridors of Toronto's new cultural and sexual underground, became close friends and changed their names, respectively, to Jorge Zontal, AA Bronson and Felix Partz. Under these new names, and the corporate title General Idea, the young men launched a joint career in easel painting and installation art, performance, video, photography and even the manufacture of mass-produced souvenirs - a project unprecedented in Canada for its wit, sophisticated satire and penetrating intelligence."

September 14, 2002 - February 23, 2003
Opening Reception: Friday, September 13, 2002 from 6 - 9 pm
DeCordova's landmark retrospective, Painting in Boston: 1950-2000, is unprecedented in scope and depth. Although the history of the first half century of the discipline-the period of the so-called "Boston School"-has been well studied and represented, this cannot be said for the latter half. DeCordova addresses this situation of neglect in a timely manner, while many of the significant figures of the period are still living and able to contribute their knowledge and perspective. Drawn from DeCordova's Permanent Collection, other museums, and private collections, 75 paintings by 67 artists will be mounted in the Museum's main public galleries, which total over 10,000 square feet of exhibition space. The exhibition is structured thematically around the four major stylistic tendencies that have dominated painting in the Boston area over the last five decades:
