Vincent Van Gogh (
Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands, son of a small town preacher. He began his working life employed by Groupil & Cie, an international art dealer, but then left to consider a career with the church as his religious zeal grew. In 1879, having grown disenchanted with both formal religious education and the evangelist path, he decided to become an arist. Over the course of the next ten years, before he took his own life, he produced an enormous body of work. While it is not quite true that he never sold a piece of art, during his lifetime his primary supporters were his brother Theo and other artists. Van Gogh also relied on Theo for financial support. While some art historians question how much of Van Gogh current popularity is due to romantic mythology around the "insane genius", his work is unquestionably powerful and unique.

In 1869, he got a position at the art dealers, Goupil and Co. in The Hague, through his uncle, and worked with them until he was dismissed from the London office in 1873. He worked as a schoolmaster in England (1876), before training for the ministry at Amsterdam University (1877). After he failed to get a post in the Church, he went to live as an independent missionary among the Borinage miners. "He was largely self-taught as an artist, although he received help from his cousin, Mauve. His first works were heavily painted, mud-colored and clumsy attempts to represent the life of the poor (e.g. Potato-Eaters , 1885, Amsterdam), influenced by one of his artistic heroes, Millet . He moved to Paris in 1886, living with his devoted brother, Theo, who as a dealer introduced him to artists like

Gogh, Vincent van
Montmartre
1886; Art Institute of Chicago One of the numerous paintings of Montmartre, then still a countrified suburb where Van Gogh shared living quarters with his brother, this picture illustrates both his interest in his new surroundings and also his change of style from dark and heavy tones to light and tender color. From the terrace and observation post of the Moulin de la Galette he suggests not so much a view of the city as the prospect of infinite space. It is surprising to think that only the year before this, back in Nuenen, he had painted in an entirely different key and mood his dusky, lamp-lit peasant genre-scene, The Potato Eaters His style was not yet finalized (though he could give even the row of lamp-posts a unique individuality). He did not venture to challenge comparison with Monet Sisley Renoir and Degas whose work was shown by Theo van Gogh on the Boulevard Montmartre and whom Vincent referred to as `the great impressionists of the Grand Boulevard'. He styled himself one of the `painters of the Petit Boulevard', exhibiting with Bernard, Anquetin, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec at a café on the Boulevard Clichy. Yet in this period of two years before the craving for sunlight and warmth drove him southwards to Arles, it is evident that he was absorbing influences and ideas at a feverish rate. In 1886 the Neo-Impressionism of
