No surprises here, MC Escher is one of my favorite artists, as he is with most of the rest of the world. Many people liken my artwork to that of Escher, but I definately don't. Escher's work is extremely precise, there are no 'happy accidents' which are so common in my loose penwork. The piece below is by far my favorite, an excellent representation of a quite complex and tricky idea.

The best Escher book I've found (and there are soo many of them) is "The World of M.C. Escher" published by Abradale Press. Don't let the cover fool you, it is the most complete, including many images and studies I've never seen anywhere else. M.C. Escher Brief Biography
This biography is condensed mostly from the biography written by Bruno Ernst for the book M.C. Escher - His Life and Complete Graphic Work This biography is about 90% complete.
    Early Life
Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in the Dutch province of Friesland . His parents, George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher, had three sons of which Maurits (called Mauk for short) was the youngest. His father, George, was a civil engineer. The Escher family was living in Leeuwarden in 1898, where George served as Chief Engineer for a government bureau. The family lived in a grand house named "Princessehof," which would later become a museum and host exhibitions of M.C. Escher's works. Young M.C. Escher moved with his family to Arnhem. He attended elementary and secondary school there, and also in the seaside town of Zandvoort, where he lived for a while to improve his health. In 1907, he started learning carpentry and piano. In secondary school, his marks were poor except in drawing. His art teacher took and interest in his drawing talent, and taught him to make linocuts. He failed his final exam and thus never officially graduated. In 1913, M.C. Escher met his lifelong friend Bas Kist in religious school (which he attended at his parent's direction, even though he wasn't very religious). Kist was also interested in printing techniques, and may have encouraged M.C. to make his first linoleum cut works. Amoung these early works is a portrait of his father which is the oldest surviving work by the artist. In 1917, the two friends visited the artist Gert Stegeman, who had a printing press in his studio. Some of M.C.'s work from this year were apparently printed at Stegeman's.

    Biography of M.C. Escher
Biography of M. C. Escher, a graphic artist who is considered the Master of Symmetry. He is still celebrated by millions today.
    M. C. Escher, otherwise known as Maurits Cornelis Escher, carried many titles during his career as an artist. Often he was, and still is, referred to as a Specialist in Optical Art, Master of Symmetry, Dutch Engraver, Dutch Graphic Artist, Dutch Illustrator and Dutch Mathematician. All these titles hold true to the diversity of this mans style. His passions, or addictions as he so often called them, focused on tessellation (inter linking figurative work) and regular plane division. Escher, born to a civil engineer June 17, 1898, was encouraged by his family at a young age to pursue an education in Architectural Arts. His lack of interest and poor grades led him in a different direction with his artistic talents. It was not until he reached age twenty-one that he discovered his true calling: Graphic Art. From then on, his success story writes itself. He taught himself in the areas of math and science through the study of technical papers in order to achieve his artistic goals. This caught the attention of many scientists and mathematicians, alike. It is often wondered if he was truly an artist or a mathematician by his own right. His particular artistic style is said to be what has bridged the gap between art and math and art and science. bodyOffer(30471) Upon finishing Art school, Escher traveled Spain, France and Italy to vacation and gather inspiration for his work. Throughout his studies, he became more fascinated with structures than in regular portraits or landscapes. His early works suggests differently, as he placed his focus on particular places and people. He worked primarily in engraved woodcuts so he could repeat patterns quicker and easier. During his career, he never felt completely comfortable with calling himself an artist or an artisan. He felt such titles would limit his potential and cause too many barriers between his interests and the art world.

Experiment with designing a planar tesselation using a recognizable image. Dutch artist, MC Escher,1893-1972 What observations can you make about Escher from this work of art? M. C. Escher:"ESCHER on ESCHER Exploring the Infinite", p. 70 Published in 1989 by HARRY N. ABRAMS, INC., New York Order and Chaos Major themes in Escher's work are contrast, duality, transformation, infinity and spatial paradoxes. He uses symmetry to order this world of duality and paradox. In the slide above Escher explores the duality of order vs. chaos. We shall see how this idea influences his work, both formally and psychologically. Tiling Escher was a great master of tessellation (the regular division of the plane, or tiling). He created symmetrical designs and planar tesselations, which he described as congruent, convex polygons joined together." M.C.Escher:"ESCHER on ESCHER Exploring the Infinite"
