3. The Insects Of M.C.Escher, Cultural Entomology Digest 1
Cultural Entomology exposes how insects play a major role in almost every aspect of human culture. Discover just how long insects have influenced the humanities. 000 year old Lascaux cave paintings, escher noted that prehistoric artists were in direct contact with nature unlike in the geometry, original notes, and workbooks of M.C. escher.
http://www.insects.org/ced1/mc_esh.html
by Dexter Sear
Kalaheo, Hawaii U.S.A. Born June 7, 1898, Escher was a self proclaimed graphic artist and self denounced studio artist. He became fascinated with the geometric processes of filling the plain (tessellation) and his imagery took a biased towards asymmetrical natural forms of which insects were often his subject matter. He made the comment that insects are generally best recognized from above; his prints reflecting this belief. In searching for the possible inspiration behind his insect imagery, it is hard to find much more than an obsession with process and order although he developed themes such as evolution and metamorphosis. Escher's biographies do expose some examples of his feelings towards nature. While observing 70,000 year old Lascaux cave paintings, Escher noted that prehistoric artists were in direct contact with nature unlike contemporary artists who are generally exposed to nature through what he considered an obstructive educational system. He later made an interesting analogy; illustrations compare to the graphic print as a caterpillar does to a butterfly. He went on to explain that illustrations are not acceptable as autonomous manifestations of art but that they are only an interim stage. Therefore, the illustration, like the caterpillar, as the end result is inherently dissatisfying. Escher respected the order he found within the insect realm. He commented that the graphic arts inherent fascination comes from the desire to multiply and that the beauty of the craft was in the forced limitations resulting from the technique.

Maurits Escher was always referred to by his parents as Mauk. He was brought up by his father, George Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his second wife Sarah who was the daughter of a government minister. He lived with his four older brothers, Arnold, Johan, Berend, and Edmond. Maurits attended both elementary and secondary school in Arnhem between 1912 and 1918, where he failed to shine in many of his subjects, but exhibited an early interest in both music and carpentry. People expressed the opinion that he possessed a mathematical brain but he never excelled in the subject at any stage during his schooling and treated the subject with some considerable unease. He wrote [7]:- At high school in Arnhem, I was extremely poor at arithmetic and algebra because I had, and still have, great difficulty with the abstractions of numbers and letters. When, later, in stereometry solid geometry , an appeal was made to my imagination, it went a bit better, but in school I never excelled in that subject. But our path through life can take strange turns.

    Biography of MC Escher
The main subjects of Escher's early art are Rome and the Italian countryside. While living in Italy from 1922 to 1935, he spent the spring and summer months traveling throughout the country to make drawings. Later, in his studio in Rome, Escher developed these into prints. Whether depicting the winding roads of the Italian countryside, the dense architecture of small hillside towns, or details of massive buildings in Rome, Escher often created enigmatic spatial effects by combining various often conflicting vantage points, for instance, looking up and down at the same time. He frequently made such effects more dramatic through his treatment of light, using vivid contrasts of black and white.

Maurits Cornelis Escher (June 17, 1898 - March 27, 1972) was a Dutch artist most known for his woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints, which tend to feature impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, and interlocking geometric patterns which change gradually into completely different forms.
    Escher's youth
Maurits Cornelis, or Mauk as he was to be nicknamed, was born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. He was the youngest son of hydraulics engineer George Arnold Escher and his second wife, Sarah Gleichman. In 1903, the family moved to Arnhem where he took carpentry and piano lessons until the age of thirteen.
