What is Artificial Intelligence?
Definition...
A rtificial Intelligence is a branch of Science which deals with helping machines find solutions to complex problems in a more human-like fashion. This generally involves borrowing characteristics from human intelligence, and applying them as algorithms in a computer friendly way. A more or less flexible or efficient approach can be taken depending on the requirements established, which influences how artificial the intelligent behaviour appears. AI is generally associated with Computer Science , but it has many important links with other fields such as Maths Psychology Cognition Biology and Philosophy , among many others. Our ability to combine knowledge from all these fields will ultimately benefit our progress in the quest of creating an intelligent artificial being. Further details... Computer Science 373(S) : Artificial Intelligence
This course introduces the state-of-the-art in the field of Artificial Intelligence, which is concerned with the ability to create machines that perform tasks requiring "intelligence." This course covers techniques for solving problems in the field, includes knowledge representation, search strategies, planning, and reasoning. It then explores those further by surveying current applications in the areas of machine learning, game playing, robotics, and natural language processing. Format: lecture/laboratory. Evaluation will be based on problem assignments. Four programming projects in the half of the semester and a larger project spanning most of the second half account for 70% of the student's final grad. A midterm examination and a six-page survey paper account for the remainder of the student's grade. Project Course. Prerequisites: Computer Science 136 and Mathematics 251 This class is scheduled to be offered in the Spring of 2006

  • Lectures and Readings Computer Science 373 is an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence is a concept that has been pondered by many, from computer scientists to philosophers to novelists and screenwriters. Movies and novels give us images of walking, talking, and thinking robots. While many of the popular notions of AI stem from the vision of the poineers of the field, the popular view of AI doesn't begin to touch the surface of this rich discipline. Many familiar concepts in Computer Science have their roots in AI. Compilers, timesharing, and the object-oriented programming paradigm can all trace roots back to the early days of AI. More recently, the field of AI has expanded considerably to include topics that don't necessarily mimic human thought and behavior, but that go beyond it. Robots now explore areas that humans can't reach; cars drive themselves without needing coffee to keep them awake late at night; and "datamining" algorithms find patterns in terabytes of data that no human could possibly analyze. Fundamental to any area of Computer Science are, of course, data structures and algorithms. The first half of this course will be devoted to the study of core AI search algorithms and knowledge representations. There are far too many topics within AI to consider all of them in depth in twelve weeks. Indeed, each topic is rich enough to be a course on its own. Therefore, the second half of the semester will focus primarily on one topic: machine learning. Though this will be the focus, we will also spend considerable time on robotics.
