Arthur demonstrated as President that he was above factions within the Republican Party, if indeed not above the party itself. Perhaps in part his reason was the well-kept secret he had known since a year after he succeeded to the Presidency, that he was suffering from a fatal kidney disease. He kept himself in the running for the Presidential nomination in 1884 in order not to appear that he feared defeat, but was not renominated, and died in 1886.

Garfield died from an assassin's bullet. Arthur was the fourth vice president to succeed to the presidency upon the death of a chief executive.
Arthur had risen rapidly in the Republican Party machine (organization) of New York City. In 1871, he became collector of the New York Custom House, then the largest single federal office in the United States. Widespread dishonesty in government occurred during this period, and Arthur used his office to reward Republicans and strengthen the party. These actions contributed to graft and waste in the custom house and led to his removal in 1878.
    Arthur's presidency
As president, however, Arthur surprised the nation by the honesty and efficiency shown by his Administration. Protests by reformers about the dishonesty of previous administrations in the appointment of government officials caused Congress to pass the Civil Service Act. Arthur signed the law and administered it faithfully.
Arthur enjoyed fashionable surroundings and fine clothes. He also liked to entertain friends. Tall, ruddy, and handsome, Arthur was sometimes called the "Gentleman Boss." He traveled widely as president, attending the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City and touring Florida and Yellowstone National Park.

This president spent his last years in office knowing he could very well die of Bright's disease before his term ended. He knew that the more active he was the greater his chance of succumbing to the disease and yet he even made a halfhearted attempt to gain his party's nomination for another term. He survived his nearly 4 years in office and did not die until a year and a half later, in 1886.
He had quite a wardrobe: 80 pairs of pants.

    ARTHUR, CHESTER A.
, twenty-first president of the United States. Born in Vermont, Arthur graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, and taught school before moving to New York City, where he was admitted to the bar in 1854. An antislavery Whig, Arthur joined the Republican party at its birth. He was appointed engineer in chief on the New York governor's military staff in 1861 and then became quartermaster general of New York because of his honesty and efficiency. He served until the Republicans lost the governorship in 1862. After the Civil War, Arthur helped build Roscoe Conkling's political organization as collector of the Port of New York, where he was responsible for collecting two-thirds of the nation's tariff revenue. Arthur mastered the tariff laws and within the limits imposed by the spoils system brought some efficiency to the customhouse. Nevertheless, President Rutherford B. Hayes removed him from office in 1878, believing that partisan considerations were his central concern. Out of office but not out of politics, Arthur became chairman of the New York Republican State Committee and in 1880 was nominated for the vice presidency to balance the ticket headed by James A. Garfield. The Republicans won the election, but after Garfield was assassinated, Arthur became president in September 1881.

The Chester A. Arthur Room Designer Chester A. Arthur - The Man
Chester A. Arthur is one of two U.S. Presidents born in Vermont. His life spans the era from the Civil War to the dawn of the 20th century. Although Arthur's detractors alleged that he was born in Quebec and should have been ineligible for the presidency, history states that he was probably born in 1829 in Fairfield, VT, where one can still see his childhood home. His parents moved to Hinesburg, VT and then on to the Albany area of New York, where he grew up. He never ran for the presidency himself and retired at the end of his term in 1884. The so-called "Dude" President died in 1886. Chester A. Arthur - The Room
The woodworking in this room is of white oak, which was popular at the end of the 19th century as well. The moldings, columns and generally symmetrical layout are formal and neoclassical, suitable for a presidential visit. The library table with leather top is a Victorian walnut piece probably made in New York State around 1870. Persian rugs were very fashionable in Arthur's era. These rugs are from the border area between present day Iran and Turkmenistan. Toward the end of the 19th century, it was still unclear whether the wave of the future in lighting technology would tend toward gas or electricity. The wall fixtures reflect this ambiguity. They were originally designed to operate on either gas or electricity.

    United Church of Christ
Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
