Introduction
Very rarely, joint hypermobility is part of a more serious inherited illness, and we discuss this briefly at the end of this page.
What is joint hypermobility?
Women are often more supple than men of the same age. We become less supple as we get older. Certain racial groups are more supple than others. But even these rules may be broken. For example, the music hall contortionist, Norwood the Amazing Flexible Fellow, enjoyed a long career as a circus performer and could twist his body into amazing shapes until he was aged 80.
How is it measured?
Variations between one person and another make it difficult to measure hypermobility. The most popular system is the 'Carter and Wilkinson' score, modified by Professor Peter Beighton (see figure below). Give yourself one point for each of the five simple tests you can do. Do the tests on the arm and leg on both sides of your body, so the maximum score is nine. Most people score less than two. Only about one or two in a hundred healthy people score five or more out of nine. If you score highly, you have 'joint hypermobility'. In general you are likely to have the symptoms and problems we discuss in this booklet if you score five out of nine or more. (This does not mean that you will have the problems associated with the

Potassium nutrition and physiology around the concept that the low potassium always present in arthritis and usually in heart disease should be relieved. An exhaustive opinion on the subject.

ARTHRITIS TREATMENT by POTASSIUM, chapter I
by Charles Weber A series of articles about rheumatoid arthritis which discuss potassium nutrition and physiology.
The word "arthritis" = rheumatoid arthritis = RA in these articles (for a summation of potassium and copper nutrition, click here) OTHER CONTENTS II. Arthritis Research III. Arthritis and Potassium IV. Roles of Potassium in the Body V. Electrolyte regulation (sodium and potassium) ... When blood potassium is too high PREFACE We subscribe to the HONcode principles
of the Health On the Net Foundation It is my contention that potassium deficiency is either causing, or greatly making worse, rheumatoid arthritis, which I will shorten to "arthritis" in these articles. In assessing the possibility of this hypothesis people have little to go on. Virtually any textbook in the past would devote no more than a paragraph to potassium which would state that potassium is never deficient in the diet, or give one exception to the dozen or more known, or in some only under clinical conditions. The reason for this careless treatment of potassium is probably because potassium is present in almost all foods as grown in large quantities. Professionals think about it as if it were air or water. However even air and water can be deficient and if voluminous texts are not written about these deficiencies, it is because both deficiencies can be detected by our senses. Extremely powerful emotions and instincts impel people to correct these deficiencies immediately and at any cost. Potassium is odorless, colorless, and, in the usual concentrations, tasteless. There is no way to detect a deficiency and cell content can not even easily be assessed in the body by modern analytical procedures. Whole body cell content is virtually "invisible".

Thumb arthritis. The thumb is generally arthritis is a common term meaning inflammation of a joint. Although arthritis can apply
http://www.handsurgery.com/arthritis.html
Thumb Arthritis The thumb is generally considered to be the most important single digit in the hand. The basal joint of the thumb, or carpometacarpal joint, is made up of a carpal or wrist bone (trapezium) and the first or metacarpal bone of the thumb. This joint is very near the wrist and under the fleshy part of the thumb. It is subjected to an unusual amount of stress, as the thumb must be strong enough to counteract the force of four fingers put together. It has been calculated that one pound of pinch between the thumb and index finger will produce six-to-nine pounds of pressure at the basal joint of the thumb. The joint is held in position by the contours of its surface and by the ligaments and muscles surrounding the joint. Disruptions of the joint surface or the supporting ligaments can lead to slipping of the joint (subluxation) as well as pain and swelling. Arthritis is a common term meaning inflammation of a joint. Although arthritis can apply to more than 100 different diseases, the three most common types affecting the basal joint of the thumb are osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis), rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis (generally due to a fracture in the joint).
Symptoms of arthritis in the base of the thumb are pain and swelling about the thumb and wrist, particularly with grasp and pinch. These symptoms may appear the first thing in the morning and be present for a half hour or so before the thumb "loosens up." They might then subside throughout the middle of the day, only to return with a "dull aching" type of pain towards the end of the day or after vigorous use. A "bump" may appear at the joint, due to the shifting of the base of the metacarpal bone as the ligaments loosen through swelling.

Order Copies Online, Quantity: 50(limit) Arthritis Advice Arthritis is one of the most common diseases in this country. It affects millions of adults and half of all people age 65 and older. Arthritis causes pain and loss of movement. It can affect joints in any part of the body. It often is a chronic disease, which means that it can affect you over a long period of time. The more serious forms can cause swelling, warmth, redness, and pain. There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis and many different symptoms and treatments. Scientists do not know what causes most forms of arthritis. They understand some better than others. Common Forms of Arthritis The three most common kinds of arthritis in older people are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis ( OA ) is the most common type of arthritis in older people. It mostly affects cartilage—the tissue that cushions the ends of bones within the joint. OA often affects the hands and the large weight-bearing joints of the body, such as knees and hips. OA occurs when cartilage begins to fray, wear, and decay. In some cases, all of the cartilage may wear away between the bones of the joint, leaving bones that rub against each other. Symptoms can range from stiffness and mild pain that comes and goes, to severe joint pain. OA can cause:

Understanding Raynaud's Phenomenon

A chilling explanation.
Raynaud's Phenomenon can exist as a primary condition or in congruence with an underlying disease. Approximately 85% to 95% of patients with scleroderma and mixed connective tissue disease, plus one-third of patients with lupus, suffer with Raynaud's Phenomenon. The blood vessels in the fingers and toes are most commonly affected by Raynaud's Phenomenon. It is possible for the ear lobes, lips, and nose to also be affected. During "vasospastic" attacks of Raynaud's, the blood vessels in the affected area constrict. Attacks are often triggered by exposure to cold or by emotional stress. The resulting decreased blood supply caused by the vasospasm can cause skin discoloration and intense pain.

What is it?
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory illness . It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks normal tissue components as if they were invading pathogens. This illness affects about one percent of the world's population. The inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis primarily attacks the linings of the joints. However, the membranes lining the blood vessels, heart , and lungs may also become inflamed. The hands and feet are most often affected, but any joint lined by a membrane may be involved. The inflammation can be controlled by medication. If the inflammation is not controlled the joints may become deformed. Rheumatoid arthritis usually manifests itself over a period of a few months. However for some, the disease may appear over night. Rapid onset does not mean the individual is at greater risk of disease progression.
Rheumatiod Arthritis may have different affects on different people. Some individuals may experience extreme pain while others may not. Patients often suffer cycles of severe and light symptoms.

New CEO, new message
Arthritis Foundation ups awareness effort
As CEO of the Arthritis Foundation, Tino Mantella is trying to raise awareness of the problems caused by this disease By Thurston Hatcher CNN ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) If your exposure to arthritis is limited to those aspirin commercials where a senior winces while opening a jar, Tino Mantella has a message for you. Arthritis isn't just minor aches and pains. It doesn't just affect the elderly. And it can have crippling, even fatal, consequences. "We need to make sure people understand that this is a serious disease that affects all ages," said Mantella, the new chief executive officer of the Atlanta-based Arthritis Foundation. Since arriving earlier this summer, Mantella and the foundation have set out to heighten awareness of the public health risk posed by arthritis. "When you look at it in terms of the number of people affected and the kinds of costs passed to the country, it just deserves more attention," he said.
