... Disease Index Osteoporosis Osteoporosis Statistics
  • 28 million people are affected in the United States. Women are affected four times as often as men. One out of two women and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system. The bones lose density, become brittle and prone to fracture. It is the major cause of bone fractures in older people, especially postmenopausal women. What causes it? A certain amount of bone density is lost as a part of aging. During the mid-30s, everyone begins to lose very small amounts of bone. Bone loss accelerates at menopause, with some women losing up to 30% of bone mass in the first five years. There are certain risk factors that increase a person's chance of having osteoporosis. Some are unavoidable such as being a post-menopausal female, being thin or "small boned" and aging. However many are avoidable. Smoking, alcohol use, long term use of corticosteroids, lack of exercise and low intake of dietary calcium all can contribute to the development of osteoporosis.

Arthritis
What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a joint disorder featuring inflammation. A joint is an area of the body where two different bones meet. A joint functions to move the body parts connected by its bones. Arthritis literally means inflammation of one or more joints. Arthritis is frequently accompanied by joint pain. Joint pain is referred to as arthralgia. There are many forms of arthritis (over one hundred and growing). The forms range from those related to wear and tear of cartilage (such as osteoarthritis ) to those associated with inflammation resulting from an over-active immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis). Together, the many forms of arthritis make up the most common chronic illness in the United States. The causes of arthritis depend on the form of arthritis. Causes include injury (leading to osteoarthritis), abnormal metabolism (such as gout and

    My Victory Over Rheumatoid Arthritis
    By Loretta Godbout
I am writing this to share with you my recovery from rheumatoid arthritis by following a single reading by Edgar Cayce (951-1) which was published in There is a River
In 1959, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and I was crippled for the ensuing 8 years. The disease was so severe that my knees were greatly swollen and I was in constant pain. Suggested medical treatments consisted of scraping the bones, using long needles to draw off fluid from the joints, and joint replacement surgery, all of which did not hold promise of a permanent solution.
In my mind, I kept thinking that there had to be help, that the body could be healed and, after eight years, I found myself in a Woolworth's Dime Store in Long Beach, California. I saw a book on a revolving stand entitled, There is a River . I picked it up and then put it back saying to myself, "Loretta, you have books upon books, and you haven't read those you have, you don't need another one." Two weeks later, with the title ringing constantly in my mind, I returned to Woolworth's and bought the book. Once I began reading it, I couldn't put it down and I stayed up all night, eventually finding the case histories published in the back of the book.
There was one case of arthritis for a young girl of 18. I read that reading and immediately began making two lists, one for things to do and one for things to buy. I had difficulty finding everything I needed, especially Atomidine, and eventually I found it through Ingram's Pharmacy in Virginia Beach.

Panel looks at safety of arthritis drugs
By Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit The safety of two drugs used to treat arthritis will be discussed by the Food and Drug Administration's Arthritis Advisory Committee Friday. It's been three years since the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis was revolutionized with the introduction of Enbrel, a biologic drug that inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which plays a key role in promoting the disease process. A year later, a second TNF inhibitor called Remicade was introduced. "These have been a major advance in rheumatology," said Dr. John Klippel, medical director of the Arthritis Foundation, "probably the single major advance in at least 50 years. The only thing comparable was the introduction of corticosteroids in the 1950's." The committee will discuss ongoing safety concerns with TNF inhibitors to ensure product labels reflect what's been seen with large numbers of patients taking the drugs over a long period of time.
