Osteoarthritis, the most common form, develops as cartilage that cushions the joints wears away, leaving the ends of the bones rubbing against each other. The Arthritis Foundation says X-rays can find signs of osteoarthritis in most people over 60. The condition commonly begins to show up between ages 40 and 60, so most boomers are "right smack in the target," said Bill Roberts, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Minnesota and president-elect of the American College of Sports Medicine. Extra weight on the cartilage brings extra risk of the joint disease. "The simple explanation is, you're putting more biomechanical stress on the joints," said Kevin Fontaine, an assistant professor of rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Arthritis Information Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis Ankylosing Spondylitis Reading ... Exercise Diet Diet is an interesting and much debated subject. With so many forms of arthritis and an infinite number of metabolisms and chemical make-ups it is an area of great interest and the one most arthritis sufferers can take the most control of. The large pharmaceutical companies make little or no mention of diet in conjunction with thier drugs as a tool to reduce the symptoms of arthritis (or number of expensive medications required), but research has shown that certain foods and excessive weight can directly affect the severity of arthritis symptoms.. Doctors err on the side of caution, and in today's litigious society, who can blame them. Despite well known associations of excessive alcohol intake and poor diet with gout, wider use of diet as a weapon against other forms of arthritis is still viewed with some skepticism. Alternative health practicioners amongst others are convinced that diet can play a major part in the treatment of arthritis and can lead to significant reduction in painand other symptoms associated with most forms of the disiease..

That’s one of the most common questions people with arthritis ask. Because symptoms of arthritis can vary from day to day, it is natural to think that what you ate yesterday caused or reduced the pain you feel today. Researchers have looked at the roles diet may play in arthritis. There are some scientific reasons to think that the foods you eat could affect certain kinds of arthritis. Evidence shows that excessive weight and the type of diet you follow may influence symptoms of certain types of arthritis and related conditions.

However, nutritional research is still in its infancy as far as understanding how plant chemicals and antioxidants work individually and in concert to prevent and treat diseases such as arthritis. “It is known that phytonutrients and antioxidants have a role in minimizing inflammation,” explains Carol Henderson, PhD, a registered dietitian, “but we’re still in the discovery phase.” For example, researchers are still frequently discovering new phytochemicals and their potential impact on disease.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and I have found that by eliminating foods belonging to the nightshade family (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers and chili) I now no longer have the morning stiffness that I found quite painful. Apparently it is the solanine in these foods which caused the morning stiffness (for me anyway). However, these foods are some of my favorites and as I also have a gluten intolerance, I am struggling to find foods to eat. Is the solanine in a particular part of the vegetable or all through it? I have read that in potatoes, the solanine is found in the skin or if the potato has started to root, where the tuber is growing, so perhaps by carefully skinning the potato I can still eat it? Do you know where the solanine is in tomatoes, eggplants etc., could it be in the seeds or the skin of these vegetables, too? Many thanks for your help.
Also include tobacco and red peppers in your night shade list. The green peel, sometimes found on potatoes grown too close to the surface of the ground, contain higher amounts of solanine. Throw away potatoes with any green skin. Other vegetables seem to have solanine throughout. Solanine inhibits nerve impulses. I have not found research to support your connection between arthritis and eating foods high in solanine. However, if you feel better since eliminating the above foods, then continue. If you include a variety of other vegetables and starches in your diet, then you should not be too concerned about eliminating required nutrients.

, 1999 edition. The author appears to have the cause and control of most arthritic problems, including osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis. The cause is in the diet. The control is in the omission of the so-called nightshades from daily usage and monitoring two vitamins, as detailed in the book plus other minor precautions.
This book is based on over 100 years of documented research with the nightshades (drug plants) which are all closely related in the Solanaceae family of plants, some of which are highly toxic as the deadly nightshade. The family also includes tobacco. The book gives case histories with comments based on over 10,000 cooperators (estimated over 150,000 now on the diet) in the USA, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia, who have been on the NO-NIGHTSHADES Diet for 1 to 20 (or even more) years. Cooperators rigidly on the diet have recovered completely or shown marked improvement, some leaving canes, walkers, and wheelchairs. No dangerous drugs are used. Simply switch from one group of "accepted" foods to another equally nutritious but non-toxic group. People should live to 100 Years!

While there are over 100 different types of arthritis, they all have one thing in common. One or more of the food items listed will be an “allergy food” for the arthritis sufferer. The most common culprits are:
  • sugar
  • caffeine
  • citrus
  • salt
  • red meat
  • dairy products
  • additives
  • soft drinks
  • flour
  • nightshades (examples below)
  • eggplants
  • red peppers
  • tomatoes
  • white potatoes
  • tobacco
If you do eat any of these foods, pay attention to any reaction you might have in the next 24 hours. If you notice a reaction, you are indeed allergic to that food item.

Introduction
There is a lot of confusing advice on diet in magazines and books, and many food supplements which are claimed to help with arthritis. Some people end up taking expensive food supplements or eat elaborate diets which do not help, or may even be harmful. Often the same results can be achieved by simpler, cheaper methods. For example, it is better to get the vitamins you need from food, rather than take supplements. This booklet explains how the food you eat might affect your arthritis. It then advises you on the most sensible diet to follow and answers the most common questions which people ask about food and arthritis.
Can changing my diet really help my arthritis?
Yes. The right diet can certainly help some people with arthritis and rheumatism. For example, if you are overweight and suffer from arthritis, one of the most important things you can do to help yourself is to change the amount and type of food you eat. Recent research has also discovered several new links between arthritis and diet.

DIET AND ARTHRITIS: THE FACTS
THE effect of diet - or lack of it - on arthritis is always guaranteed to raise hackles among rheumatologists probably more than any other topic. But while many doctors dismiss its effects as negligible, many patients swear that cutting out this or that particular food has helped their arthritic symptoms. There's so much conflicting evidence, and the fact that a great deal of nonsense is written about how to "cure" arthritis through diet doesn't help. Dozens of books vie with each other to suggest yet another method of ridding sufferers of pain and inflammation - often contradicting each other. Most rheumatologists - trained to believe in conventional drug therapies above all else - are particularly unreceptive to the idea that diet can help with arthritic conditions, pointing out to the lack of scientific evidence that it actually works. And yet. The public's thirst for knowledge, and to find something other than drugs and medication that might just work for them, seems boundless. Admittedly, some of the claims of people to excitedly contact the ARC with news about what "cured" them veer towards to wacky and weird - (two prunes and a capful of gin is one of the more memorable) but others are serious and sincerely believe that cutting out acid, or other types of food, have genuinely been of help.
