Let's see what we can do for your staff! Thank you for all the positive feedback on last week's first issue using the new format. It makes it all worthwhile to me to hear from all of you! Here's to the many successful issues of the I.T. Newsletter still to come. Now that classrooms are ready and everyone is taking the Labor Day weekend off to close out their summer, I thought it might be an especially opportune time to deliver on my promise for an issue on digital clip art for teachers. I still have huge bound copies of clip art that I paid $10-$15 for ten years ago. I would photocopy a page of assorted characters, cut out the exact image I wanted, scotch tape it down to my mock up of my newsletter, and then head back to the photocopier. My how far we've come! Please start sending me ideas for future issues of the newsletter you would like to see. I'm always open to suggestions. In the mean time, enjoy these educational clip art links!

Teaching Ideas From Across America
Previous Page 1 of 7 Next Page
For this year's Annual IdeaBook, Teaching K-8 asked our subscribers across the country for their best teaching ideas. Their responses: A wonderful assortment of ideas, ranging from diaries kept by pet rocks to a model of the Emerald City of Oz (complete with yellow brick road). There are 27 teaching ideas here - one for each year Teaching K-8 has been publishing - and we think you'll find them all helpful.
Say It with Music (and Art, Too)
I love teaching language arts with the benefits of art and music. By designing art-related assignments, I'm able to "draw" out students who are good with their hands or feet or voice and can explain artistically the impact of a piece of literature on them.
Having the kids construct a board game to review a unit, create and perform a rap on a character, illustrate a favorite scene, or create a parable using a peer's personality produces some wonderfully creative and artistic reflections.
An event I hold twice a year is our Camden Coffee House, where I provide refreshments and the students share their artistic accomplishments which make our class and life so enjoyable.

This idea comes from Patrick Houlihan , English/Journalism instructor, who has used this questioning technique to draw from students what they already know intuitively about a subject and to frame the semester's work in terms of a critically questioning perspect ive.

Teaching Idea: Cooperative Controversies
Printer-friendly PDF version Working with instructors in various disciplines during the past year, we frequently heard that although students in discussion sections may not have difficulty stating their positions on issues, they often fail to voice their perspective when it contradicts someone else's. How do you encourage students to take a stand, teach them how to defend their position, and encourage them to work toward mutual understanding? With cooperative controversy you can set up a situation which clearly draws two opposing sides of a controversial issue; learners placed on both sides of the issue cooperate to reach a consensus. Working in groups, students first define positive or negative responses to a controversial question: for instance, "Are both evolution and creation science scientifically valid?" After stating their positions, groups plan and present the stance opposite to that originally taken. For the detailed procedure, see Table 1 below. You can have each student then submit a position paper stating current thinking and an explanation of how and why it changed after the readings and the cooperative controversy. To have a successful cooperative controversy in a fifty-minute period, you need to structure the class carefully and willingly take a monitoring role as you release control of the content to the students.

Enriching and extending pupils' experiences Teachers need to plan to develop the breadth and depth of pupils' experiences, and the quality of their responses and outcomes. In each of the following aspects and more, teachers need to be both demanding and supportive. Pupils need high expectations, coupled with continued and active support to enable them to respond to the challenge.
Broadening knowledge, skills and understanding
Teachers need to plan to develop the breadth of pupils' experiences in: exploring and developing ideas
by engaging them in looking at and talking about a diverse range of visual stimuli; by confronting pupils with issues and concepts that encourage them to consider and reapply ways of thinking to their own ideas and feelings investigating and making art, craft and design
by ensuring a good balance between the range of processes and techniques taught and the choice and variety of materials used; by revisiting and reapplying the skills acquired to their own ideas and intentions; by testing and experimenting with a wide range of materials; by exploring the potential of mixing media evaluating and developing work
by helping pupils to recognise that there is no one right or wrong interpretation or representation; by considering alternative solutions; by reflecting on the approaches of others and making connections between their own ideas, the context of their work and the diversity of art, craft and design from different times and places.

Here's the first of a series of articles in which we'll try to give you practical ideas on making math fun for your kids.
Dear Visitor, In this and other pages we'll try to give suggestions on teaching math, for both teachers and parents. This first page has some general ideas, and other pages will illustrate the general point with some very specific ideas. Children are like the rest of us: they tend to resist anything that looks like work, and to be beguiled by anything that amuses them. For many kids, math looks like work. So how can you a teacher or parent make math fun, amusing, and entertaining? Here are some suggestions to make math beguiling both for you and for your students. FIRST: spend a short time each class period (perhaps 5 minutes) on something mathematical which is puzzling or fascinating. For example, ask a perplexing question at the end of one class, and answer it at the beginning of the next. Here are some examples in each of seven categories:
  • Puzzles. What's the fewest number of colors needed to paint any map, if the rule is "no two countries sharing a boundary can be the same color"? Find a series of seven consecutive numbers none of which are prime.
