Sculpture Department Sculpture simply means the creation of objects, using various kinds of materials. The objects that surround us in daily life are all creations with specific functions. The sculptor imagines new objects for no other purpose than self-expression.
In Kyoto Seika University`s Department of Sculpture, students initially work towards proper understanding of the mechanisms and techniques involved in creating a piece of sculpture, and their perception of color and shape is developed. The relationships between person and object, and object to object, are analyzed in both a psychological sense and a physical sense, to provide better understanding of this art form through both subjective and objective observation.
By exploring the propertes of many different materials, a variety of themes and motives, and by gaining broad personal experience, students discover working and conceptual methods most comfortable to them in developing their subjective imagination. Living in our highly technological world, how do you feel about personal creativity? Do you have original ideas? If so, in sculpture you`ll find opportunities to create new, unprecedented forms of artwork, and to use materials arising from new technological advances in addition to familiar materials from the natural world. Our students find ways to create works of art relating to this modern world not only in the material sense but also in a mental and spiritual sense, works that are highly innovative in the field of sculpture.

Book: Concrete Handbook for Artists: Technical Notes for Small-scale Objects More information? I have found only a few good books on using concrete and cement as an art material. Your input and suggestions are increasing the list. Concrete Handbook for Artists: Technical Notes for Small-scale Objects , is my own new book. It's based on this web site but has a lot more information. 135 pages, 7.5" X 9", black and white photos and line drawings. Paperback binding (lay-flat). ISBN 0-9730223-0-2. Initially it is only available through this web site. Cost is $26.95 USD or $34.95 CAD plus shipping. More information? Top of the list for other books would be Making Concrete Garden Ornaments (former title: Creating With Concrete : Yard Art, Sculpture, and Garden Projects ) by Sherri Warner Hunter, Lark Books, 2002, ISBN: 1579903185 [order from amazon.com] . (And I'm not just saying this because some of my work is in the book...) The book has excellent instructions for different types of concrete for many different techniques: casting, armatures, using foam, carving, surface treatments. There are also many projects to follow about half the book with excellent photographs. Hunter, a Tennessee sculptor, has really done her technical research, and she's got the right idea in using different mixes for different purposes. This book is all you need to start and continue to learn with. I recommend it highly.

Hundreds of Chainsaw Carvers from across the country and around the world meet in Ridgway each year to share ideas and raise money for Make-A-Wish and the Ridgway YMCA. Come and join us for this wonderful event! Life Exceeding the Dream At the very least, we make each other think. At our very best, we inspire one another to common heroics and a fresh, inspired look at our own creativity and human potential. We carry the responsibility for the gift that we have been given. Our expressions in wood reach out and in, farther than we imagine. From the twinkle of an old man’s eye in Japan to the smile of a child in Europe, we touch them with our gift. We have more opportunity to express ourselves than any artists in history. This year’s Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous was no exception to this endeavor, and we should all be proud of our personal accomplishments at the 2004 Rendezvous. Without a doubt, we raise the bar each year with the statistics that are generated - 200 carvers, an estimated 20,000 people and a $47,000 auction with top bid at $2,700 are some pretty good statistics. The quality and size of the carvings goes up each year, and as well, more carvings hit the $1,000 mark.

http://www.nica.org/education/faqs.html
Frequently Asked Questions
This section answers a few questions that ice sculptors hear on a regular basis. The questions are answered by Dawson List, NICA Website Chairman and member of the Board of Directors. "Is that ice?!" This is a surprisingly common question. People might be thinking, "Who would be crazy enough to put all that work into something that's going to melt?" Perhaps they assume that a carving is made from glass or plastic. It's often amusing to witness the moment when someone realizes that the sculpture is made of ice and is melting before their eyes. "Did you use a mold to make that?" Most ice sculptures are carved from solid blocks of ice. Usually, a lot of effort goes into making sure that the ice is as clear as possible, from using premium quality crystal-clear blocks to taking the time to remove defects in the ice. Sculptures that come from ice molds are often not as clear and don't have the clean cuts that carved sculptures do. Some new ice molding methods, however, result in remarkably clear pieces. Often, however, ice sculptures are heavily customized, so it's far more efficient to carve it rather than go to the trouble of making a mold that might be used only once. "I've seen ice sculptures on a cruise I was on. Did you used to work on a cruise ship?"

Fretwork
Carving is the branch of applied art and sculpture technique. Wood, bone, horn, amber, plastic or any other material that can be carved, cut, scraped or smoothed with a knife, a hammer, a chisel or a handsaw. Using carving technique various articles can be created: small and large sculptures, the decorations of sculptures, wooden decoration of the interior and exterior of buildings, household utensils, adornments. Articles carved from wood can be decorated with inlaid work, can be polished, varnished, painted in various colours or gilded. Carvings from bone and horn are usually only polished. Carving decor usually has the figures of human beings and animals, masks and floral arrangements. It is due to the geographical position of Lithuania that wood as a material for creating folk art flourished. Since early times wooden household articles dominated in Lithuania. Working tools, household articles, sledges, carts with harness, furniture, architectural details were being carved. In the course of time carving principles characteristic of the Lithuanians were formed, i.e., precision of performance, moderation, the completeness of composition, the usage of meaningful symbols. With the change in living conditions many of these objects acquired other applications. Their function became only decorative - as souvenirs. That way they have been preserved from disappearance. The people want to revive the symbolic meaning of the ornaments that their collective memory contains.

TIBETAN ART
We will categories Tibetan art into three parts: (I) Flat (2-dimensional) Paintings which include `Thangka', Fresco, Wooden Tablet and Sand Painting, (II) Solid (3-dimensional) Objects which include Bronze, Clay Sculpture, Clay Modeling, Wooden Carving, Stone Carving, Ritual Objects, Butter Sculpture, Mask and Cazha, and (III) Costume. I: Flat Paintings. (a) Thangka.
The thangkas are painted or embroidered images rendered on cloth, silk or paper which is mounted on a cloth backing and may be rolled up like a scroll when not hung. A thangka composed of strung pearls is kept in Dradrug Monastery in Shannan. Thangka is a special art of Tibet. The material used for thangka is linen cloth or coarse woolen fabric or silk or paper. The cloth needs to be prepared first and then the artist works out the sketches of the portraits with charcoal sticks. The drawing usually begins at the center. Colouring comes last. The pigments used come from non-transparent minerals and plants such as malachite and cinnabar. They are mixed with animal glue and ox bile to make the lustre stay. There are many schools of painting which may be classified as the Eastern Tibetan, the Middle Tibetan, the Western Tibetan. The Eastern Tibetan was the oldest and heavily influenced by those of the Han nationality. This style is individualistic and probably too free for the taste of Buddhists. The Western school began after the Indian master Atisa came to Tibet in the 11th century (Song Dynasty). Atisa brought Nepalese painters to work according to the rigid rules. The Middle Tibetan School is an integration of the above two.

http://www.inuit.com/Archives/connections/Connections.htm
To view the collection, please click on the image above. The traditional Inuit view of the world is one of intrinsic connections between all things. Whether they are the integral ones of family ties, as exemplified by the sensitive portrayals of mother and child, or those connections to nature depicted in the dynamic representations of the hunt, or simply to the animals themselves. Inuit art in general, is all about connections.
The family unit has always been at the core of Inuit life and continues to be a vital element that provides a secure frame of reference for the individual as the northern Canadian communities experience dramatic and rapid changes to their lifestyle. Images of mothers with their children, are testimony to the strong bond that is shared, whether between humans or animals.
The Inuit are also intimately linked to the spirit world and images of transformations convey their sense of awe at this mysterious aspect of life. Invisible threads spin outward from every inhabitant of the temporal and ethereal worlds and it is this sense of connection that the artists presented in this collection have eloquently captured in stone.
