History Architecture Manuscript Paintings ... Art of Book Sculpture By Dr.Dickran Kouymjian Stone Sculpture and Relief Carving nevitably in a country with an architectural tradition in stone dating back to Urartian times, the craftsmen who so carefully carved blocks of stones for walls, fortresses, and sanctuaries had acquired the skill to sculpt stone as relief decorations for buildings or as independent works of art. Little sculpture has survived, however, from the pre-Christian period because of the excessive zeal of St. Gregory and the newly convert royal court of Armenia in destroying all vestiges associated with earlier pagan religions. The major exception is a series of extremely large carved monolithic stones found in various parts of Armenia and often associated with water sources. They resemble large tailless whales. On them are fish-like designs, but they are know as vishap-k'ar, dragon stones. They date from the second and first millennia B.C. Excavations have uncovered a miscellany of sculptures from the Artaxiad and the Arsacid periods, roughly the second century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. The famous bronze head of Aphrodite, found at Satala near Erzinjan, now in the British Museum, or the small female torso in white marble dug up at Armavir, testify to the popularity of Hellenistic sculpture in Armenia. Other stone heads, anonymous but no doubt of Armenian nobility, display a static pose far removed from the classical style. Nearly a dozen boundary markers of king Artaxias I (Artashes) from the early second century B.C. have also been uncovered in various areas of Armenia, but these are more important for their Aramaic inscriptions than for their art. The temple of Garni from the first century A.D. offers an enormous repertory of sculpted lion heads, acanthus friezes and geometric and floral reliefs associated with the Ionic order of Hellenistic temple architecture.

X3D WORLD Education Art Art FEATURE: Sculpture in 3D by Ruben Torrejon if(!isOld) document.write('Loading...'); Sculpture in 3D A sculpture is a work of three-dimensional art. It is perhaps the oldest form of art, as crude prehistoric sculptures carved from bones and ivory far outdate the earliest known cave drawings and paintings. Sculpture can be created using just about any raw material (the most common are clay, marble, bronze, wood, and ivory) and employing just about any technique. Some common techniques include chiseling marble with a hammer and chisel, pouring molten bronze into a mold and carving wood with a knife.
The purposes of creating sculpture vary greatly. Sculpture may be created with a practical or purely aesthetic goal in mind depending upon the creator. A sculpture can be a work of art without any "purpose" such as an expressive shape. It can be a work of art with a very specific purpose, such as the bust or a full body likeness of an individual (or more exactly, the replica mold of a person's body part, such as a baby's foot). Sculpture can also be an adornment to something practical, such as the carved handle of a knife or a gargoyle chipped into the side of a marble arch. But usually, whatever the medium and whatever the purpose in mind, a sculpture is created with the intent to embody an idea or an ideal the creator wants to express in a three-dimensional medium.

You are presented here with very unique pieces of Canadian art, hand madeby an artist experienced in the arts of sculpture, casting and carving.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/ve3jji/
The artist: Jim Cosgrove is a self taught and seasoned sculptor/carver who produces this artwork from his home in Windsor Ontario, Canada. This web site and a small display in Lion's Head Ontario are the outlets for his fine presentations to the public. Jim's disability may limit the quantity but it certainly does not limit the quality of the art he produces. During his years, Jim has worked with welding, metal sculpting, the forming and casting of metals, wood carving and sculpting and carving in soapstone. Having produced various pieces in metal, stone and wood, he has decided to concentrate his efforts into working with soapstone, alabaster and serpentine. Recently retired, with an engineering background, the geometric and free forms possible in this medium are of special interest to an artist who enjoys putting his heart and soul into his work. By spending the time to thoroughly research his carving subjects, Jim ensures that clients will obtain some important background with their purchase. Jim's Scottish/French ancestry and his love of wildlife are reflected in these fine carvings and sculptures. A.K.A. VA3OS or VE3JJI, Jim is an Amateur Radio operator (Ham), a much cherished and long-time hobby which fills in the idle hours when he is taking a break from sculpting, carving, teaching his grandchildren about fishing and generally making a lot of noise and dust outside. See Jim's answer to art in amateur radio in the 'CW keys' page.

Carving for Mathematical Understanding of Surfaces
Cliff Long It was almost thirty years ago that I carved a bug on a band (patterned after a sculpture seen as a boy at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago). It was carved from a solid piece of white pine, to illustrate that a Moebius band is one-sided. Once around a circle and the bug is upside down; twice around and it is right-side up again. Such a band (or surface) is called non-orientable. This band also has only one edge and is called a spanning surface of that edge, which is itself homeomorphic to a circle (or unknot) in three space. Only recently, upon seeing a computer stereo image of a spanning surface for a trefoil knot (or three-knot) in an article on heart arrythmia [1], I again resorted to a wood carving to gain an understanding of the surface - this time an orientable one. This carving reminded me to return to the Topological Picture Book by George Francis [2], and later to the book Knots , by Livingston [3] for more recent information on knots and spanning surfaces. In the meantime I was teaching third semester calculus, where we were encountering the Frenet frame determined via the tangent, velocity, and acceleration vectors to a curve in 3-D (such as our trefoil knots). Hence, it seemed natural to

Carve a Free-Form Sculpture
Around the middle of the last century, sculpture began to evolve or change into what we know today as modern sculpture. Artists began working with new materials and "invading" solid forms with voids or holes. Henry Moore, one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century, was a pioneer in stressing the importance of negative space. Strongly influenced by his environment, he was fascinated by the caves which occurred in the hillsides and cliffs of his native England. To Moore, a hole or negative space was as important as solid form, and he often used hollow cavities in his work. Another distinguishing characteristic of modern sculpture is the artist's choice of subject matter. Before the mid-1800's, sculpture was created to represent people such as religious figures or royalty. Sometimes artists would model or carve the likenesses of animals. While modern sculpture can be representational, the subject is just as likely to be abstract. Much of Henry Moore's work falls into this category. Two of the artist's sculptures are located in Columbus, Indiana. One of them, Large Arch , stands in front of our public library, and it has served as the focal point of the library plaza since 1971.

During the Weimar period, the Bauhaus sustained two separate sculpture workshops for stone and wood-carving. At first, Johannes Itten was in charge of both in the role of master of form; Oskar Schlemmer succeeded him in 1922. The sculptor Josef Hartwig, who was to become famous principally for his purist Bauhaus chess set, was master craftsman. Well in accordance with the programmatic guidelines of the Bauhaus tending towards architecture, three-dimensional work for building was the main focus of the workshop. In 1921/22, the wood carving workshop produced reliefs and wooden sculptures for the house designed by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer for the entrepreneur Adolf Sommerfeld in Berlin. The workshop for stone sculpture created wall decorations for both school buildings in the context of the large Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the Summer of 1923.
Josef Hartwig, Chess set, 1924, Cherry wood, natural and black coloration Of the free sculpture created in both workshops parallel to these commissions, only little has survived. A good example for these works is the "Architectural Sculpture" by Otto Werner. Its massive structure, together with the complex spatial layering of cubic elements, are reminiscent of contemporary forms from "New Building", but evoke at the same time associations of a statuary human figure. The influence of Oskar Schlemmer is obvious: his sculptures and reliefs also present a blending of architectural and figurative elements. Whereas in Weimar the emphasis of the workshop lay on free artistic work, Dessau concentrated more on educational aspects. The "Sculpture workshop", set up in 1925 by Joost Schmidt, offered in analogy to the
