ART AND ARCHITECTURE More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers began to teem with lifefirst the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. From Sumeria have come examples of fine works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuli. Of the many portraits produced in this area, some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble, others, such as the one in the Louvre in Paris, are cut in gray-black diorite. Dating from about 2400 BC, they have the smooth perfection and idealized features of the classical period in Sumerian art. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex. Clay was the Sumerians' most abundant material. Stone, wood, and metal had to be imported. Art was primarily used for religious purposes. Painting and sculpture was the main median used. Marble Statues The famous votive stone/ marble sculptures from Tell Asmar represent tall, bearded figures with huge, staring eyes and long, pleated skirts. Enlarged eyes were found on many statues The tallest figure is about 30 inches in height. He represents the god of vegetation. The next tallest represents a mother goddess-mother goddesses were common in many ancient cultures. They were worshipped in the hope that they would bring fertility to women and to crops. Sonya Moran Born in London, England in 1963, Sonya studied art throughout high school before going on to complete a nursing degree. Seemingly satisfied with this safe career option, Sonya worked as a nurse for 6 years after completing her studies. In 1986 Sonya took an extended break from nursing to travel, and eventually made her way to a popular tourist destination, Hamilton Island, Australia. There she met Foot Young, an American Sculptor. Entranced by the living nature of marble sculpture, Sonya decided to stay on an re-examine her earlier passion for art, now that such an exciting medium had presented itself. For four years she worked and studied with Foot, learning the fundamentals of carving form in driftwood and marble, as well as learning mould making techniques. Sonya started exhibiting her work in the Hamilton Island Gallery the year she arrived. Installation of this 9 foot tall fountain was finished in August 1996. It is built of 92 pieces of stone, and the carving was completed over a 10 month period. Carved from two types of limestone, Indiana Limestone and a golden brown Minnesota limestone, two bronze frogs sit on the edge of the pool spouting water. Water shoots out the top, cascades down, and flows from the mouths of the three lions. The central part of the fountain features a lion; water spouts from its mouth. On the bowl above its head rests a bundle of four Romanesque columns, topped by another bowl. This fountain is located in the gardens of Driehaus Capital Management at 25 E. Erie St. If you're visiting Chicago, walk by and take a look! A Monument to Mayor Harold Washington, Social Security Center, 600 W. Madison St., Chicago. You've never carved a plaster sculpture before? Well, you'd be in the company of these first level students, most non-art experienced, who found it a completely absorbing, surprising, and very satisfactory 1st time sculpture adventure. To be honest, there were some frustrating momentslike when parts of the work would break off, and then having to modify the design and keep on going. But it was challenge met with determination and the discovery that one could adapt to a needed restructure and find it was pleasing as well as workable. GETTING STARTED You'll need the following for each person: Plaster of Paris, small, empty milk carton-about half filled with cold water, a paint stirring stick (preferably with holes in it),a teaspoon, bowl with plaster powder, and a newspaper covered area. Add teaspoons of plaster powder to the water in the milk carton sifting it evenly. Continue until there is a "little mountain" that rises in the middle. Sprinkle in a few more teaspoons around the sides. Stir the mixture slowly with the stick without lifting it from the carton to keep as many air bubbles out as possible. Check the stick several times to see if any lumps appear at the end of it. Stop when the stick shows only a smooth, stirred mixture.

American scrimshaw dates back to at least 100-200 AD in North America. Long before the sailors of the 1800's popularized the art form. Not wanting to simply discard the teeth and bones of animals hunted for food, native cultures invented an entirely new style of art that would later come to be known as Scrimshaw, one of just a handful of truly original American art forms. While other cultures around the world certainly worked in ivory and bone, the style of North American cultures and that of the Yankee sailors who followed were uniquely their own, making scrimshaw a traditionally American art form. Today, Scrimshaw is still practiced by master scrimshanders and their work is highly sought after and collected. Perhaps the most noted collector was President John F. Kennedy, who even displayed many of his most cherished pieces of ivory scrimshaw in the Oval Office of the White House. No animals are harmed as the result of work by responsible scrimshanders. The work seen here is all done on shed antler, bone, horn, legal elephant and most often, fossil ivories that can be as much as 10,000 to 50,000 years old or older. The fossil ivory used here is from the ice age giant, the Wooly Mammoth, or ancient fossil mastodon or walrus tusk, making it ecologically ideal for the traditional 14th wedding anniversary gift of ivory. Horn scrimshaw is most often seen on black powder hunting horns. The rare and beautiful woods used by the artist are primarily Ebony from harvest farms on the island of Madagascar and equally magnificent Ironwoods from the African continent.
