L ibrary O f A nnotated F ilm S chools Welcome to L.O.A.F.S! If you're thinking of going to film school, you need an insider's opinion on what going to film school is actually like. The Library of Annotated Film Schools (LOAFS) not only provides a comprehensive listing of film schools' web sites from around the world, it also offers something that the film schools themselves do not reveal: honest, telling reviews and shared experiences from the film students themselves. Is shelling out the tens of thousands of dollars that many schools charge a worthwhile investment? Are the two or three years for a graduate education in film worth it? Many filmmakers confess that your money and time is better spent actually making a film than attending film classes. Others feel that the hard lessons they learned in film school as well as the contacts they made were invaluable. And what of those three-day filmmaking classes that are advertised in film magazines? Are they worth it? These pages reveal the insights of those students who have already attended a variety of different film schools. If you've had an experience with a film school, we *NEED* you to jot down your experience and send it to LOAFS.

Judge ends court oversight of W. Va. schools
Story Tools
CHARLESTON, West Virginia (AP) A judge has ended 20 years of court oversight of West Virginia's schools, saying the state is making an honest effort to narrow the funding gap between rich and poor districts. While lawmakers never made the sweeping changes he envisioned, state Circuit Judge Arthur Recht praised a 1998 law that offers more money to poorly performing schools, and he said the system should be given a chance to work. He said the governor and Legislature now recognize they have a legal and moral commitment to provide a "thorough and efficient" education for all of West Virginia's 280,000 public school students. West Virginia has routinely received poor grades for education. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education in 2000 gave the state a "D" in student preparation for college and participation in higher education. About 77 percent of the state's adults that year had a high school diploma, compared with 84 percent nationally. The case began after parents complained in a 1975 lawsuit that youngsters in poor districts were getting shortchanged by the state's school funding system and were falling behind.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Soft drinks should be eliminated from schools to help tackle the nation's obesity epidemic and pediatricians should work with their local schools to ensure that children are offered healthful alternatives, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. In a new policy statement, the academy says doctors should contact superintendents and school board members and "emphasize the notion that every school in every district shares a responsibility for the nutritional health of its students." Some schools already limit contracts with vendors of soft drinks and fast foods, though the soft drink industry has fought efforts by some states to mandate such restrictions. While some schools rely on funds from vending machines to pay for student activities, the new policy says elementary and high schools should avoid such contracts, and that those with existing contracts should impose restrictions to avoid promoting overconsumption by kids.
