Can Public Schools Be Religiously Neutral?
Paul G. Kussrow and Loren Vannest
The Supreme Court ordered that all religious activities be removed from the public schools (Engel v. Vatale, l962) and in subsequent years strengthened its decision through further restrictions (Abington v. Schempp, l963; Stone v. Gramm, l980; Graham v. Central, l985; Jager v. Douglas, l989). Who can argue against neutrality? We who have a fundamental belief in God can point to the significant decline in standardized test scores, increase in student pregnancy, and violence in our schools since the Court's l962 decision. But the question remains, and has the Court been able to remove religion from the public schools or has only certain types of traditional (God based) religion been removed while non-God religions fill the vacuum? Is a religiously neutral public school education an oxymoron? Can individuals who think and work in what some term government sponsored institutions (public schools) truly be neutral and teach in what others hope will be religiously neutral zones?
What is Truth?

SEE WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT SCHOOL VIOLENCE Message Board I am T.J. O'Rourke and a teacher of ten years. I've seen violence and illegal activity in schools as well as bad discipline which keeps others from learning. One thing I've discovered is, too often, violence and behavior is ignored or even covered up. I've decided to start a book to share my experiences. My hope is to publish a book on school violence and discipline problems and then a follow-up derived from experiences of others. About Me My experience includes Middle School, homeless shelter, and detention center. Most of my teaching has been in middle-school but I have taught "everything" since I began. I am married with three young children.

Tuesday, March 23, 1999; Page Z12 School principals in the District of Columbia who are struggling to find money for extras such as school proms, bus tokens for needy students and even replacement books have a new source to turn to: the Coca-Cola Co. Six months ago, the District replaced its school-by-school soda vending arrangements with a citywide exclusive contract with Cokejoining a growing number of school districts across the nation trying to turn their vending machines into cash machines. "This contract is a godsend," said Jon Peterson, deputy director of procurement for the D.C. Public Schools. "This is our first District-wide soft drink contract, and it will be a very valuable thing for us." But vending machine bonanzas for high schools, middle schools and even elementary schools have also produced an increasingly worried backlash from health advocates.
