161. Mesoamerican Archaeoastronomy Bibliography
Bibliographical companion to a Mayan Archaeoastronomy course run by Tulane University.

Selected Bibliographical References on MESOAMERICAN ARCHAEOASTRONOMY
Harvey M. Bricker, Jeb J. Card, and Katrina Kubicek, Compilers
June 1996
The database that can be accessed here started as a bibliographical reference list compiled originally for the use of the members of the seminar on Maya archaeoastronomy (Anthropology 725) offered in the Department of Anthropology at Tulane University during the Spring 1996 semester and co-directed by Professors Harvey M. Bricker and Victoria R. Bricker. Because of its association with the seminar, the list focused on the Maya, but works encountered dealing with other Mesoamerican cultures and regions were included. No attempt was made to compile a list of sources on Mesoamerican ethnoastronomy, but some titles of obvious interest to archaeoastronomy were included. Some works of general utility to the archaeoastronomer (eclipse tables, methodological studies, etc.) were included as well even though they have no specific reference to Mesoamerica. With a few exceptions, unpublished studies were excluded.

THE SHROUD OF TURIN RESEARCH AT McCRONE RESEARCH INSTITUTE
The Shroud of Turin
According to Dr. Walter McCrone and his colleagues at McCrone Associates, the 3+ by 14+ foot cloth depicting Christ's crucified body is an inspired painting produced by a Medieval artist just before its first appearance in recorded history in 1356. The faint sepia image is made up of billions of submicron pigment particles (red ochre and vermilion) in a collagen tempera medium. Dr. McCrone determined this by polarized light microscopy in 1979. This included careful inspection of thousands of linen fibers from 32 different areas (Shroud and sample points) , characterization of the only colored image-forming particles by color, refractive indices, polarized light microscopy, size, shape, and microchemical tests for iron, mercury, and body fluids. The paint pigments were dispersed in a collagen tempera (produced in medieval times, perhaps, from parchment). It is chemically distinctly different in composition from blood but readily detected and identified microscopically by microchemical staining reactions. Forensic tests for blood were uniformly negative on fibers from the blood-image tapes.
There is no blood in any image area, only red ochre and vermilion in a collagen tempera medium. The red ochre is present on 20 of both body- and blood-image tapes; the vermilion only on 11 blood-image tapes. Both pigments are absent on the 12 non-image tape fibers.

But this is mere temporizing. If we wish courageously to pursue the question, we must, of course ask next where God comes from. And if we decide this to be unanswerable, why not save a step and decide that the origin of the universe is an unanswerable question? Or, if we say that God has always existed, why not save a step and conclude that the universe has always existed?" Cosmos p.257 "What do you do when you are faced with several different gods each claiming the same territory? The Babylonian Marduk and the Greek Zeus was each considered master of the sky and king of the gods. You might decide that Marduk and Zeus were really the same. You might also decide, since they had quite different attributes, that one of them was merely invented by the priests. But if one, why not both? And so it was that the great idea arose, the realization that there might be a way to know the world without the god hypothesis...." Cosmos p.175-176

    Content Analysis and Qualitative Research
    Overview
Content analysis is the manual or automated coding of documents, transcripts, newspapers, or even of audio of video media to obtain counts of words, phrases, or word-phrase clusters for purposes of statistical analysis. Typically the researcher creates a dictionary which clusters words and phrases into conceptual categories for purposes of counting. Various constraints may filter the count, such as the constraint that one concept be or not be within so many words of another concept. Coding and statistical analysis is covered by Hodson (1999). A standard introduction to content analysis is Weber (1990). Related information is contained in the sections on case study research and on ethnography

    • ATLAS.ti is software for text analysis and model building. It handles graphical, audio, and video data files as well as text. With this package one can code and/or annotate text or media segments in a variety of ways, search/select segments by code (using proximity, Boolean, or semantic thesaurus methods), create hotlinks connecting segments, and display relationships among segments in diagrammatic format. An automatic coding mode codes all similar segments according to defined patterns. Video segments can be as small as frames and likewise audio segments can be detailed. Network diagrams, created with the built-in semantic network editor, can be exported to graphics and word processing packages and a built-in HTML generator creates web pages for sharing work with collaborators. Visually, annotations and links are made in a margin area of the computer display. Data can be generated in SPSS format for further analysis. However

    The Mysterious Origins of Man:
The Oronteus Finaeus Map of 1532
    Paul Heinrich

[Last Update: June 6, 1996] The segment of The Mysterious Origins of Man concerning the Oronteus Finaeus Map of 1532 starts out with Charlton Heston stating that Dr. Charles Hapgood [author of Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings , Hapgood (1966, 1979)], made a "startling discovery" while he was combing through the map room at the Library of Congress. MOM then quotes Dr. Hapgood as saying: As my eyes fell upon the southern hemisphere of a world map drawn by a Oronteus Finaeus in 1532, I had the instant conviction that I had found here a truly authentic map of the real Antarctica. Unfortunately, this conviction likely so prejudiced his ideas concerning the Oronteus Finaeus Map that he was unable to evaluate it objectively. Once Dr. Hapgood knew he had an authentic map of Antarctica, he proceeded to overlooked, as is later explained, many serious problems with this map being an accurate, although possibly still authentic, map of Antarctica. In MOM, Mr. Graham Hancock stated:

THE JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA D ASTRONOMIE DU CANADA Vol. 83, No.6 December 1989 Whole No. 621 EDWIN HUBBLE 1889-1953 By Allan Sandage The Observatories of the Carnegie Institution, Pasadena, California, U.S.A. (Received September 22, 1989) Hubble's role. This year marks the centennial of the birth of Edwin Hubble. There can be no doubt that future historians, writing about the scientific advances of this age will describe the 20th century as epoch-changing in giving us the first correct view of how the universe is organized. The principal cosmological problem of discovering the large scale content of the universe was solved observationally between 1920 and 1936. Hubble was a major figure in this development. Knowledge that galaxies mark the space and provide the means to measure it was gained by the first convincing analysis of new data on the nature of the nebulae - knowledge that came directly from the sky rather than by dialectic discussion or revelation. In Hubble's time, the centre of observational work on the new astrophysics, and later on what we know as cosmology, was the Mount Wilson Observatory. The two largest telescopes in the world were there and could be regularly used on these problems. With his appointment to the Mount Wilson staff in 1919, Hubble had continuing access to both the 60-inch and the 100-inch Hooker reflectors.
