antasy art is about wonder and enchantment, about the impossible, the stuff of fairytales, folklore, magic, dreams and mysteries - but when it's 'light' fantasy, it deals with these themes in a lighthearted, perhaps even a humorous, way. There is no need, as in science fiction art, to make sense, to be rationale, to extrapolate from what is known. Any sort of flights of fantasy are possible, including those made with the aid of dragons, fairies, mermaids and unicorns. Fanciful animals and characters, those drawn from classical tales as well as modern ones, are acceptable as subject matter. In 'dark' fantasy, the supernatural world, mystery, magic and classically 'gothic' elements combine to make sometimes inscrutable, sometimes dreamlike, visions come alive. At its darkest, such fantasy art can be the stuff of nightmares, but since fantasy art covers such a wide range of subjects and styles, it's the execution - the way the subject matter is treated, rather than just the subject matter alone - that makes some images darker rather than 'lighter'. The artistic influences most often found include the works of Brueghel, Bosch and Escher. Arthurian legend, medieval symbolism, vampires, monsters, images that are folkloric or literary in origin, all can be fearful or frightening, but in 'dark' fantasy they are also entertaining, poetic, beautiful, provocative, and emotionally involving. Sometimes, it's hard to draw the line between 'light' and 'dark' fantasy; what may be beautiful and lighthearted to one viewer may seem merely saccharine to another. You must be the judge!

So why not revamp your walls with some original works of art? Don't worry if your efforts at painting in school weren't destined for the notice board. An adult class is a totally different experience (your nearest neighbour won't feel the urge to put green in your hair, for example) and keeping clean won't be the only skill you will learn. On a practical level, your teacher should impart the basics of using line, colour, texture, light and space, while at the same time encourage your creativity and help you with your composition skills. Constructive criticism will also play an important part of your course. One of the most important decisions you can make when you start painting is what medium to use - the main paint types are oils, acrylics and watercolours. (You could take a course that deals with all three but most people prefer to concentrate on one at a time, to perfect the correct technique.) Oil paints are the choice for those who like to take their time, as they dry slowly, allowing you plenty of time to work and blend colours. However, this does also mean that you may have to wait for a number of months before your painting is ready to be varnished. Oils are good for producing texture in paintings - they are thick enough to be applied with a palette knife, yet they can also be diluted with white spirit to produce a wash.

Dave Corcoran - Art These pages are on my artistic interests. These divide into the (overlapping) areas of painting I have painted in oils and acrylics (off and on) since about 1974, when I was 14. Now I mainly use fast-drying alkyd oil paint, ("Griffin" from Winsor and Newton) which I strongly recommend as they are rapid-drying (overnight) and, used with alkyd resin medium ("Liquin") avoid the linseed oil and turpentine odour associated with conventional oils. I moved on to these in preference to acrylics, as alkyds are slow-enough drying to allow blending within a painting session, and handle just like conventional oils, whereas acrylics are too fast drying for my preferred painting technique animation I first got interested in animating on computer in about 1990, when I got a big-box Amiga2000 computer, which served as an introduction to the possibilities. Those days, my tools of choice were "Imagine" and "Real3D". In the search for speed, I moved to the PC implementation of Real3D, and co-wrote a tutorial with Rob Dollase on character animation in Real3D. The much-delayed implementation of the next version of Real, and continued deficiencies of their character animation tools (in my opinion) forced a move to "Animation Master". I feel a little guilty, as there's actually very little to show despite having been interested in the area for so long. I guess it's been one long learning curve, and I'm about to start my Oscar-winning short any day now! :-)
