Other Committees Spoliation of works of art during the Holocaust and World War II period Progress Report on UK Museums' Provenance Research for the Period 1933-1945 Background In June 1998 the National Museum Directors' Conference (NMDC) established a working group to examine the issues surrounding the spoliation of art during the Holocaust and World War II period and draw up a Statement of Principles and proposed actions for member institutions Purpose of this document This document is intended primarily to assist with the worldwide search for works of art that may have been wrongfully taken during the Holocaust and World War II. The report updates the initial document from the NMDC published in February 2000 (and updated in October 2000, August 2001 and March 2003 ) describing the results of the research being undertaken by the UK's national museums, galleries and libraries. In addition, it now includes provenance research and lists of works of art with uncertain provenance for some leading local authority and university museums and galleries. The majority of these collections are Designated, that is recognised as holding pre-eminent collections. In publishing these reports we aim to advertise as widely as possible the details of specific works of art, the whereabouts and ownership of which cannot with confidence be specified for the years 1933-45. It should be noted that the inclusion of a work in these lists does not in itself indicate any suspicious circumstances, but simply that some provenance information is missing or uncertain. We hope that anyone with relevant information will come forward.
