T H E A R T S See TOPIC OF THE WEEK for some Father's Day activities ANCIENT FAMILIES AIR THEIR FEUDS ON.....JERRY THE SPRINGER GRADES: 6-12 Here's a project we used to wrap up a unit on Greek theater in my Introduction to Drama class. My Introduction to Drama class was fascinated and repelled by the stories of the Greek tragedies we discussed, from the convoluted, multi-generational revenge plot of the Oresteia trilogy to the incestuous tragedy of Oedipus Rex. We mentioned in passing what kind of talk show guests these people would make, and that was the seed of the final project for the unit: writing a skit in which the ancient Greeks appear on a sensationalistic talk show to confront each other. MATERIALS: When we presented the skits, we resorted to bed sheet togas and found props, so materials were minimal. METHOD: Divide groups by interest. I divided them by whether they wanted to work on the story of Oedipus, Antigone, or the House of Atreus. Have each group appoint a scribe, who is in charge of transcribing ideas and presenting final copies of the script for each member of the group.

Storytellers on Tour 1001 Nights Festival A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words A Story Treasure Hunt ... Art History is Filled with Stories Storytellers on Tour Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

Resource Activities Astronomy Sunspots Spotted I n this activity students will study sunspots and their motion. From data gathered, they will determine the significance of the sunspot data. The data will be used to calculate the rotational period of the sun. The students will then draw conclusions as to the sunspot's impact on the world. This activity will also include a historical study of astronomy. Electrostatics A Hair Raising Experience This activity is designed to help students understand the concept of charged particles and neutral materials. Students will work with conductors and insulators to produce, detect, and transfer charges. Electrostatics 2 A Positively NEGATIVE Experience Students will work in cooperative learning groups to discover how Gauss's Law applies to conductors and dielectric materials. Geology Geology 1 Topsy-turvy Maps Students will use the data analyzer and motion detector to collect data and measure distances. The graphing calculator will be used to show the profile of the simulated land features. They will create topographic maps drawn to scale of a given setup and relate the concepts to the creation of historical ocean maps. Geology 2 Dirty Investigation Given a set of minerals found with the skeleton of an ancient traveler, students will identify the minerals, plot their location on a map, and determine the trail the man walked. Finally the students will right a story about the adventures they think the man might have had. Suitable for 4th and 5th grade students.

Lesson Two: Immigration Explorations, Part 1 . Organize students into research groups to visit sites on immigration that were created by other children. These sites will provide models for students to complete their own research. Lesson Three: Internet Research . Using the criteria they developed earlier, students begin to collect and synthesize information on immigration. Students may choose to focus on one nationality or ethnic group in particular. Prior to starting, students and teachers together develop a list of questions that students will use in research. Lesson Four: Creative Writing/Historical Journals . Having finished their primary and secondary research, students write a series of journal entries, from the perspective of an immigrant traveling to the United States via Ellis Island.
