Kindergarten Educational Philosophy
The kindergarten teachers believe in developing the potential of the whole person, intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually. The teachers endeavor to strengthen listening skills, stimulate imagination and creative powers, foster independent thought, and instill a true love of learning. It is the goal of the teachers to challenge and meet the needs of the individual child, while maintaining a happy environment in which to learn. Language Arts
The kindergarten language arts program is built around the Beginning to Read, Write and Listen series. It is an excellent introduction to reading and writing. The series consists of letter-books for each letter, and within the books each child learns the names of the letters in the alphabet, how to write them, and what sound each one represents. They learn how to blend the letter sounds to form words, as well as how to read simple stories. Each new skill builds on skills that have already been learned. The letters are taught according to their formation, rather than alphabetically. For example, the first letters introduced are based on the circle (i.e."c","o"). Learning to appreciate literature is also an important part of Kindergarten. The children listen to numerous stories, poems and songs as a part of the reading program. Supplementary literature including Big Books, library and classroom books, tape stories, poetry, and fables are also an important component in the kindergarten classroom.

Let's see what we can do for your staff! It has been my experience my entire teaching career whether I was teaching Kindergarten or secondary, that the arts were a powerful force in connecting with students and connecting content across the curriculum. It enriches all subject areas and gives students a point of reference for new learning. So it is with great reverence and much passion that I offer this week's issue on arts resources. This is an update of the October 9, 1998 arts edition of the newsletter. I also want to take this moment to salute Drew Model Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia who is working to integrate the Arts across the curriculum for its students. I have been working with the Drew staff for a year and a half now and I truly admire them for the strides they are making. To Drew, and to all schools who infuse the arts into their curriculum, my hat's off to you this issue! Special thanks to Jerry Blumengarten (heading to Maryland for the holidays), Ron Lambert (of the Sargent Park School in Winnipeg, Manitoba

What Is the Right Age to Start Kindergarten?
How old is old enough for kindergarten in 1997? Who decides the answer for kids today? Last year, a kindergarten-teacher friend and I were talking about the opening days of school. She was excited, and exhausted, and very eager to meet the challenges of the new school year when she said of her new class of kindergartners, "I forget how young they are in September." That got me thinking... Parents all over the country have been wiping their brows and many have been thinking, "Is Sara really old enough for kindergarten? Should I have sent her to kindergarten this year? Maybe I should have waited until next year." It might surprise those parents that kindergarten teachers and school administrators are thinking, "Is Ted really old enough for kindergarten? Should he be in kindergarten this year? Maybe this child should have waited another year."

ATTACHMENT III Request for Information from Kindergarten Teachers of Texas
December 3, 1999 Configuration of Kindergarten Instructional Materials Single Subject Adoption Should the board adopt social studies as a separate subject as they did mathematics in 1998 and language arts-reading in 1999? If yes, please explain your position a. It would depend on how companies incorporate literature in the units and how they would coordinate with the separate mathematics/reading-language arts adoptions. b. You cannot teach four and five year olds in isolation. Instruction needs to be integrated in order to be meaningful to them. c. Many prefer an integrated program. If no, please explain your position. a. Research indicates that young children learn best when they are able to make connections in their learning. By providing separate adoptions for each subject area, the result will be a fragmented curriculum across the state that fails to optimize opportunities to help young learners build bridges that facilitate the learning process. This summer kindergarten teachers across the state attended the kindergarten Texas Reading Academies where they were able to develop an integrated thematic unit that provided for learning centers that focused on developing the TEKS in a meaningful and concrete manner, where students could be actively engaged and where they were surrounded with an opportunity to learn via different learning modalities. When subject areas are adopted independently of each other, this will not happen.

EMAIL this page to a friend Foreword by Don Holdaway When originally published in 1991, Joyful Learning was the first book to demonstrate how to link student-centered theory and practice in the preschool and kindergarten classroom. Since then, it has become a veritable bible for early childhood educators. Now, veteran author Bobbi Fisher revisits her landmark text, adding a detailed index and new routines, activities, and strategies for promoting natural learning. The book's original sixteen chapters offer clear and incisive discussions of theory plus practical advice on shared reading, math manipulatives, assessment, parent communication, and more. Three brand-new chapters explore important themes such as classroom procedures, establishing a full-day kindergarten program, and models for social studies and science inquiries. The treatment of language arts is extensive, with new ideas on phonics, ways to support readers and writers during choice time, the use of literature, book selection, guided reading, and assessment of letter and sound knowledge. Readers will particularly appreciate the updated bibliographies (covering both children's trade books and professional resources) and the updated and expanded appendixes (in which teachers share activities and strategies that have been successful for them in classrooms around the country).
