MATH MODELS FOR UNDERSTANDING
According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards-based curriculum and instruction demand an emphasis on conceptual understandings, multiple representations and connections, mathematical modeling, and mathematical problem solving.
Use of manipulatives to model mathematical concepts and procedures provides the learnersboth students and teacherswith an opportunity for an experience which is visual, spatial, tactile, and kinesthetic.
Through demonstration teaching and workshops with teachers:
1) I show classroom management strategies for the introduction of math manipulatives for every concept and skill encountered in the K - 10 math curriculum.
2) I lead a progression of activities that teach learners how to perform operations with the manipulatives, that prepare learners to verbalize the procedures they are doing with the manipulatives, and that show learners how to write the standard symbolic notations to represent the math concepts and skills being modeled.
3) I demonstrate how to wean the students away from use of the manipulatives once a strong link has been established between the concrete materials and the abstract notations.

THE GINGERBREAD MAN
The Gingerbread Man Theme
The classic story of the Gingerbread Man can serve as a child-centered theme to build a total curriculum around. Appropriate any time of the year, use these activities to teach, practice and apply concepts in language arts through reading, writing, phonics, and children's literature. This is a collection of activities shared by teachers with teachers. Some are original and many have been passed down from teacher to teacher. I thank teachers everywhere for sharing and am happy to be able to pass the ideas on to you for use in your classroom. I know these ideas will inspire additional games and activities as you use them. Many of the activities are designed in a game format, played either by partners or in small groups. Others are designed to be used in a whole class arrangement while some are for independent practice. Many of the activities are also appropriate for homework to give the students additional review of basic skills. This unit is filled with Blackline Masters to make it easy for you to use these activities tomorrow and then again and again year after year. It is recommended that you duplicate many of the games on heavy duty card stock, and laminate for repeated use. Addresses and phone numbers for additional resources pertaining to the Gingerbread Man theme and a bibliography are included.

VARIOUS ART ACTIVITIES
Look below for an assortment of art activities that can be used anytime of the year.
Look for art ideas!!!
Window Painting: On the next rainy day, have your students paint the window using fingerpaint or tempera paint. Have them paint a sun, rainbow, and handprint butterflies. This will brighten up the room on a dreary day!
Thanks to Deborah Wade
Powdered Tempera on Glue: Children squeeze glue onto heavy paper, making a design. Then sprinkle powdered tempera on top and let dry. Shake off loose tempera when dry.
Styrofoam Tray Printmaking: Styrofoam tray
Tempera paint
Speedball ink,or if printing on fabric, ink that will set and be colorfast
Rollers
Paper or fabric
pen or pencil The idea is for students to create a design on the tray with pen or pencil by indenting somewhat into the tray. Letters will print reversed so if you/they want letters they need to be drawn in backwards. After the design is complete, students evenly roll ink onto the tray. Then place a piece of paper on the ink, use a rolling pin to help transfer the design onto the paper or fabric. Carefully, evenly lift paper and you have a print! Repeat with other colors or using different kinds of papers. If using fabric, let dry and sew together as a quilt! Thanks to Kimberly Shields-Tapper Glue Drop: Mix glue with tempera paint or food coloring. Drip on waxed paper with tongue depressors. Let dry; then peel glue drops off of waxed paper. Glue drops on paper and color and paint around them.

Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.
Education A bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education required for these occupations. However, many also require graduate school. For example, they may require a master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree). Training Employees may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.
