Summer of Fire
June 6, 2003
Web posted at: 6:12 AM EDT (1012 GMT) Suggested Activities 1. Scientists say that forest fires do have a purpose in nature, yet human intervention over the past 200 years has altered the effects of forest/wildland fires. Refer student groups to the Web sites provided and other resources to learn about how fires function in the ecosystem. Have groups create posters depicting the life cycle of a forest fire. Posters should reveal how forest fires might function in an ecosystem without human interference and show how human actions can affect the system. After groups present their posters to the class, ask: What are the advantages and disadvantages of forest fires? Should forest fires be allowed to burn unrestrained? Why or why not? What benefits do we gain by preventing wildfires? How can we reduce the negative effects caused by our efforts to prevent forest fires? 2. In recent decades, scientists have begun to assess the impact of human actions on the environment. One of the areas that has been most studied is global warming. In 2002, scientists determined that forest fires burning in Indonesia greatly increased the Earth's greenhouse emissions for that year. Challenge your students to learn more about the research surrounding global warming and the effects of human activities on increasing greenhouse gasses. Have students work in groups to collect information and report their findings. Ask: What effect can forest fires have on global warming? What can you do personally to reduce greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere?

Welcome to Teachit's library of free English teaching resources Come and join us. You know you want to :-)
Whenever we ask you for feedback about Teachit the same words come up again and again:  practical, useful, accessible, relevant, organised, comprehensive, up to date, supportive.  I’m really proud that we’ve been living up to this list and saving you time for all the other important things in life.  Whether you’re into wasp tickling, salt stacking, dust bunny sculpting (all genuine - they’re on Google!) or just want a bit of time for you we hope we can help. But no matter how many resources on offer we all know that it can be nigh on impossible to find the perfect worksheet for a particular class / teacher / objective / context.  It doesn’t take a genius to realise that the task that works perfectly for, let’s say, 10A first thing on Monday may not go down so well with 11D last lesson on Friday, particularly if you’ve tried to join the normal people on Thursday and go out – on a school night!  And, for many of us, creating or adapting the materials is a vital part of the planning process; as anyone who has attempted to teach a cover lesson using someone else’s resource can testify, these things can, and should, be personal.  Join Teachit.plus as an individual online now

  • Ellis Island
In this unit, students will visit Ellis Island sites to learn about the patterns and history of immigration in this country. These explorations will serve as a personal link for students to the historical importance of immigration in United States history.
  • Lesson One: Introduction to Immigration . Read and discuss selected resources about children and immigration. Children develop an understanding of the concept of immigration and reasons why people immigrate.
  • Lesson Two: Immigration Explorations, Part 1 . Organize students into research groups to visit sites on immigration that were created by other children. These sites will provide models for students to complete their own research.
  • Lesson Three: Internet Research . Using the criteria they developed earlier, students begin to collect and synthesize information on immigration. Students may choose to focus on one nationality or ethnic group in particular. Prior to starting, students and teachers together develop a list of questions that students will use in research.
  • Lesson Four: Creative Writing/Historical Journals . Having finished their primary and secondary research, students write a series of journal entries, from the perspective of an immigrant traveling to the United States via Ellis Island.

Art History is Filled with Stories
    Storytellers on Tour
Have students practice retelling folktales in their classroom. When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival
This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words
A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.

    RESEARCH ETHICS
Frank C. Jahn and Carol L. Mitch
    1992 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute
    Rationale:
We hope to teach science as a process; to accomplish this we use experimental labs and independent research projects. When we discuss science as a process, we usually present an idealized view which holds that honesty is a necessary basis for scientific endeavor. Recently, the media have reported misconduct and fraud by scientists. A possible consequence is the inference by students that cheating is common among scientists and that there is little connection between what is taught in the classroom and what happens in the "real world." By extension, the body of knowledge developed by honest scientists is also suspect. By evaluating historical instances of misconduct and exploring the ethics involved in honest data analysis, it is hoped that students will begin to understand the consequences of scientific misconduct and the importance of self-regulation within the scientific community.

April Fool's Day Unit by Megan Crandall
Grade Level 3-4 Background Information The origin of April Fools' Day is not known exactly. There have been many guesses and explanations for its origin. Some believe the celebration of April Fool's Day began many years ago in France. People believe that this day perhaps relates back to an ancient New Year's festival held on the vernal Equinox, March 21. This was the beginning of the new year according to the pre-Gregorian calendar. In France when the implementation of the Gregorian calendar was changed, by Charles IX in 1564, the beginning of the new year was changed and celebrated on January first, those people who still celebrated the day on the first of April were know as April Fools'. Prior to the change of the date it was customary to give gifts on the first day of the year therefore when the date was changed people began sending mock gifts to other people on April first making them April fools. In France a person who resisted in changing the date of the new year was victimized by pranksters who played practical jokes on him, this person became to be
