Art Deco in Architecture
Introductory Essay
by Heidi Dressler
Art Deco , like any other architectural style name, has a range of definitions. Some people would call 1950s streamlines an Art Deco characteristic, while others restrict the style strictly to its 1920s and ‘30s urban incarnations. Always, it is a style that marks the bold transition to modernism in America. No more hand-crafted, earthy details; Art Deco is all about machines, mass-production, metal and concrete . The earliest forms of Art Deco do exhibit a slight reminder of the previous Art Nouveau movement’s graceful nature motifs, while in later years geometry and mass take over to create what is sometimes referred to as Art Moderne or Streamline. Throughout Kalamazoo County, there are several examples of Art Deco architecture, from the early, elaborate skyscraper shape of the American National Bank to the boxlike, brick and concrete pump stations scattered about. All of the examples, with the exception of a few pump stations, a garage and two unique homes, are located in the heart of the city or along much-traveled commercial or manufacturing strips. American Art Deco has typically been a commercial-use form of architecture, because of its association with the change to urban life and the industrialism of the surrounding decades.

Home Neo-Classical Modernism Revolutionary ... Restoration H AVANA A RCHITECTURE .COM A rt N ouveau, A rt D E clectic At the turn of the 20th Century along with Buenos Aires, Havana was the grandest and most important Latin American City. This boom period known as vacas gordas (fat cows) demonstrates huge examples of buildings from the international influences of art nouveau, art deco and eclectic. Its suburbs developed to what we see today as Miramar, Marianao, Cubanacan and Playa. The lush and wealthy Miramar was set out on the American street grid pattern and became a home to diplomats and foreigners. The railway terminal (1912) and the Universidad de la Habana , (1906 -1940) and the Capitolio (1926 - 1929) are a good example of the eclectic style. The Capitolo is an exact replica to half its size of the Capitol building in Washington DC. The dome was at 62 meters the highest point in the city and an example of the influence and wealth deriving from the USA at the time. The Lopez Serrano building (1932) by Ricardo Mira was the first tall building in Cuba and inspired by the Rocafeller Centre in New York. Its design influence can be seen in many buildings in Miami and LA. The Edificio Bacardi (1930) is one of Havana's grandest buildings and it's best example of Art Deco.

    PLATINUM AND SILVER
In the 18th and 19th century silver settings were considered better than gold, to enhance the brilliance of diamonds.
Settings were much heavier with a tendency to enclose the sides and underneath the stone. Early silver was imported from Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, and Peru
. Open back settings were introduced in 1800 with a simple ring of silver set around the girdle of the stone
In1860 in West Nevada USA ,the Comstock lode of silver was discovered ,leading to a dramatic increase of silver jewellery production
A lot of this was mass produced and so much more affordable
Silver filigree is the use of silver wire
It is difficult to put a date on filigree pieces as it is a technique used in Europe for centuries Platinum became fashionable in the 1920s and 30s, although it had been discovered much earlier by Spanish settlers in South America, they called it Plata which is their word for silver

    108. DECOR ART
And it wasn’t just the arts. on Egyptian artifacts, a natural extension of art nouveau and a likely to call just about anything remotely similar, art deco.
    http://www.art-deco.com/general.html
The Art Deco Story The Art Deco period began around 1900 and ended around 1930. If, in fact, it ever did have an ending. At least, however, this is the period during which the greatest volume of work was produced. And it wasn’t just the Arts. The style and design aspects with all it’s geometric forms permeated almost every facet of life. Including, architecture, clothing, industry, jewelry, home furnishings, appliances, interior design and you name it, just about anything you can think of. What finally killed the movement? Well, we like the concept of martyrdom, an untimely death due to the financial crash of 1929, plus a worldwide depression, then the second World War interrupted any recovery and destroyed tons of the stuff and, finally the pre-occupation with post war reconstruction left little time for non-essential items. We here will be concerning ourselves with the decorative accessory aspects of it, only. And really, we will only be scratching at the surface of a very large body of work. The current day revival of Art Deco is, of course, a transitional event. That is, it comes and goes in degrees of popularity but always comes back and never really goes away. It has a permanent niche in our society, probably due to it’s uniqueness, it’s high style and diversity of geometric design. What is it anyway? Well, let’s say that it is connected to things of the past including things done by the ancient Greeks, copies with a twist of Middle Eastern subjects, variations on Egyptian artifacts, a natural extension of Art Nouveau and a whole variety of other influences not so directly related. In addition, today people are likely to call just about anything remotely similar, Art Deco. For example, things “Moderne”, things of “Realism”, “Cubism”, things “Art Nouveau” and even things contemporary. Actually these other movements either preceded, ran parallel to or immediately followed the Art Deco period. With time, the separations between the various elements tend to blur and even blend.
