Art Nouveau Josef Hoffmann: fruit basket Charles Rennie Mackintosh: smoker's cabinet Art Nouveau, the fin-de-siècle style that preceded Art Deco, fell out of fashion in the years before the First World War. In the increasingly conservative political climate, critics saw it as 'decadent' and over-elaborate. It failed to meet the demand for a modern national style. In France, veterans of Art Nouveau like Maurice Dufrène and Paul Follot recognized the need to modernize tradition and adapt their designs to machine production. In Austria, the designers of the Wiener Werkstätte retained their handcraft practices. However, they gradually abandoned the taut geometry of the turn-of-the century Secession style for a greater decorative freedom based on national sources. Elements of Art Nouveau's visual language were adapted in the stylized naturalistic decoration characteristic of the Atelier Martine. The more linear, geometric variant of Art Nouveau, exemplified by the work of Josef Hoffmann and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, directly fed Art Deco designers' search for 'modern' forms and decorative motifs. art nouveau The Art Nouveau style appeared in the early 1880s and was gone by the eve of the First World War. For a brief, brilliant moment, Art Nouveau was a shimmering presence in urban centres throughout Europe and North America. It was the style of the ageseen on public buildings and advertisements, inside private homes and outside street cafésadorning the life of the city. Art Nouveau was a response to the radical changes caused by the rapid urban growth and technological advances that followed the Industrial Revolution. This timeline establishes a counterpoint between major moments in the development of Art Nouveau and world events to provide a context for understanding the style's many and varied influences. Art nouveau embraced all forms of art and design: architecture, furniture, glassware, graphic design, jewellery, painting, pottery, metalwork, and textiles. This was a sharp contrast to the traditional separation of art into the distinct categories of fine art (painting and sculpture) and applied arts (ceramics, furniture, and other practical objects).

Louise Luther
, a consultant and appraiser with Skinner, Boston, is reluctant to define Art Deco briefly. "If you asked 70 people what Art Deco was, you would probably get 70 different answers," Louise explains. "And that would hold true, even if you asked just experts." She adds that these contradictory definitions are exacerbated by inaccurate ones. For example, scores of books repeat the same story about Art Deco's origin. They declare the movement was born in 1925, the year of the Paris Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts (hence the shortened phrase, "Art Deco"). But Louise points out the flaw in that designation. "If that was the beginning of Art Deco, they wouldn't have had anything to show," quips Louise, stating that the movement had been evolving for a decade or two prior to the exhibition. With caveats such as these, Louise finally does struggle for a definition, comparing Art Deco, which had its heyday between the two World Wars, to the other "Art" style that is often confused with it. "If Art Nouveau was curves," Louise says. "Then Art Deco was angles."

76. Antiques Roadshow/Antique Speak: Art Nouveau
more than one of these decorative arts, but the art nouveau quickly gave way to the style that many visit the Lillian Nassau gallery confuse it with art deco.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow/speak/nouveau.html
Flamboyant, erotic and organic. These are the three words that ANTIQUES ROADSHOW appraiser Arlie Sulka uses to describe the artistic movement known as Art Nouveau, the style that flourished in the decorative arts in both Europe and America at the turn of the 20th century. "It's a very exuberant style," says Arlie, who works at Lillian Nassau Limited, a New York gallery that has been at the center of the Art Nouveau revival over the last half century. "It's based on nature, which makes it come alive. It gives it a sense of movement." The Art Nouveau artists found a freeing vocabulary in natural forms. The movement's signature motif was the S-curve, which might be found in a flower's stem on a brooch or the trail of smoke from a cigarette depicted in a theater poster. These supple and sinuous curves found their way into the designs of table lamps, ceramics, art glass, posters, furniture and jewelry. Not only did many Art Nouveau artists dabble in more than one of these decorative arts, but the style also inspired many collaborations, such as a Tiffany window designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Unlike the Victorians before them, Art Nouveau artists were not shy about the naked body, and the aesthetic is often described as a feminine one. Naked or scantily clothed women, often portrayed as nymphs or mermaids, populated Art Nouveau posters and paintings. Artists often placed these imaginary women in fantastic settings, gave them ethereal or erotic poses, and dressed them exotically. The posters of Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, who worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, provide good examples of these types of female forms.
