Individual Preparedness and Response
How to survive a WMD attack In the worst-worst case scenario that you experience a nuke explosion, dirty bomb, toxic chem attack or biological disaster, what should YOU do? The first ten minutes are crucial. Don't "ask your local officials" as much advice to date has suggested. Do read this short booklet prepared by RAND, and prepare. You can print it out from the free PDF file (including handy 3-fold card reminder version), or if you need to distribute many copies to employees, neighbors, etc., you can order printed copies for $15 a piece. I highly recommend reading the full version first (also available as a series of PDFs and/or a longer book) which gives the logic behind their suggestions and scenarios. This is the best practical advice I've yet seen for personally dealing with the consequences of an actual weapon of mass destruction in your neighborhood. KK Excerpt: There is no need to determine the location of the source or direction or speed of the chemical cloud. Technical evaluations indicate that such basic sheltering can reduce chemical exposure by 75 percent or more compared to the exposure outside the shelter. These results are consistent with the outcomes of the aerosolized sarin attack by the Aum Shinrikyo group in a residential area in Matsumoto, Japan, in June 1994. In that incident, all seven people who died had their windows open. All of those individuals who had closed their windows-including many people closer to the source, those in units adjacent to buildings in which fatalities occurred, and those on the lower floors of these buildings-survived the attack (Yanagisawa, 1995).

Libraries and Archives in Cuba
In June, 2001 the Working Group on Cuba will hold a workshop with leading Cuban, US and international librarians and archivists to consider future priorities for preservation and access in the libraries and archives of Cuban scholarly and cultural institutions. The meeting will be held in Havana, and will address various items of concern, including the digitization of records and the construction and maintenance of OPACs in both libraries and archives. Discussion will also address microfilming and digitization of books, serials and manuscripts; training of personnel; and the equipment and physical plant improvements necessary to achieve the goals of world-class access and preservation. Roughly fifteen Cuban and ten North American leading authorities will meet to share their various perspectives on distinct aspects of library and archive modernization. Following the workshop, select participants will draft a report outlining suggested priorities for future investment in the institutions. Funds for this effort are provided by the Ford Foundation.
Workshops on International Cooperation
In June of 1999 the ACLS/SSRC Working Group on Cuba began the first of a two- year series of five workshops in Cuba on International Cooperation. Over the past 2 years, some 60 Cuban researchers have attended sessions held by experts from Europe, North and Latin America. The workshops are designed to better inform the Cuban academic community about the mechanisms by which international agencies identify priorities, solicit proposals or evaluate projects for support. The initiative constitutes a response to perceived needs of Cuban researchers who have limited experience working with international funding institutions that typically provide support on a project-specific basis. The workshops seek not only to educate the community, but also to guide participants through the proposal-drafting process. The final workshop in the series will be held in the fall of 2000.

NEXUS ARCHITECTURE
which is so unconditionally reserved to the city
What followed was an on-going dialogue in which the symbolic nature of Lucy's Nexus Architecture became the key to understanding the power of COLLECTIVITY as VISIBILITY.
Conceived as a process that forges the possibility of collective action and collaboration into a combined force, the various emanations of Orta's Nexus Architecture/Collective Wear lead inwards towards a renewed level of social activism. As a series of interdependent sculptures, they manifest themselves as the result of a personal decision of the artist to re-enter a community structure as an act of liberty, which investigates the power of solidarity, through the symbolism of linkage. Whether within the confines of the Cartier Foundation in Paris, France, or through the bringing together of members drawn from the Usindiso Women's Shelter at the Johannesburg Biennale last year or disenfranchised individuals drawn from the homeless population on the streets of our cities, Orta's Body Sculptures take on a social pertinence far beyond the parameters of a casual performance.

  • Prometheus 1 By Carlos Parada, Author of Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology) Some say these tales are the result of imagination and that the truth is that Prometheus 1 did not steal the fire from the gods, but that he was the discoverer of the procedure from which fire may be kindled.
  • Prometheus 2 is the name of a Boeotian to whom Demeter entrusted something. What was entrusted is a sacrilege to put into writing. Prometheus 2 had a son Aetnaeus.
