Norton: Missouri’s State Grape Harbors Juicy Little Secrets The Fair's Fare Birth of a Microbrew Eat For Luck ... More The Science and Art of Healthy Food by Nicole Plegge, Illustrations by Pat Brangle E-mail This To A Friend! When Mildred Mattfeldt-Beman, chairman of the department of nutrition and dietetics at St. Louis University, was asked to help a local hotel restaurant improve the health of its recipes, the hotel's chef just about flipped out. “He thought we were ruining his recipes, nothing was going to taste good, we were going to lose all of the clientele,” Mattfeldt-Beman recalled. The perception was that as dietitians, they knew nothing about good cooking, she said. In reality, though, they had “considerable training in cooking and food science as well as food service management.”
This is when one of the nation’s first undergraduate programs combining the scientific principles of dietetics with the artistic flair of culinary skills started to take shape: The SLU staff was determined to teach students and the community that healthy cooking doesn’t mean bland, boring food.
The Brains Behind the Culinary Program
Mattfeldt-Beman loves to talk about food. Her eyes light up, her hands become expressive, and she speaks dramatically about recipes and gardening. Her excitement quickly draws in the listener: You want to hear more about the difference in the tastes of yellow and red tomatoes and how herbs can bring a new level of taste to a dish.

How does Boston Art Tours serve you "Cultural Fun with Style"? Director Marina Veronica - an exuberant advocate of the visual arts - makes sure of it. Before starting Boston Art Tours, Ms. Veronica - an art historian (Boston University; The School of the Art Institute of Chicago) worked in the arts and education in Boston, New York City, Amsterdam, Chicago and San Francisco.
Ms. Veronica began working in the art business in the mid eighties (Thomas Segal Gallery; The Institute of Contemporary Art) while studying at Boston University. After graduation, she moved to New York City to work for Tony Shafrazi Gallery. She went on to create Marina Veronica Contemporary Fine Art - focusing on Latin American artists - and in 1988, moved to Amsterdam - where she started The Amsterdam Gallery Guide - a multi-lingual art tour business servicing traveling collectors, corporate groups, and clients of KLM Airlines. While in Holland, she also co-directed Galerie The Living Room - organizing exhibitions and representing Dutch artists on international art fairs in other European countries.
In the nineties, Ms. Veronica taught art history at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The Academy of Art College in San Francisco and began working with elementary age children - designing an art appreciation program for Spanish bilingual students. Her experience inspired her to create Culture for Children in San Francisco. In 1999, she moved the business to Boston - where she continued to teach art appreciation to children (ages 4 - 16). In April 2003, after discovering the need for an art tour service in Boston for both adults and children, Ms. Veronica created Boston Art Tours.

The Art of Teaching Art to Children : In School and at Home > Customer Review #1: This Book Offers the Resource of Experience

This book stands out as a resource for art teachers because it is more than just ideas and directions for projects and crafts. The author shares her experiences and lessons-learned from 25 years of teaching art. As a newly hired art teacher for a private school, charged with creating my own curriculum, this book has become my jewel.
I already have a fair amount of experience with art and with some teaching, but this book is really good for grounding it makes art and art lessons relevant, age-appropriate, logical, and positive. You get the sense that real learning and creativity happen in her classroom, rather than the chaotic, messy, nagging, direction-oriented approach that many of us envision in home or school art classes.

Discovering Great Artists: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters (Bright Ideas for Learning) > Customer Review #1: Wonderful and diverse

This is a wonderful book for ways to spark an interest in both art as an activity and art history. I work with kids from ages 2 - 13 and this book has ideas that will work for most of that range. A variety of materials are suggested and the historical information helps bring perspective to the artists work, even for young minds. I highly recommend this for the home or school. I even bought one for my daughters middle school art teacher for use at the school.

K-2 Create Your Own Workshop Program Introduction and Background ARTS San Antonio is proud to present the 2003-2004 ArtsTeach catalog, a collaboration between schools, corporate interest and the community. Since it's inception, ArtsTeach has been bringing all forms of the arts to elementary schools across San Antonio. We intend to continue our commitment to better education through the arts by seeing that the ArtsTeach program reaches more children in San Antonio and the surrounding area each year. Through the ArtsTeach program, ARTS San Antonio intends to continue building partnerships and developing the ever increasing knowledge that "the arts are basic to education". When you receive your ArtsTeach Catalog, or you look at the ArtsTeach Web page, take time to look it over and get familiar with it because, even though it looks the same as last year, the contents have had some changes. We have added exciting new workshops, to our Artist Roster. We are thrilled and excited to have all of them be a part of our program. We know that our artists are among the very best in San Antonio and some of them have been favorites of yours for a long time. It is our hope that ArtsTeach will remain a very vibrant, positive and memorable part of your student's curriculum.

Creative and Performing Arts There are, at last count, just over a zillion people who want to be an artist of some sort, an actress, a painter, a jazz musician. The desire to express oneself is one of the more universal of human traits. The knowledge and discipline needed to express oneself in any meaningful way is not so common. To achieve that you have to take your unique self and learn a craft, a tradition, and a way of being that's where we come in. We offer degrees (more about those later), that's a short-hand way of letting a very busy and crowded world know that you've done your apprenticeship, that you have a certain amount of talent, knowledge, discipline, and that you're worth a look. We offer a environment, a major university, and big city exposure to the arts. We even introduce students to the arts in Pittsburgh through our Pitt ARTS Program a University-funded program that provides transportation and a sponsor to cultural events and sometimes the opportunity to meet personally with artists and performers. That's no small thing. Art museums, large and small, galleries and the excitement of opening nights; theaters, traditional and experimental, professional and amateur; chamber music, jazz bars, recitals, and festivals. We offer an opportunity to meet established artists and to learn from them and also to meet fellow apprentices and to change and be changed.

  • Joy of Cooking" Irma Rombauer might have been a terrible cook, but her elegant instruction manual belongs in every kitchen. By Douglas Wolk There are better cookbooks than "Joy of Cooking" lots of them. There are cookbooks with greater depth, cookbooks that will teach you more about technique, cookbooks that produce more splendid-looking and -tasting results. But if you're cooking waffles for breakfast, or if you have a bundle of yard-long beans and want to know what to do with them, or if you don't happen to know offhand how to make gefilte fish or gingerbread or hash browns, it is the standard reference manual, the first place you look. Its breadth and pleasantness are unsurpassed. There is no better first cookbook, and it's a trusted companion even for amateur chefs who've been cooking for decades. In part, that's because it was written by one of their number. Irma Rombauer, who wrote the first edition back in 1931, was legendarily both an amateur cook and an amateur writer enthusiastic about both, not especially credentialed at either. Her family was mystified when she announced her plan to be a cookbook author: "Irma's a
